Whats the reason why we can't activate a smart bomb while sitting on a gate? I can target and shoot a gate, but can't activate a smart bomb.

well smartbomb does damage toe verything in range u damage gate concord or sentries open up on u - pretty self explantory

Not really - every other module gives you the choice, and smartbombs come up with a message (which can be disabled) when you activate them tell you they are AOE weapons and can get you concorded. If "concord might shoot you" was supposed to prevent you from activating modules then you wouldn't be able to shoot anyone besides war targets and criminals in >= 0.5.
It is specifically coded that you can't hit a station or a gate with a smartbomb. Stations I can understand as it stops people smartbombing everyone who tries to undock, but I really don't see the point with gates.

People used to sit outside the undocking point of stations and set the things off, killing everything that undocked immediately.

It use to be that you could only activate a smartbomb when you were at least 2.5 km from the gates. What this meant was that the area of effect overlapped the gate creating a great kill zone for those pods, shuttles, frigs, and interceptors that attempted to insta out of a system. To this day I still don't understand why the minimum activation range for gates was changed from 2.5 to 5.0 km.

Which is why I understand that they put the limit in on stations, but gates... meh. If it really was to help people using instas then I'm really quite appalled.

It's probably part of the reason they changed the criminal ways... Well, there's a video that demonstrates how it used to be.
The thing I'm refering to is the aiding a criminal, ie. repping or energy transfering, stuff like that.
This is the only thing I can think of, though I'm not going to fire a smartbomb near a gate to test,(already accidentally scrammed/shot at a gate yesterday). Just assuming if what's said is correct, about not being able to fire smartbombs near gates.

Another reason for the change of smartbombs and gates was due to the vast hue and cry over people being CONCORDonked whilst ratting near gates, if the set off a smartbomb.
The problem is that smartbombs are anything but.

Smartbombs, splashdamage from missiles, missiles hitting something else then their intended target when that something else crossed their trajectory, it's all been nerfed because of the whines of the stupid.

It's been said already but you could use smartbombs and kill ships coming out of warp or approaching the gate. The biggest reason for the nerf though was people like me sitting outside of stations and instapopping intruders that were undocking. -------------------------------------------

Another reason might be that if you are camping a gate and have a couple bs's tactically spread out, when you hear the gate 'whhhhjjjjjj', everyone hits the smart bomb and reveals (or pops) the person that just jumped through. Perhaps even before he has loaded the new session...
