Hi all, 1st time posting, just wanna introduce myself and extend a friendly hello (yes to u pirates also). I've been playing for a lil over 30 days now, have lost many frigates, but gained experience and knowledge in the process.
I'm now flying a Catalyst destroyer, but the powergrid and drone support sucks. I've almost saved enough to buy a Thorax cruiser and just about finished my skill training to fly and equip with medium hybrids.
My question is what would be the best way to equip for fighting anything. My destroyer gives bonus to small hybrids, but I noticed in dogfight with many pirates shooting missles at me that the blasters using frequency charges works best at greater range than hybrids. I equiped my ship with all light beam hybrids I, and came near to destruction many times. So I went back to my original configuration 4 beam lasers, 4 hybrids, and completed mission with no problem.
So to equip my brand new Thorax, I could use some advice so I wont have to learn through experience and loss of my new cruiser.

First off, Gallente ships get bonuses to hybrid turrets, not energy ones (lasers and such). Fit Blasters and Railguns so you get your damage bonuses.
How to fit the Thorax depends heavily on what you're going against, but a good NPC setup uses 250mm rails with a good compliment of drones in your dronebay.
Hybrids and drones, and your thorax will be a beast. :)

No problem.
If you'd like some specifics on setup, feel free to evemail me in-game, I'll give you some info on some of the setups I like to use. There's also the setups thread at the top of the page here, but sometimes it's nice to chat setups with folks. :)
Let me know if you need any help, just drop me a line.

Also notice that you ship looks like a 1balled *****, so don't be upset if they call you ding dong.

Edited by: Flaming sambuka on 21/11/2006 19:46:54 This is what you are looking for:
3x light neutron blasters 2x medium nosferatu
1x mwd 1x web 1x 7.5km scrambler
1x medium armour repairer 1x damage control 1x 800mm plate 2x energized adaptive nano membrane
Replace all for best named you can afford or if you can, tech 2.
Dont forget 5x medium drones, a mix of valkyries and hammerheads does nicely.
Edit: when you have the skills trash this setup and go for an all out gank setup but only when you have a few mill sp in gunnery, also it probably wont but with top skills you could replace the 800mm plate with a 1600mm plate.

People never believe me on this one but in my opinion, light blasters perform muuch better on a thorax than medium blasters, for PvP, anyway.
I like this kind of setup.
5x Light Neutron 2 w/ Void ammo.
1x Medium cap injector w/ cap charge 400s 1x 20km scram 1x 10mn MWD
1x 1600mm rolled tungsten plate 1x medium armor rep 2 1x n-type explosive hardener 1x n-type kinetic hardener 1x damage control
5x explosive light drones 5x EMP light drones
Some people might think "where's the webber?", but with light blasters and drones, you honestly don't need it. You'll need a few base skills to fit this (engineering 5, electronics 5), but once you do, fly this thing like a giant assault frigate. Warp in close, get the point on them, send the drones in, microwarp right up to them and hammer them with the blasters. Nos isn't needed as you've got the cap injector, and with some practice, you can easily learn to time your cap injector to recharge you right after a nos cycle if you get jumped by a nosdomi or something. If you can't fit this, or lack the skills for the T2 (there's about 3-4 weeks training in this setup, but they're all good background skills to have), swap the blasters for T1 Ions or whatever you can fit.
If you ever feel inclined to do a bit of Yarr!-ing or antipirating, this setup is perfect, it can absorb loads of damage; with the 1600mm plate you've got 6k armour or so. You can even tank the sentry guns in 0.4 for a good few minutes.
For ratting or pve in highsec, drop the 1600mm plate, fit 250mm rails and another hardener, maybe swap the injector for a recharger and try a good ol' active tank. The thorax is very versatile for this, but best of all, it's reasonably cheap once you get into the game :).

The Thorax is probably one of the most versatile ships in the game, in my opinion. You can play it from afar or up close, guns or drones, combinations of all. Great fun.
Ever try a Vigilant? :) Some extra slots and a missile rack? Lots of fun. Plus it looks great.

Edited by: Lady Saldana on 21/11/2006 21:39:45 Howdy,
according to ur playtime its about lvl 2 missions primary. ive used a thorax a long time and it is a **** good cruisa. tested alot an always came up with the same standard fitting (for lvl 2 missions):
5x150mm ammo: S Lead charge, S Antimatter
Meds: 1xAB 1xcapacitator recharger 1xwebber
lows: 1x1600mm plates 1xadaptive nano/cap power relay if ur cap runs out while repping and shooting....see urself ( depends on cap skills) 2xactive hardener ( rat specific) 1xmedium armor repairer
5 medium drones
this is covering all kind of range u need and gives a nice punch. ur facing alot frig size stuff and if ur tracking is not well u run into trouble hit those critters. 150ish rails do best against them. sure u loose one cruiser bonus while using small guns, but u will hit them alot more. 250is rails dont track so well...if u wanna use medium guns use a blaster setup and let ur webber slow the rats down. rails > blasters for missions imho, since u dont spend hours chasing npcs to get in range.
thorax is still one of the best cruisers even with the old setup ( small gunz and 1600 plate)....
best regards

If you want to give your destroyer new use try fitting a full rack of railguns. Just vary the size of the railgun and the charges you use so that you can fit a full rack and have them all hit at the same range.
Do this and you will be 1 vollying any frigate you find.
For the thorax it depends on what your fighting, personally i had alot of fun fitting it with 1 multispec ecm and 5 ec-600 drones. That thing was jamming down Battleships MOST of the time, cruisers (not even t2) stood a snowballs chance in hell.
Be warned, the thorax is an extremely SP intensive cruiser. You prety much need +25% pg/cpu from skills and atleast cruiser lvl 4 to even hope to fit this thing properly (cruiser 4 needed to fit the MWD without killing cap).
The Vexor is a bit less skill intensive and outshines the thorax in ever way shape and form untill you have the SP to properly fit and run a thorax. Being 30 days old i would advise against getting a thorax, it will be an expensive learning experience.

Well now Christopher, that was very informative and enlighting. Now I must rethink my plans, and consider the Vexor, seriously. Ill check it out when I get home tonight, but so far I've been training all my skills for the Thorax, I hope I don't have to start a whole nother set of skill training to operate the Vexor efficiently.
