I try to persuade people to come and play EVE. Most are MMORPG players so they know a little about EVE and they are put off by the real time travel between systems which can be boring. Never the less, I still try to get people to join what was a great game. Now I have to explain to them as well as the boring traveling between systems, that they may have to wait in a queue when they get to a gate for it to activate, like I was for 4 mins this evening. Not to mention queues to log on now.
"Dont worry" I tell them, "it is only like that when it is busy." However the busy times are evenings and weekends when most people are able to play.
CCP is so proud of the single universe server setup. However, the amount of players has exceeded the capability of the hardware/software or even both. I think it is time that CCP swallowed their pride and split it up in to more manageable clusters like they do on most MMORPG, and give us the quality of service and gaming we deserve and are paying for.
I do not pay ú9 a month, to lost ships because modules will not activated during missions. I do not pay ú9 a month, to wait 30+seconds to move a module from my ship when fitting. I do not pay ú9 a month, to sit at a jump gate for 4 mins in a queue.
I think I will give the game another month and then I am quitting. After 2 and a half years, it will be hard to do, but the subscrition is now a waste of my money.
P.S. Sorry for the moan, but I just had to vent my anger.

Splitting the server up into different instances would be really stupid and kill the entire idea behind the single universe concept.
Adding additional hardware and upgrading the hardware would do good for cutting down on the lag issues, though. ----- CEO, Astrum Contract Services Group

If you don't pay ú9 a month to do something.... don't pay!
And with the queuing system - oh i'm sorry, I'll wait a bit longer and you can go first!

CCP has already staed that they have made an order of more hardware in anticipation for Kali. So after the patch up of Kali is done once it goes live expect things to get smoother. For the mean time avoid busy systems unless u rly need something.

In a few ques tonight, what that guy said earlier about it all being linked to load balancing seemed to be correct... i was lagging and que'ing in the center and down at the backside of eve with nobody around.
Weird realy:/
More hardware might work i guess, who knows... the sames been said 2-3 times before..
Personaly i don't think they will ever get on top on it...
But whatever, the core issues of lagging, ques in general don't realy effect me, i can live with it. ______

I caught a 10 minute queue in lowsec today , and just spent the last hour undocking from Jita (lol, I know, I'm not whining ).
While I sympathize with the OP, I don't think we need to split up the servers...the problem I see coming is, at what point does it become economically unviable to maintain a single shard world?

I can semi-sympathise with your post, though the way it's worded comes across as just a whine. Anyway, the lag all around has got worse. Where I used to have a bit of lag and no queues, now I constantly encounter lag and have hit several queues.
Ordering more yaardware is a good thing, but as with the major yaardware upgrade that happened earlier this year, the benefits will probably be fleeting. They're throwing band-aids over problems all over the place but not seemingly addressing the root causes. The hardware will help in the short term but as more people join, the problems will again appear and we'll be in the same situation we're in today.
It's not an easy task by any means. I do seriously think CCP needs to get 100% behind server improvements and fix the current lag issues. I know they've got 'people working on it', but so far that hasn't helped lag from a customer's point of view. Sure, their metrics, RAM and CPU usage may have gone down a bit, but from my perspective the lag is still as bad as it has ever been.

I love EVE just as much as the next guy. Its depth is amazing. The devs have created an awesome environment for player-player interaction (which is the only content that truly remains entertaining) that they keep developing and adding to.
I also realize that the whining can get old. It's an online game with a diverse subscriber base. You're always going to have someone whining about something or the other.
However, you posters who jump someone's case for bringing up the issue of increasing lag and queues need to step back and think for a second. It is a very real issue that can make the game not fun at all.
not fun = lost subscriptions = less profitable business venture = possibly no more EVE.
I realize that the queue monster doesn't rear its ugly head to everyone with the same frequency. I realize that some people have more tolerance for delays whilst playing than do others. Understand that the OP and others who have started similar topics have reached or are near their tolerance. That means a soon to be lost subscription, which... contrary to popular belief, isn't good for anyone's EVE addiction.
The constructive thing to do here would be to (politely and kindly) impress upon CCP just how urgently we require them to take action to SOLVE these problems. I know that they are ordering new hardware. Our job is to convince them to order/install it sooner. Order more hardware, recode the load balancing software, whatever it takes. Show them how important a lag-free gaming experience is to you. Probably much more so than Kali content (as much as I am looking forward to it).
PS Good greif, enough with the name-calling and general childishness. If you disagree, just say so politely and let that be that.

Firstly as to the insults about me being a kid in the playground, please grow up. I have not replied because I dont spend every waking minute on the internet like some.
Siriyana: Splitting the server up into different instances would be really stupid and kill the entire idea behind the single universe concept. I totally agree, the single universe is a great achievement. A good idea can become a bad idea.
Admai Sket: If you don't pay ú9 a month to do something.... don't pay! And with the queuing system - oh i'm sorry, I'll wait a bit longer and you can go first! LOL. A year ago I canceled my subscription for 3 months because of simalar problems and I may do again. Thanks for the offer of letting me go first. ;)
Rehmes: CCP has already staed that they have made an order of more hardware in anticipation for Kali. So after the patch up of Kali is done once it goes live expect things to get smoother. For the mean time avoid busy systems unless u rly need something. If they have ordered new hardware, it will be months before it goes live. Its hard to avoid busy systems now. There are not many places where there are few people. Even the POS I use 10 jumps in to 0.0 space, has 20 people at a time in it.
Sphit Ker: I totally undertand your point! I got a potential subscriber here last week but he laughted away seing how long it is to move around.. I got 4 people to sign up for the trial. None of them joined because they said the traveling was boring.
Gonada: Seriously do it dont whine, moan, or post. frikin leave , go back to wow. It'll relieve the lag and clear up all the B.S. petitions that are out there from you guys claiming ships lost to lag instead of the real culprit: stupidity. Is there a need to be insulting? I have never played WoW and never will. I have done 3 petitions ever in 2 and a half years. 1 lost ship, 1 spam petition and 1 bug petition after a patch. So please engage your brain cell before posting such a sweeping statement.
Tas Devil: Just one thought ? Are you the alt of a WoW developper ? Cause it was just so obvious ! Na, I'm not. The first time I have actaully seen WoW properly was on South Park.
Ice Conch: never been gate queued, whenever i was login queued, i just restarted client and voila! no more queue. Yeah i learned that very quick. First time I waited and never got on. But if you quit and try again you get straight on.
Alekto Erinys: The constructive thing to do here would be to (politely and kindly) impress upon CCP just how urgently we require them to take action to SOLVE these problems. I know that they are ordering new hardware. Our job is to convince them to order/install it sooner I completely agree. That was my intention. I just wanted an email address when I can send an email basically saying, why my feeling where. That I love the game, and its starting to get ruined and nearly unplayable by the lag. I am a believer in constructive critaism, and that is all i wanted to leave. But I could not find an address to send it to. The only way to send it (that I could find) was via petition (which will clog it up and pointless) or on the forum. But my frustration increased when I could not find some where to contact them directly.

Well this is the things that puzzle me...
1) People complain how long traveltime there is...
Answer, I tried WoW, and man did I have to run around ALOT!!!! and it was not fun running from one end of Darkshore to the other.... and constantly had to adjust my way of running or I got stuck at a tree running mad without getting anywhere.
I actually prefer the way EVE is build up when it comes to traveltime.
and I move from north to south constantly in corpbusiness as my missionsystems are 30 jumps away from corp HQ. It honestly gives me time to do things I normally don't have time to do.
2) Que.
Answer: I have NEVER had to sit in a que in EVE, never... I understand that some do have a problem with this but I can't understand it being such a big problem... it can't be or I must have ended up in ques long time ago would I not ?
3) Lag...
Answer: I admit I have never joined any big fleetbattles, I hardly ever is in Jita (actually less than 5 times in my eve-time)... I from time to time experience some lag but very very very few times it can be classified as BAD.
So what do I do that must be right ??? I stay away from hub systems (I trade in Amarr yes but I don't stay there very long), I do my missions in Low sec, I know there is a Node problem so why bother blobwar then ?
Well that is the things that puzzle me abit atleast.. when I read the complaint on this site... to be honest I check the forums less and less ... mostly because of unjustified whining !!! ---------------------------------------------- "When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child: now that I am become a man, I have put away childish things." 1 cor. |

I do that too. I live in a remote bit of low-sec in a fairly unpopular region. I used to be one of those annoying people who said "I never get lag".
This weekend, I played for about an hour after downtime before the lag made things ridiculous. I toyed with the idea of moving to one of my old hunting grounds to avoid the lag, but travel was so soul-destroying that I gave up.
Whatever I did that was "right" now seems to be "wrong".

I do not want a split universe but I agree with the OP. Lag and queues are causing problems. I was stuck in a queue on EVERY gate I tried to pass last night. This was in a deserted 0.0 area.
I do not wish to leave EVE but the lag and queues is ruining my gameplay and it may eventually make me try something else.

It has been getting worse lately, and then I am talking about when server has comparable amount of users.
However, it is not about swallowing pride when it comes to splitting up the servers, it's about ruining the game's foundation and concept. It won't really benefit the game world at all, considering that it is built completely around the concept that PvP must matter and make impact. Splitting the server up will remove this completely.
As far as World of Warcraft and South Park is concerned. Well, aside from that guy running around killing other players, it was extremely accurate. Should be said, too, that WoW is far from lag free. The month I played it I did dabble in what PvP WoW offered, and there were more than one occasion when I was killed by several people I couldn't see. WoW isn't lag free because of it's server architecture, it's lag free because it is built around, and forces players to do, small scale combat. Essentially, comparably, WoW combat involves less than 20 entities in the immediate local. So as far as a WoW-ization of EVE in order to reduce lag, splitting servers up isn't the way to go, but a more cunning distribution of content (nuking Jita), limiting gangs to 5-6 players with possibility for large gangs of max 50 players, and then work very hard to remove the incentives to have more than 50 players in one local at a time*. Those are the keys - not split servers.
* Can only really be done by removing PvP, but let's not get THAT specific. - Three years old |

Edited by: Elgar Lightfoot on 16/10/2006 11:07:19 I enticed 4 new players to join me these last few weeks. I've not experienced any queues or poor service in all my time of playing. I have noticed a bit of lag, and although annoying, it's not cause any major problems (yet).
I have played on many sharded and instanced world MMO's and I MUCH prefer the single universe to any of them. If I speak to anyone that plays EVE I know they play in my galaxy.
