Edited by: Toaster Bagel on 05/02/2007 05:15:24 The biggest thing limiting 1080p caps is HDD speed. This would be what I would consider production quality for my EVE capturing. now that I've hammered out what I feel the best way to process and encode eve captures, I'll finally buckle down and do a real video with actual entertainment value.
As you might notice there are some incongruencies in Windows Media keyframing. H.264 turns out to be almost impractically large however high the quality is. When I do release a video, I of course will release in several formats and resolutions to try to accommodate all user demographics. Hardly anyone has a monitor that can display 1080p. Some have monitors that go far beyond that. However, if any of you are like me, your eve vids end up on your HDTV via one form or another. So going with industry standard 1920x1080/23.98p is what I will go with. That being said you can notice the dropped frame, there are slight irregularities in between the source and the final. I may as well just go with strict 24fps non-drop timecode.
here it is:

toaster,
can you please give all of us jaw-dropped enthusiasts an insight into your capture setup and work-flow? e.g. dedicated capture box? how connected? what hardware? etc? please don't tell me your gaming rig is capable of frapsing at that high res, quality and speed... sometimes less is more...zero

Edited by: Toaster Bagel on 06/02/2007 03:05:20 Sure it is mate, I have a Dell XPS m1710 laptop, it's got a Core2Duo 2Ghz processor(dual core for those playing the home game), 2GB of ram and a 7200rpm SATA HDD. 17" display capable of 1920x1200. I capture, edit and encode all on this machine. I also have an FX60 machine with 4GB of ram and 4 drives in RAID0 can can easily capture 1080/60p, if only I had a monitor that went that resolution. I hope to be able to do that with my laptop soon I just have to get a firewire hard drive for increased speed.
My only limitation is hard drive speed and to some degree capacity, I can probably capture at 30 to 40fps for about 10 to 20 minutes but no more than that.
I capture to raw uncompressed AVI, then import into Adobe Premiere, I edit using MS-MPEG4 v2(irrelevant to output quality.). I encode to Windows Media 9 Advanced Profile with Windows Media 10 audio.
This is a possible thing, here fellas. More ppl will be able to do it soon.

if anyone wants to know 2x Seagate 7200.9s in RAID 0 handles FRAPS capturing @ 1920x1200 (>1080p res) fine. Just dont run eve/windows on the same array and your okay.

ok. here in australia we're 29fps for PAL. i have compromised and have a 1920x1200 panel but play 1680x1050 windowd so i can still manage vent, msn, blah blah. i fraps at 29.9fps no dramas but find myself editing movies at 1280x720 because it gives a great quality result for most of the viewing public for a reasonable file size.
i may toy with going larger and see where it takes me in terms of "usability" of final product sometimes less is more...zero

Just post your HDTACH numbers. My raid 0 gets around 240MB/s burst. Decent for a sata setup. Of course, with raptors...off the charts. Not big enough for my "media" collection though.

My HDTACH for my xps laptop is 115MB/s Burst, 45MB/s sustained. Definitely not bad for a laptop. That spanks a lot of desktops.
