So, I'm fresh to the game, obviously.
I'm Caldari and working on the Data Site Scanning. I've fitted by probe launcher, but I'm not able to find the 'how to launch' probes, and control them. Looking for the data site, and I guess I'm just looking for some assistance on the how to.
Some future explorer I'l be, haha |

The probe launcher uses probes as if they were missiles. So you also need to buy probes (8 of them), and then load them into the launcher by opening the fitting screen and dragging them to the launcher.
Then, in space, you will have a launcher icon that you can click on (or press F1) to launch the probes.
Then the probes are controlled from the probe scanner window, Alt-P I believe is the shortcut, and you want to be looking at the solar system map, so open the map too and switch it to solar system view.
Probe results will appear in the map as dots, and you can group your probes around them with closer resolutions (start at 16 or 32 au, then go down to 8 or 4, then finally to 2 au), until you see a signal of 100%, at which point you can bookmark that location or warp to it.
Don't forget to press the "recall probes" button when you're done. Don't leave them in space.
EDIT: Here's the EVE University guide. That place has decent guides, btw, worth clicking the links and reading up on stuff. |

Thank you very much! Will look at the Uni page, and try that out. I was launching and pulling them back in, haha.

Yeah, once you launch, open the map and open the probe scanner window; all the buttons for it will be in the probe scanner window. |

There are also plenty of youtube videos on probe scanning and exploration. The problem with that is scanning and exploration have gone through various changes over the years and depending on the age of the video some parts of it may no longer be valid. However for someone brand new to scanning I would guess that even the oldest most out of date scanning video would teach you some useful information. It has not changed that much where old videos would be completely useless, just that they would have some inaccuracies in them. |

Default hotkey to bring up the probe interface is I wanna say Alt-P, and the default to bring up the system map is F10. You can also find the former by clicking on the scanner button to the left of your capacitor wheel.
Probes are launched by activating the module, from there they're controlled from the aforementioned probing interface.
As a beginner, just use pinpoint formation for everything, change the size/range of the formation by grabbing and sliding the edge of the bubble graphic, and move the formation around with the box in the middle (grabbing a face lets you freehand it around in that plane, the arrows do the obvious).
As you get more experience, try holding alt and shift to muck with individual probes, and maybe think about how d-scan works if you want to get into combat probing. |
