Hey all. So I'm very new overall to the game, with a few friends convincing me to sign up, so I did. After about 4 days, I've trained up Gallente and Caldari ships and alot of my basic electronics/engineering stuff, along with drones 1-4 and some operational stuff. I keep reading all these sources and seeing these top charts and ranks for ships on different sites, and hardly anything ever lines up with the other, so I thought I would come to the better source.
So my question is, what faction path should I take if i want to fulfill a cruiser or battle cruiser role in pvp. Potentially Battleship later for fleet, but for now small gang. Currently I have a Vexor, fitted with everything I can, which is all Tier 1 stuff, with the exception of damage control and my guns and ammo. Is there any other recommended path or ships that are staple right now? If so, What fittings should i work towards, and if Vexor is the ship for me, then what is an optimal fitting for it? hmmm i think in your position i would cross train amarr and fly all the Armour boats, keep an eye on turret ,missile and drone support skills.
what you fly though should be half what you like and half what your corp doctrine is.

Is there a specific Ship by chance that is strong for my desired role? Also, I'm curious why Amarr? Is there something that the Gallente ships are inferior in? |

Gallente have a lot of French ancestors, so their ships tend to be short ranged and smell of garlic

Staying power and projection would be two things off the top of my head. Amarr boats can field some frankly stupid good buffer tanks and project solid dps out to midrange better than most,
Though both races excell at armour brawling which IMO is the most fun.
As to roles, between the two races ships you would have the best in class for just about everything armour I.e. amarr get the guardian , best fleet logi but you need at least two of them (and I do mean need) but if you also hav gallente cruiser you also get the oniros (I can't spell for ****) which works solo but doesn't scale as well as the guardian , you see what I mean ? You see it a lot between races in eve , it's designed specifically so one race isn't the default best in class for everything , though to be fair all shield ships smell of cowardice and are inferior to glorious armour hulls (imo)

Okay, so let me get this right...I should train in both galliente and amarr, getting each of their faction specific modules or training to compliment eachother? |

Let's go back one step ... what role you are interested in? There are soo many roles in fleets, tackle, scout, prober, DPS, logistic, e-war, dictor, anti-tackle .... in general there are two main "doctrines": shield and armor, with their ship lines. Gallente and Amarr are usually armor doctrine, Caldari and Minmatar are shield focussed (check the slot layout of the ships). Personally I would train for both, to be flexible if the FC calls for either. I started with Gallente+Caldari. Shield ships are better for PvE combat, if you want to do it.
First, know what you want yo do, check the ship tree what ship suits to that, start skilling.
I'm my own NPC alt.

I am going to give you the best advice I have ever been given by one Kimmi Chan (my alter ego). Both Kimmi and I are PvE Enthusiasts but both recognize that this game is PvP everywhere and that has given us both a very powerful tool in our continuing quest for survival.
Paranoia.
So, as a PvP enthusiast, I would encourage you to target those that are not paranoid enough. People who don't tank mining barges and exhumers. Those who rig for expanded cargo instead of hull. You know, morons.
Those of us with a healthy dose of paranoia are waiting for you on the other side of that gate, outside the dock, in that belt. And we are always thinking, "Where the hell am I going to run like a scared little rabbit?" or "Where can I take this fight so I have all the advantage?"
Alas, most are not paranoid enough - they are your targets. |

I am going to echo what others have said above; take a step back, breathe, and tell us what role you are interested in.
And "small gang" is not a role. That is a fleet size/type.
By "role" we mean; - do you want to intercept and pin targets? (tackle role) - do you want to dish out damage at close range? (brawler) - do you want to dish out damage at long range? (sniper) - do you want to dish out damage going really fast? (kiter) - do you want to give remote repairs to allied ships? (Logi (see: "healer")) - do you want to apply Electronic Warfare against hostile ships? (Ewar (see: debuffing targets))
At what level do you want to do the above at? - frigate level? - cruiser level? - battlecruiser/battleship level? - capital level?
Also understand that ships in EVE do not follow a standard "advancement" line the same way character classes do in other games. A Cruiser is not a straight upgrade from a Frigate... which is itself not helpless against a Battleship... unless the latter creates a formation that can only be described as a wrecking ball of doom... which can be wiped out in seconds by 6 superspecialized ships... which can easily be killed by pretty much any other PvP-fit ship in the game.
Really think about what you are doing.

I wanted to try and be a drone boat pretty much filling the role of an armor tank brawler. I'm currently testing around with the vexor, but i'm a bit lost in terms of fittings |

I would like to fulfill the role of an armor tank "brawler" in the cruiser ship level. I'm using a vexor now. But could use help with tactics, and fittings and all that. |

I'm not doing that usually, because I'm an advocate for independence, but in your case I would recommend joining a newbro friendly corp to get advice and help working your way towards your goal.

In a nutshell OP, every ship in EVE has it's own role it excels in.
DON'T cross train in the beginning, you will just be wasting time and SP. Stick with Gallente since you seem to have invested the most SP into it. Look at killboards (Zkillboard) on losses of the ship you're currently flying to get an idea how people fit them. I would suggest starting with T1 frigates because they're cheap to lose and a cheap way to learn game mechanics. Learn how most ships you encounter are fitted and pick fights where you have a chance of winning. For example if you decide to fly an afterburner Incursus, then avoid things like Condors and Slicers. (Use the directional scanner to get an idea of what's in space before you warp to it).
This guy >> LINK << has some pretty good videos for newbros and that video gives you a pretty good overview.
In conclusion, get into cheap frigates, learn the game (mechanics), learn how to fly your ship and pick fights, and don't be afraid to create hilarious loss mails. Best thing would probably be joining an active pvp corp where you can fly in small gangs and learn from your corp mates.
