A new peak concurrent user record was set Sunday, Dec 3rd when 32,955 users were logged into EVE Online: Revelations. This would not be that significant if not for the outstanding performancethe Tranquility server demonstrated under this enormous load. According to preliminary log analysis the server cluster was at 47% capacity - A clear indication that the new Revelation expansion along with the accompanying hardware upgrades has brought the cluster to a new level.
Sorry, but is this a joke?? I was in Stain yesterday evening in a gang with 12 people nobody else in system and the lag was like hell
Nobody else with lag ??

We encountered some lag in Everyshore yesterday as well, but it wasn't as bad as before Revelations.

well the server obviously cant handle that many people, but the news story isint going to be "Tranquility fizzles under high capacity, CCP's credibility ruined", so we get the news story you posted.
Maybe in devland everything was running smoothly...

It's pretty laggy at the moment, yes. Even now in the morning I get stuck for 5+ minutes. -----------------------------------------------

CCP said that in theory the server could handle 50k people on at once o.0
me thinks more optimizations be needed.

Before the patch I didn't get the very annoying "You are number 378 in the queue.." message when trying to go through Jita.
That 47% capacity might be a nice figure to put out but it really doesn't mean an awful lot.

The servers certainly can, as long as these people don't run missions, fight, use jump gates, browse the market, look at the galaxy map, ...

Actually, they can handle 50k, as long as the people are distributed in an exact fashion so that they don't max out any nodes

The Cluster was running at 46% however you don't reside on the cluster you reside on the nodes of the cluster which means yes your node may be lagging but that doesn't mean the entire server is :) ---

Yeah, me too. I had a 5 sec lag yesterday and that was it. I do missions in several regions every day back and forth for 12 hours a day some times. On patch day, yes. After patch day, smooth as silk when it comes to lag.
I have a new high-end system and my internet connection is 6.5mbit and good as gold. |

Doesn't stop the news topic from being misleading though does it? While it's nice that TQ is still growing, seeing a news post like that while you're spending most of your time getting stuck in jump queues (or just plain stuck) feels more than a little insulting to say the least.

That news story was a PR disaster, and CCP should learn from it. Please don't make the same mistake again
The lag was awful where we were. They knew this as we had to petition the issue.
Many others had issues with lag and login problems, and also raised some petitions.
Lots of people posted on these forums with these issues.
CCP knew that ppl were upset, and knew that there were issues. Yet they still produce some news story patting themselves on the back. They would have done better by not saying anything at all.
That news story has upset a lot of my corp members, it just did them no favours at all

It's not the lag I have a problem with, I understand that it happens, but when CCP blatently lie about it, that annoys me. But yeah, lag yesterday wasn't too bad, it was sunday when the server dropped 50% of people, been fine since then though. ------

The server was running perfectly. A bug that was causing the nodes to crash and have bad performance however, was causing the nodes to crash. That news statement is 100% correct, the server performances was stellar. ---

QTF!!!!
People need to understand that eve runs on distributed computing, where several server make up 1 or more nodes.
If your in a system whos node is at 99% capacity you will lag, while others else where the nodes may be 15% capacity.
With 32K people online the whole cluster (note I said cluster not server) worked! not everyone had problems only those on maxed out nodes.
Good work CCP!! You deserver it!!
Edit: Get of of main hubs!!! ------

Edited by: GHarris on 05/12/2006 12:15:28 It may be the case that the average CPU usage over the whole cluster is less than 50%, but that has no relevance to many players' experiences. So what if there are dozens of empty systems with near-0% CPU usage? What matters is that there are dozens of systems, some containing many players, some with few, which are experiencing unacceptable lag and CPU usage close to 100%. The press release quoted in the original post is a slap in the face to the players who had a rubbish time on Sunday due to lag.
EDIT: I'd just like to say that I didn't have a big problem with lag on Sunday but I sympathise with those who did. |

what CCP should do is suck it up stop trying to cater to people that have old/obsolete computers, and advertise widely the updated min requirements.
get with the times or play something else, technology is moving ever forward.
Only one instance of lag for me since relelations too

What about the people who are in a system with very few people in it? If they have the misfortune to share a node with, say, Jita then they will suffer a lot of lag. They can't tell which systems their node is being shared between and they can't do anything about it. |

I was in 0,0 and only a few people with me, the lag was like hell and at a gate i had to wait 5-10 minutes to reach the other site... no module activation for a long time and so on!!!
This was 0,0 and there wasn't much people in this systems... and to this points i cannot accept this lag.

The situation being discussed here has little or nothing to do with the speed of the users' PCs. If in one near-empty system you experience good performance and in another you experience very poor performance, the problem is down to the server and not the client (due to the first system being on a less stressed server node than the second).
I think that there is often a lot of confusion in discussions of poor performance in Eve. People playing Eve tend to use the word "lag" as a much broader term than people who play other multiplayer games (in my experience). To me, the word "lag" means poor performance caused by a poor internet connection or an overstressed server. Performance issues resulting from your own PC being too slow are another matter. |
