As I recall, when eve was initially introduced to the public it was touted as having 5 playable races. All of the fanfare at the time indicated that the Jove would come into play later but would, in fact, be availabe to regular players (eventually).
Here it is 3+ years later and still no Jove (save devs playing them). So will players ever be able to use the Jovian race or will they remain forever soley the playthings of ccp's developers?

They didn't say WHEN you could be Jovian . Considering CCP have a general plan for Eve for years to come, I wouldn't be too expectant for them to arrive that soon.

Once again, the kiddies wanna be the "special" characters.
It was Jedi in SWG. Whining and whining until the holocron craze started. Then whining and whining until the village. Then whining and whining until they were a playable class to begin with.
When everyone is "special" NO ONE IS SPECIAL.
No Jovian players. Ever.

The GMs and devs need to get together and do another "Joves gank a warpath to downtown Empire" event, so all the new people can feel the joy/sorrow of facing horribly overpowered Jove ships.

Nah just have salvador sarapati steal another titan. Keep the same HP and stats. Just give it a superweapon this time. Oh yeah and have him take a looong detour through jita/rens/ours instead of heading straight back home to Serpentis Prime. ---------------------------------------- Back for a month cus BS5 finished..... |

I think it would be cool if the made it so any character could "evolve" into a Jove. Like if you had a certain, outragously high, amount of skillpoints, you could become a Jove, but you lose all the skill points in the process. So you would be a Jove noob. They'd also need to tone down the wtfpwnage of Jove ships. ------------------------ The Almighty says this must be a fashionable fight. Slippery slope. The Jedi craze in SWG all over again.
No alpha classes in MMOs. It's bad voodoo.

Evelyn,
I remember from beta, tha jovians were supposed to be the fifth race. They didn't need to be all super, above all other races, just different. Perhaps CCP should also focus on making the other races more different between themselves too.
Regardless of the Jedi syndrome, I believe and want Jovians in game. I would settle for just opening up Jovian space and making newer jovian technology available, although hard to obtain.(spread it over all the regions, so that there is no influx or great change in hunting patterns....) The Jovian region would be the area where these new toys would be necessary...

Then what? People will get bored of the Jovians and want to play as The Endhuanni race. Naaah, The Jovians shouldn't be a playable race, although I'd like to see more of them in the game.

Considering Jovians have been through hundreds of years of mutations to become 'evolved' into Jovians themselves, I don't see how it would even be possible to 'evolve' yourself into a Jovian within any reasonable amount of time, or without extremely harsh penalties such as succumbing to the Jovian Disease.
Originally by: Dr YD Naaah, The Jovians shouldn't be a playable race, although I'd like to see more of them in the game.
Tbh any sighting of Jovians should be a rare sight, seeing as they want to be secretive and stay hidden at times. Though random jovian agents appearing out of the blue in deadend/nowhere systems to ask for help would be interesting. They should be something you may never see, not something you would see every day.
All in all, evolving into a Jovian or making them a playable character = bad idea. __________ Spreading the word of Enlightenment with the grace of God and Empire. Lieutenant for the Imperial Navy. |

Evolve into a Jove?
This isn't Pokemon-Online, players don't evolve.
You wouldn't just 'become jove'. You'd have your Caldari, or Gallente in your case, mind, regardless of the clone, and if you were inserted into a Jovian body clone, you'd risk the fun of the Jovian disease. Maybe some nice permdeath to go with it?
If CCP ever does make the (imo) horrible choice of making Jove playable, they should be something you have to apply for, and come with stipulations, such as you cannot sell/trade them, you must be in-character at all times...etc. Anyone who wants to be a Jove, should have to truly BE A JOVE. Also don't allow them to update clones or clone jump due to their disease. Jove ships and mods would be Jovian only.
To whoever said the joveships pwn, well, good, that's yet another reason to never make them playable.
Jove items would be so insanely powerful that it wouldn't be funny. Look at some of the drops angel cartel gives. Angels use ancient Jove technology that predates the current 4 empires. To say their current mods and ships would be imbalancing would be a gross understatement.

If the Jovians were ever to be playable they should be the only race with access to Jove-specific skills.
They should also have no stat above 5. They have a glorious past, but it broke them.

AURORA could have a field day with Jovians, if they wanted to. Mysterious sightings on the Caldari border. Maybe a strike for unknown reasons that flattens a POS somewhere.
Heck, maybe even a diplomatic delegation comes to town ..... just make sure to lock down the gates so the node doesn't crash from all those sightseers.

I agree with both of you. The selection procedure should be something really demanding, not just checking age of the character or whatever.

oh wait .. isn't ISD something that has a quite demanding selection procedure? ... you want to play jove? apply for ISD (no changes for the status quo though ... but not more work for the devs also ) ___________________

I don't see the need for a fifth race - especially for a race with overpowered technology, even with harsh entry requirements. Learn from SWG. Being "special" in a MMORPG simply doesn't work.
If the Jove are ever made playable, it would be neat if the Jovian Disease was worked in somehow... the only known lethal disease that can't be cured even by cloning into another body. Permadeath anyone? Originally by: SengH well given the number of features that were promised at release. I remember a basic form of contracts that they were supposed to implement at release. A number of features that weren't promised have been added. CCP has done a lot of work, but priorities can change.

Originally by: EVE FAQ 2.4 Does the game contain different races and classes?
The races in EVE are all of human origin, though they have evolved and some have been genetically altered until they have become quite distinct in appearance and characteristics. Players may choose to portray a character from four of the five races in EVE. These are: Amarr, Caldari, Gallente and Minmatar. Each race branches off into two bloodlines. The fifth race, Jovian, is unavailable to players at this time, though players will be given the opportunity to evolve into Jovians in the future.
I know the FAQ is extremely out of date, but this shows the original intent and as long as the FAQ says anything about turning Jove, I want it. Not for the leet stuff (though it would be nice to have some, of course), but simply for the improved attributes. Yes, I am a skillpoint wh-ore

I cannot understand this alpha-class nonsense. What a stupid arguement, considering that eve has NEVER had race-specific skills, adding Joves would assumably allow EVERYONE a chance to fly Jovian ships. Being a Jovian would give no real advantage, other than different stat/bloodline selections.

Leave it to roleplayers and only roleplayers to play jove, they're used to self-gimping so them going overboard isn't as much a threat as any of the larger entitys about gobbling up the all.
