If someone steals ore from your jetcan or steals loot from your rat kill, how long do they stay flagged for you to shoot at them?

Related to this:
If you warp into a belt (0.5 space) and find 3 yellow wrecks with loot just floating around, but there's nobody around, and the person who owns them isn't in Local chat... would you loot them?
I mean they only had cheap things in them like 1MW AB's... not worth risking a ship over... but if it's going to waste...
Will the 'owner' get notified that someone is taking 'their' stuff? If not, how would they find out? ---------------------------------------- Trainee Combat Pilot and Dronemistress "Say hello to my little friends" ---------------------------------------- |

They will not get notified. You'll show up as agressed (ie. shootable by them) on their overview.

Cheers for that.
I don't mind showing up as shootable in their overview... as long as they're not in the sector!
If they get notified then I'm glad I left well alone. ---------------------------------------- Trainee Combat Pilot and Dronemistress "Say hello to my little friends" ---------------------------------------- |

REMEMBER: you will be flagged for the whole corp of the can/wreck-owner (if it is a player-corp) and as there might be corp-mates around - watch out! _______

Don't forget that if the owner is in a player corp, check if any of his corp mates are in local. Also factor in the time lost waiting for the timer to run out before you can travel safely. Is it worth sitting in a station for 15 minutes to wait for the timer to run out? Generally I wouldn't bother with picking up the cheap stuff, but if he left something good behind then it might be worth while.

Loot...don't pollute!
That said. If the owner is too lazy to pick it up, feel free to have a go at it. The only notification that they will get is if they are in the sector and happen to see you on their overview. There is no evemail or popup window saying that you stole from them. Grab and go and keep Eve a litter free place.

I do this all the time. Sometimes some lazy miner will leave a dozen unlooted wrecks floating around in one belt for quick salvage by me
Here's the criteria I use to judge whether or not to take the chance:
1) Check if the can's owner is still in system. If he is, I almost always leave it alone.
2) Check the can owner's corp. Is it a noob corp? An obvious mining / industrial corp? Safer than looting the cans of 'Pirates R Us'.
3) How about the player? Has he/she been playing for 2 years with a -2 sec rating, or 2 days with a 0.0?
4) How busy is the system you're in? If there's only 1-5 people I'm a lot more confident than if there's 40+, even if most are just traffic passing through.

One question about that: do you lose security status by taking the cans or the shipwreck of others? |

The AB or small Nos may not be worth much, but you have to clear them out before you can salvage the wreck.

I've looted and I've been looted. Honestly, if the person just ask I'll let them take the loot if I'm mining. Or they can just salvage the wreck if they need to. I carry the equipment to handle this myself but I do it mostly to clear up the overview.
But I do check to see if the owners of empty wreck are in the system. if not, then I salvage them some times.

Salvaging an empty wreck is not theft, and you are not flagged for it. You can't use a tractor beam on a wreck that isn't yours, and if the wreck isn't empty, you can't salvage it until it is. Oddly, Concord will put you in your pod if you shoot someone else's wreck.

you could always just ask in local if such and such minded if you cleaned up after them, especially if they're just mining. I've done it before, and they have always been cool.
