While it is rather dumb to not update your clone when you know good and well thats how this game works, it doesnt make sense that this is even an issue at all.
Just like learning books are a time sink, clones are an isk sink. Honestly, there is really no point to them. All they do is make you spend money in order to make sure you dont lose a crapload of training after youve been killed, i mean....wtf? How many other mmo's have you risk your long hard career for nothing??.......I mean granted its not that hard to update your clone, and neither is it expensive, its just totally pointless.
There are stations out there where you can pod to and there is no medical station, which is honest bull****. I am not saying its likely for this to happen, but its possible to to undock right at the moment there is a suicide ganker outside station or something. I have no idea whether CCP would reimburse your sp if this happened, but if they didnt thats bull****.
I just dont like clones in general, all it does is make you waste isk, and worry. You could be ****** out of 3 years of hard work because of one small accident where you forgot to update your clone, not to mention the 300 some dollars.

No, if you play EQ for 3 years and you die, do you lose 3 years of work?...didnt think so.....
Edit: I guess i should rephrase that then, since you dont technically in eve either, but there is the "possibility".
That is the part that is retarded to me, the fact that the possibility is even there.

You are aware that you don't lose ALL the SPs?
So if I have 30m SPs, and a clone that holds 25m SPs, and I get podded, I DO NOT lose 5m SPs. It's much less than that, it uses a formula to take SPs away from various high-ranked skills I think.

I like clones. I like the fact that if you find yourself stranded in a non med-bay station without an up to date clone, you have to get out using cunning and guile. I like the fact its an isk sink (its something to keep vets spending, and isk sinks counteract inflation). I like that if you're foolish / unlucky enough to get caught without a clone, you lose SP.
If I didn't like it, I'd consdider WoW or EQ as a viable alternative way to spend my free time.......... -----------------------------------------------

Well, that i did not know......
BUT, how much would you lose if you had a 30k clone, and 30 mil sp??

That is a good question. Again, you will NOT lose 29,970,000 SPs, but I imagine you'd lose more than if you had a 25m Clone.
I'm sure someone will know the formula and how it works.

A clone is probably not that expensive, it's the free POD you wake up in when you "reincarnate" that costs isk. Pods are made mostly of Noxcium.
Call it insurance. When one is cloning, copies aren't always as sharp as originals, and anything you can pay to make up the difference is worth it.

I got podded, without an updated clone too... By FIX, those dirty bastards killed me. I'm just a poor lil' alt! Oh well, my owner says that the people at my next destination are nicer and since I only fly shuttles I don't care either way.
More seriously, sorry to hear that... but you know you should have updated that ****e!

I like the clone system personally, simply because it adds depth. It also really does make things a little more dicey for vets, because no matter what you're flying, if someone nails the pod you're going to be spending up large for a new clone.

I tried it once on the test server. I lost around 60% from the skill i had the most SP in. And it was BS lvl5, so ~1.2 M skillpoints lost without a clone.

I understood it to be 5% of the difference between your skillpoints and your clone's max skill points, taken from your largest skill.
For example, I got podded recently, and for the first time in 3 years, had a clone which did not cover my skillpoints. I lost 14440 points from battleship 5 which took me something like 8 hours to retrain.

LOL! Could you imagine if you lost ALL of your skill points if you died without an updated clone? I guarantee there's be about 10000 pilots that would check their clones 25 times before undocking!

No you can't. You only lose a %ge of the unprotected points. I've had it happen to one of my alts twice (because I have chosen not to waste ISK buying a clone for an Empire carebear alt) and in both cases I only lost about a week's training. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Its been suggested before, and I think it should be implemented. Its easy to forget to update clone if you take part in lots of pvp.

I agree 5 times is kind of careless.
But I do agree there should be a warning message before you undock. Losing a few weeks to a month of training is WAY to harsh without a warning message.
Sometimes you just forget.
