How do you find the value? Is there a default value (e.g., the targeting range of a ship)? The info page for them does not show how far one can command when they are released into space.

The only way I know how (not saying there aren't easier ways) is to get right at the limit of your ships targeting range from a rat and deploy your drones and set them to engage the rat. You'll get a message indicating that you can't control your drones beyond X km.

I've never understood what the base range is but if you warp at distance to a belt and send your drones after a target 60km away (or further) you'll get a message telling you that you can't do that as the target is more than 'X' km away. 'X' is your range. I've never been bothered enough to work it out but it should be simple enough if you work out the extra range you have due to skills. Let me know if you find out soon.

It's something like 20km + (5km x scout drone operation level) + (3km x Electronic Warfare Drone Interfacing level)

Drones: 20km from the get go Scout Drone Operation: 5km per level
at drones 1, scout drone op 5, you get 45km
Next comes the E-WAR drone skill: 3km per level
at drones 1, scout drone op 5, E-WAR drone 5, you get 60km
Followed by the Drone Link Augmentor module: 20km more range per each module.
so, you get 60km drone range with maxed skills and with a DLA you can get 20km(x) where 'x' is the number of active DLAs.

Wow, perfect, thanks! It would be nice if there was some official documentation for that (or if there is, easy to find) (:

Also please be aware that drone control range is ONLY the maximun range that you can give a drone an order and its not even your distance from the drone (its your distance from the target).
If however you have poped out your drones and they auto defend you then they have NO control range, if your control range is 40km and something 100km away shoots at you and your drones are in standby (if you ordered them to return and orbit however they are NOT in standby, they will orbit forever unless told to do otherwise. Standby is the default status after being launched or after finishing another command) they will indeed fly 100km and attack the ship all on their own.
This can have benefits in missions when ship are far outside your range.

Base range is 20km. To that add the following:
+5km for every level of scout drone operation (yes it affects all drones, not just scout drones) +3km for every level of electronic warfare drone operation (yes it affects all drones, not just ew ones)
Therefore, assuming you are not in a ship like Ishkur that gets a ship bonus to drone control range, and you arent using any drone link augmentors to increase range, max drone control range for a character with scout drone op and EW drone op to 5 is 60km.
