Started off fine, despite some long travel times, the game was fun. However, it started to quickly decline. Didn't really feel any motivation to play since I could progress whether I was offline or online. All the corps I asked about joining turned me down because I wasent far enough into the game. The missions got repetitive. Then tonight I hit Worlds Collide which I suppose did it for me. I tried, and tried to beat this mission. Someone suggested getting a afterburner, so I did. I got through the 2nd gate before being swarmed, and tried warping out, but died.
So, apart from my little rant here, I just have to ask. What am I doing wrong? Why aren't I enjoying this game? I truly want to like this game because of the serious lack of complex MMO's out there, but every time I log in I'm just met with constant frustration.

The joys of this game come from player interaction.
Face it. Compared to other games the PvE sucks.
What keeps people here for years are the friendships and enemies made and the intrigues and battles. For many PvE is just a means to an end.

Well, learn how to play better. There are alot of corps that will take new players. (as long as they arent on trial accounts) Look for a newbie friendly one in empire. Next learn which missions to stay away from. Worlds collide is the single hardest lvl 1 mission. EVERYONE who plays eve has died atleast once on it. (well almost everyone) So untill you get more mission experience or a better ship stay away from that one. Next find a goal in the game and play to get to it.

I would suggest logging in only to learn how to play and change skills or talk to people in public chats for the next month or so tbh. Or if your really have nothing else to do, find a group of players relatively in the same boat as you concerning sp and game experience. Its always more fun to mine in your probe with other guys to talk to.

Worlds Collide is a bit of a tough mission the first time you try it.
The basic thing is that you do not have to fight any of the enemies in the first room (Make sure you take the left hand gate, the other one is bad juju). And in the second room, you only have to fight 5 of the enemies (the first 2 that aggro you on warp in and the 3 near the next gate). Fly away from all the other mobs when that happens.
Remember, Platinum Insurance for all your ships and make sure your clone is fully covered.
I started having a lot more fun once I got into a Cruiser.

Ask lots of questions in local, take everything said with a grain of salt until you get a feel for who's giving you good data.
WC is tough. It takes a fast ship, it takes a bit of knowledge that you can gate through without firing a shot until the last room and you need to know which gates to jump through. I'd give you that info, but I haven't done WC in 4 months.
In the mean time, keep learning skills. I went with the pack mostly and got my learning skills up first except for some critical ones to get through level 1 missions, and haven't looked back.
I'm generally very quiet on local, which is my failing and one that you should avoid. If you are not spamming, most folks in empire will answer questions honestly.
If you do something stupid, admit it and correct it. I decided to go hunt some macro miners recently by tipping cans. The first can I found held a boat load of t-2 equipment. Turned out a macro hunter had recently killed a bs who was protecting the miners. He was then podded. When he told me the kill was his, we went to a station and I gave him his stuff. He turned around and gave me a great deal of good adivce and 4 frigates .
What goes around comes around in this game.
It's as much or as little as you want to make it.
But always keep your learning up.

Eve University takes new players. You'll find them on the recruitment forum and they're teach you everything.

It sounds like you wanted a game that would challenge you, and you're getting what you wanted to find. Eve is definately "complex", and the learning curve is pretty steep in comparison to most other MMO offerings out there. The NPC corps really aren't a bad place to start. Get to know the people running missions in the systems you run in. Ask for help on the tough ones, and when you can't get help, learn which ones you need to take a pass on for now. With time, your skills will increase, as will your knowledge of game mechanics and mission structure/npc AI. Take the time now to work on your skills and build relations with your fellow pod pilots.
One thing's for sure. Eve will give you a whole new perception of time when it comes to skilling up. When you first start, it may seem like that week long train is an eternity, and before long, a week long skill train will be the "short one". Regardless of the duration, enjoy the fact that you're training while you're not online. Eve is designed to free you from things like leveling so you can just play the game. Travel is hopefully about to change for the better too.
Your toughest time in Eve is the first 2 to 3 months. After that, you'll look back and laugh at some of the mistakes you're making right now. If things get frustrating, find some buds to mine with, or take a little break for a bit. Hang in there though, cause it gets a whole lot better than it is right now.

Edited by: Shagrath Xarra on 05/11/2006 05:39:33 Not sure why the OP is having troble finding a corp. I only had 800K SPs when I posted a recruitment thread in the Recruitment section of these boards and ended up with 20+ in game mails asking me to talk to them about joining their corps. Most of the offers were from some very good established corps and not "fly by the seat of their pants" operations. I had my pick of Pirating corps, Manufacturing, Industrial, PvP, Low sec, Empire, 0.0 corps.
My advice is to post a recruitment thread like I did, tell about your in game character and what you hope to accomplish and then sort through the offers, talk to the corp members who are recruiting you and find the one you think you will like the best based upon what you want to do in this game.
Don't get hung up on World's Collide either. I lost 3-4 Frigates when i first started doing lvl 1 missions and WC. I eventually learned the trick to that mission and it was very easy afterwards. Look it up in the Mission boards because it is too wordy to explain to you here.

The sheer amount of knowlage you have ot absorb at first can be daunting. Keep trying to find a player run corp. There are many out there that will take in complete noobs, as long as you are not on a trial account.
Tbh I feel eve has just the right amout of grind to make ship loss sting a bit but not tie up the whole game in money making. Take some time and learn about the ships you are flying and how the different modules work. Once you have a basic understanding of the game mechanics then find another corp with people who like to play the game the same way you do. It really is the people that make this game great, thats why you see so many telling you to get into a player run corp.

How to beat WC (and other level 1 missions):
1. Find out what your strongest racial frigate is (Caldari=Merlin, Gallente=Tristan, Amarr=Punisher, Minmatar=Rifter), and train for it. 2. Go to Ships&Modules forums, find a tech1 setup for that ship and train for it. 3. Watch your uber frig tear those NPCs

When first starting out, I managed to find some really really helpful people in local and in the newbie corp I was in, you got ask questions in this game, theres sooooooo much depth to it, it can baffle the unwary.
Also, its an MMO, meet people and get a group, then re-attack the mission :D
There are newbie corps out there, there is a large elitist group to Eve, but thats the same in any MMO.
Come back, its awesome. I am so regretting not carrying on with the game when I left 2 months after it went retail, and doing the final beta. Unlike alot of games, this one has got the legs to carry on for many years to come.

Find a good corp. Open yourself up. Be part of something bigger than yourself.
Eve *can* be soloed. But its boring, very boring.

Edited by: GM Faolchu on 05/11/2006 06:30:28 Hi Beazal,
There are a few corporations out there who will accept new players, EVE University being one of them try checking the corporation recruitment forum. Also Worlds Collide is a very difficult mission and you may find taking a friend along the only way to complete it or getting in a better ship.
Also this game has a very steep learning curve so if you dont get something ask a question and try again. And if you still dont get it ask another question dont be afraid to the Rookie Help Channel and Help Channel are places to ask. And try to make friends and by all means make a post in the recruitment forum and ask for a corporation to join...someone will make you an offer.
But welcome to the game and I hope things become easier for you as Im sure they will.
Good Luck.

Have we perhaps unearthed an Eve-University alt?
Really though, once upon a time I nearly quit the game because I got bored with missions. The PVE is crap compared to other games, really.
The solution is to join a corp and meet some nice people and just enjoy yourself.
What corp, you say? Well, why not HCU (EDIT: Egh, the website looks much better ingame)? We've got plenty of people here to help you learn the game, and we're doing tons of fun stuff nowadays. Have you ever herad your CEO tell the gang of alliance mates on Vent that you're a hostile, and listen to them start to probe you out before they figured out he was joking? Well, I have. Twenty minutes ago.
If you've got any interest, send a mail to myself (WARNING: I'm out of game alot), Cerulean Fire or Siigari Kitawa. 400x120@24000 bytes Maximum please. Mail [email protected] for more information. - Acario Vito |

edit: A GM, posting on the forums for a non-critical thread . This is literally a first, at least for me

I agree with people here... you should try to join Eve University. About the offline training, you shouldnt really see skillpoints as a matter of progress in this game. Its more about having fun doing what you want (trading, fighting, mining etc). And soon comes Exploration with Kali, which I think will give more people something specific to do besides missions.
Other than that, the pvp is fun in this game, because you can beat older players quite easily if you are a better player and use better tactics.
