Excellent thread. Some very good recommendations. This is one of thse things I feel should have preceded Kali but has been put on the backburner because of the effort involving in pushing out gameplay content.
CCP - We understand it may not be a high priority right now but please take some time to re-visit the sound and music and improve it. Otherwise it will start to let down the rest of the game.

im only 4 or so months in, and i turned my music off after 3 days.. it sucks! regular pea shooting sounds from my guns are on however, but still degrade performance when your being ambushed....
there ARE gun charging sounds on the mega ion cannon's (hybrid), which are pretty nice.. but its a 'charge, charge, and throw a pebble at you' sound.
fix the game before the sound.. but sound would be nice too!

Amen to that bro! 'start to let down'? i'd say it already is dragging the game down. <<<< No Boundaries, No Fences, Fly Free Or Die Trying >>>>

Good audio design is a key part of the overall experience. It's what takes the game from "That was fun" to "That was ******* awesome!" Play something like Gears of War with the sound off. It's still fun, it still looks good, but it doesn't make you want to take cover behind the coffee table.
This is the only MMO (or epic-scaled single player game) I've played where turning the sound off doesn't make me miss it, and that's a terrible shame. As that video someone posted earlier shows, Eve is precisely the kind of game where the audio is an opportunity to knock our socks off.
So get that audio FX house on the phone already, will ya'?
This is however a testament to how well designed eve is, when people will play the game without sound and still have a good gaming experience year after year. But just image what people would feel when playing the game if the sound lived up to the rest of it. Imo it would make a gaming experience like no other. EVE has the best potential of any game I can think of tbh, it just needs a bit more effort in more than just graphics to make it a well rounded experience instead of putting 99% of effort into graphics and basicly nothing at all into sound. Sound can be improved in the same aspect as graphics, just don't, please don't forget about the sound devs. Wont anyone think of the children?! (sorry it just kind of fitted in there) edit typos

inties should sound like pod racers, and you should get the boost sound when you hit the AB or WMD. (I dream of tie fighters but that would be a bit much) Battleships and Cap ships should have a low gravely rumble.
And pulse lasers should have a snap sound and then a hiss of coolant being discharged. Pew Pew is getting boring. Large cannons should sound like cannons. (I really want fireballs and hanging smoke effects but that isnt happening) Hybrids have good sound but i think the sound of electrical arcing after each shot would be cool. missiles large missiles should have a fading screeching sound, reversed for incoming missiles.
Eve doesn't need a new score it need an ingame player for our mp3s, winamp clone would be awesome. ------------- Cadet Lithalnas - Logistics Division - Hadean Drive Yards

Good ideas these. But i'm afraid filling in proper effects if but the smallest part of what needs to be done. Point is, sound slows the game down horrendously, which causes many people to just turn them off. The game nearly freezes up even on very fast, very modern computers when it tries to make the explosion of forty concurrent heavy missile impacts heard. So we need a more modern sound engine. One capable of giving us 'schweeeeEEEEEE BOOOM" cruise missile impacts and 'rumblerumbleRUMBLERUMBLERUMBLERUMBLErumblerumble' battleship flypasts. One capable of letting us our own playlists of mp3 without flinching. One integrating comms jamming with the inbuilt voice comms (how cool would that be!). But most importantly a sound engine that does not choke the game everytime lots of sudden sh!t happens. Furthermore, I think the game needs tactical audio queues.

by audio queues do you mean having 40 cruise missile explosion sounds being added to a queue and triggering after each other even though they all hit at the same time? Not sure if it's posible in a sound engine, but it would be better if they could make sounds merge instead of having trigger sounds like "cruise missile hit = cruisemissile.wav", cause that's how it feels like now. Some of the newer fps games must have some kind of fluent sound engines where the sound engine itself has a sort of AI that can merge sounds so a computer doesn't have to play missile.wav 50 times in 1 second and instead merge the sound into something different?
As I've said before I have no real clue on sound and how it really works, but if it's doable, it should be done.

no, by audio queues i mean tactical information being brought to you by sound, such as the ship queueing you in on the fact that you are being hit, or that your shields are down etc etc. This could either be the ships voicce telling you about it, or just an assortment of beeps and whoops. either way, we need this imho.
About the fifty cruise missiles impacting at once, most games only dedicate a certain number of audio channels to such things, and the rest of the booms just dont get played. which is fine in my book. it'll still sound like you're getting bombed to the stone age

i was thinking maybe they will change some things for Revelations? i didnt hear anything fantastic however...
JUST MAKE THE SOUND MOD-ABLE... we can extract our own and deal with it ourselves.. but i would prefer real sounds.

As I wrote in another thread:Wouldn't it be atmospheric to hear the sounds of asteroids grinding and knocking together while you're mining or ratting. Like the tent scenes in The Blair Witch Project. Add in a very occasional sound of falling stones and it could be quite creepy.
Totally unrealistic of course because there is no sound in space but since the whole layout of asteroid belts in Eve is already totally unrealistic (as indeed so much of Eve) who cares? It's a game and good audio can improve our enjoyment of it.
Oh and at gates/stations bring back the audio chatter.
And when a ship warp aways we should be able to hear it go. Different ships=different sounds as well. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

The guys who are in charge of that must have huge holidays since the release of EVE. Time to get back to work

Yea, kind of like in a combat flight sim when your plane get hit by a missile and the female voice keep spouting one warning after another "radar failure, acs failure, acm failure" etc =)

umm no, rather like before the missile impacts You hear a low growling or chirping sound when your jet is being painted by a search radar in a jet sim. If that radar locks on, it goes beep beep beep (you are being locked onto!) Then if that radar goes into missile guidance mode, the beeping becomes quite **** urgent. Those are the ways in which sound is tactically important. In eve, it would also be rather impartant to have sounds of the sort you alluded to, damage being reported etc. <<<< No Boundaries, No Fences, Fly Free Or Die Trying >>>>

But of course. Just as graphics aren't just for pretty window dressing, we get some important information for playing the game from them. Such as the glow of the shield booster, and of course the graphical information from the UI such as the meatball. Sound likewise isn't just pretty window dressing, its a highly important source of information, that makes playing the game not only easier, but also more immersive and thus more fun.

Gee, that was just soooo cliche, but still - Haven't played the game with sound for more than a year. Can't even remember what it sounds like.

I would weep for joy if the sounds were to be made up to the level of the new graphics. Currently it is probably the single element that most breaks immersion in the game for me.

If CCP would fix their sound engine, ie: get rid of the *****ling, glitching, skipping, popping, screeching and smearing.
I would be honored to contribute to the soundtrack as well as the sound design for new effects.

I've had sound off for about a year now, not because it's bad or anything, it just doesn't change.
I think what we all want is something a bit more interactive. Relaxing music in fleet combat is wierd.
For sound fx we need more meaty explosions sounds etc

Pilots reported crashes and comp reboots upon warping to some deadspace areas and acceleration gates in the help channel. The sound engine works as intended. --*=*=*--
The cause for this is not yet known, but we do have a possible fix in testing. by Sharkbait | 2006.09.20 |

Here's to hoping the right programmer will come along. is there a job opening set on the main page for it? Its very very good to see an official response to this issue. not only does it makes me feel all cuddly and warm for being heard by the gods, but it induces a lot of patience with the issue on hand because i know its on someones agenda now.
