I once considered myself an EVE addict.
I was happily playing EnB, when I heard about this new game called EVE, so I signed up for beta. I got into the last phase of beta, and quit EnB right then and there.
I have played a few games other than EVE since May 7th 2003, but not many, and I was the type to buy a new $60 PC game every month b4 EVE came around...
I progressed through EVE like many others, starting off as a carebear who hated the likes of Setec and Space Invaders, became a forum warrior expressing my views and ultimately getting my main account perma-banned from the forums.
I progressed in-game from carebear to a 0.0 alliance player who loves the concept of empire building. I actually love large scale PvP combat these days, but still hate suicide ganking in empire and corp war griefing. So I guess I still have some carebear in me.
I own 4 accounts to this game, and do not believe in macro mining, farming or RMT in any fashion, even though I fell to temptation a couple of times to the GTC for ISK "debacle" Some may say I'm still cheating because I have 4 accounts, I guess I don't see it that way...
I now consider myself a VET without a game... Namely due to lag and bad content implementation.
Many game mechanics still IRK me, but yet I can still play and enjoy EVE doing my own thing. The T2 lottery and invention still boil my blood, but yet I can still play.
I guess there are more things about EVE that I like than dislike. However, one of the things that has become an EVE trademark as of late is the inability of the server to handle the current load, and specifically fleet battles.
Fleet battles are essential to empire building IMO, and the more ships, the better the battle IMO.
Lately, I find myself resenting this game due to lag. I also resent the players who can still play with this lag and enjoy the game. I'm upset that many of the player base seems to "allow" CCP to run dodgy servers and get away with it...
I guess it's hard to log on these days in my 0.0 alliance, and engage in a fleet battle that I know will only make me log off in a rage at how bad the service CCP is providing has been of late. I also do not enjoy their proposed "solution" to this by breaking up fleets into smaller chunks to solve the problem.
I guess I have a few questions for those who still log on and play every day. How do you do it?
How do you let CCP get away with it? And how can you extract entertainment from lagged out battles? When all you have is players petitioning for their stuff back after EVERY f'ing battle?
I don't plan to leave EVE, always said I'd be here until the end, just looking for something to keep me coming back, because as of late, resentment is all I feel when I sit down and see the EVE icon in the quick launch bar...

nicely written
Our corp has finally found its home in an alliance. Despite the normal initial "relationship polishing", the space is really great, and we love the place
That is what eve has done for me lately
on a more perso side, i finally boarded a nighthawk, and i totally love it ------

It's been what nothing else is. War. Unbridled, all out war. In space. With lasers.
No other game provides the ability for an individual to shape the entire face of the gaming world. Not that I take advantage of it, but the opportunity is there if I ever have a sane job with normal hours.

EVE has such potential, but it is left down by server performance and really dodgy mechanics .... POS wars should be replaced with some other mechanic ... _ANYTHING_ would be better than deathstars keeping soverignty (small rich alliance can keep soverignty against much larger poorer alliance - isk is the iwin button)

I have noticed that my old PC doesn't cut it anymore in Revelation (Athlon 2000XP, 1GB RAM, Geforce Ti-4200). Have the feeling that I have more trouble with a 40 player fight now then I had with with 100+ before Kali.
On the other hand the server performance has improved compared to the state before the hardware upgrades. You can still cause insane lag and kill a node, but it takes a lot more players now. For me it changed from mainly server to mainly client performance problems.
Last time I got killed by 30 people my PC just froze. Since I didn't want to log, I asked my corpmates, if I'm still in space or podkilled to station. Some responded teamspeak: 'You are already on station.' and then I relogged. ______________

I meant that more as a personal mental justification, as in how do you cope with it and still find pleasure in EVE.

Among all the questions there is one I want to answer. What have EVE done for you lately. And the answer is easy:
EVE makes me happy.
Always have. Yes there can be lag some times, and im sure it can be frustrating in blob wars, and Jita.. well, I dont go to Jita much so that is not a problem.
In many of the problems we really have ourselves to thank for all the lag. Let me mention a few.
1. Bookmarks. This created lag when thousands upon thousands from thousands of people writing and loading from the servers. Thankfully they where removed. But if left to the players, this would be a increasing problem, due to the increase in player mass.
2. Blob Wars. Players will always gather as many combatants as possible, since the enemy will do so too. And with alliances growing larger and larger, blob war gets more and more common.
3. Jita. Why people wants to stay in Jita is beyond my imagination. Yes, it got a good trade hub. But honestly. I have always found what I wanted OUTSIDE these overcrowded hubs. So I have never had a reason to go there!
4. More...
So, I will ask another question to you all: What have you done to EVE to ensure its playability?? Remember: Dont ask what CCP can do for you, but what you can do for CCP, the players, the game and the holy EVE Spirit!

Playing since april 04 and not bored yet, sure i've had some ups and downs but i'm still having fun.
Esp now i can finally run both my accounts on the same comp without it throwing a fit
What keeps me going? I dunno.. mebbe the social part of it, and i enjoy helping others to get ahead of this game, some of them have even surpassed me but instead of recentment or jealously i feel pride (and a secret hope that if i'm ever in dire need of some help they will remember who got them to where they are now in the first place.) Resized tag... again... hope this pleases the tag ninjas from ccp... again :p

Totally agree... we'll see eachother on the battlefield... the fight in ym-sru made me believe in EVE... its so much fun. Ok there is some lag left and right but even still its fun. Cap ships, sieging, lost in the battle or saved just in time, surprise Doomsday from a titan, long range, short range, probing, camping, large fleet and small fleet battles all in one __________________________________________________ The Syndicate IncÖ Proud Member of The Syndicate Inc Corporation. Given me insights into business and human nature that you cannot get from anywhere else.
Helped me understand markets better, and their relationship to natural resources.
Helped me to understand the value of loyalty and friendship.
Made me a little more cynical and alot more wise.
I honestly think you could prolly learn more about business from 2 years of Eve than 2 years of Business School.
Or better yet, go to Business School and apply your lessons to the Eve economy to see if they work.

Edited by: Andrue on 05/02/2007 15:08:29 Edited by: Andrue on 05/02/2007 15:07:31 Lately? It introduced me to the good people of Star Enterprises. It made me care about looting salvage. It made me aspire to flying something other than an Apoc. - that made me learn about missiles. - that has finally persuaded me to move to l4 missions. It's made me think about exploration. It's made me intrigued about in-game voice comms. It's made me excited about faction based warfare. It's made me damn annoyed at the remains of agent based courier missions..but then again mindlinks make my alt useful in a different way. Its forums continue to amuse me.
I am currently at a high point with my addiction. Probably I'll hit a low in six months because it seems to go in six monthly cycles for me.
But three years on..Eve is what it always was. A hobby and well worth the cost of two accounts. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Most recently EVE was kind enough to allow me to implement my latest wacky idea with losses of under 10M ISK.
It also showed me (once again) that planning ahead and thinking a bit outside the box works, because the game mechanics are designed to enable you to do things, not restrict you. ----------

In general, as indiciated by lots of communication lately, stability, performance, blob warfare, sovereignty and so on are top priority on our list for Revelations 2. The Need for Speed is in all our minds.
Oh, and Invention has been improved through the last 3 patches and will continue to be improved. We're invested in this feature and won't stop till we're happy with it as a real contender in the Tech 2 economy.

Eve has kept me entertained for the last year and a half, and I believe, that it will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
Yes, I hate the lag sometimes, Can-Spam in Ice belts was my last irritation. But Lag catches you almost everywhere.
I think however that its easy to critasize Eve performance and lay blame on CCP; and yes, there is no other to blame in most areas.
However, I am sure that we all know in one way or another CCP hate the lag like the rest of us. And with that they will be doing everything that can to correct it.
I like you like the idea of 100 strong fleets fighting for a good hour or so around a system with no lag, and I am waiting for the day this happens.
We have to remember that CCPs a new company in terms of game development, they don't have the man power that Blizzard has, nor the past experience.
That said, now and then we have to take a step back and remember that they don't want us to loose ships due to lag, and they in one way or another want every one to enjoy Eve in whatever path they choose, but also on top of that they have their own vision of what Eve is to be come, never will all of the eve community agree with that...

What makes me play eve? The sheer possibilities available to the player. No other MMO I have ever heard of lets you make such a large difference to the community.
If you quit playing people will miss you and eve won't be the same ever again. Everyone has a chance to make a difference. ---------------------------

Yeah, it's too bad to see that people start complaining about something new while the overall modus operandi in MMOG's is that stuff suffer from 'summoning sickness'.
Improving what is somewhat flawed in a new concept is what CCP actually does, so I still trust their ability to make things become better again. Feedback from the player base is good, it is what they need, but the negative taste to all of the 'comments' make me sick sometimes.
I still like Eve because of the multiplayer/social aspect of it. I'm having a blast every night in corpchat with people I don't even know!
With my last corp, we have had a real life meeting where corpmembers from all over the world came over to have fun. Fantastic! As lonmg as I can keep doing that, and have fun at it, I'll be playing Eve.
I will take a little lag and some T2-jealousy for granted

Great to hear, but do you really think invention was improved with an un-announced change slashing the BPC runs output by nearly a factor of 10? Or can that be finally confirmed as a bug? Im coming up on 4 years played soon....
Ive had ups and downs, some real fantastic times, and some dreadful events but by there very nature, all memorable.
This is EVE for me.
No other game holds sway like it does, and though I agree there are areas that need improving, like any good group they work hard to get it done, as fast as time, resources and money allows.
My dad, before he died would remind me when things are not going as well as i'd like would say "Like all things Shannon, this too shall pass.."

Lag sucks, no doubt about it. I hate to be the one to identify the elephant in the room but perhaps CCP should consider starting another server. It runs contrary to what they want but I suspect the lag issues will never go away so long as the player base keeps growing. As long as you are able to port your toon over to a new server, where's the harm? Alliances and corps might break apart but others would form to take their place.
