Let's say you're a dedicated mission runner. Would it be better to just pick a corp/faction and go with it, or attempt to balance out factions so you don't get too negative with any one? My fear is that if I picked a faction and began their missions that I may regret it later (kali faction wars maybe or research agents etc).
Is it possible to maintain positive faction with everyone except pirates? If so what's the best method for balancing them? Do you skip storylines or do you alternate faction agents every X number of missions? Or do you just try to develop relations with a single agent/corp that would allow you to raise their parent faction after you get low (if this is possible)?
Also are any pirate factions worth the effort of maintaining?
Thanks in advance for any help.

if u run calderi navy and gallente begins to slip (use the courier agents for the gallente and others ) no sec loss due to the fact u kill nothing (kinda boring hauling stuff around but ....) its positive standing thats how u do it

Hi Engelbert,
I've been doing this since the last 10 months or so and i am still at positive with all the empire factions. I run only kill missions but keep away from those wich involves killing empire faction ships. Up to date i have been running missions for Caldari and Minmatar. Now i'm getting into COSMOS and am keeping a tight eye on my standings, but the gains/losses does seem to be the same. Another thing, the factions that i do not run missions for does not rise in standing and are balanced at a low number.

heard someone say that faction ships in cosmos missions don't give faction hits when you pop them...I can't vouch for that info, I guess pop something faction-ish then go to your standings and right-click "show transactions" and check it out.
I've used connections and diplomacy skills, mostly working Minmatar courier storylines (the ones that give direct racial adjustments) and I have like a 5.3 Minmatar Republic, and -0.73 Amarr (and corresponding but lesser Gallente/Caldari standings.)
Recently I decided to start running some Imperial Arms couriers to get some Amarr storyline, and try to put both at least into positive numbers, so when Kali comes calling, I won't run too far afoul of gate guards (not knowing what they really have in mind for Kali, but don't want to not be able to enter Amarr regions for instance. Amarr have a larger portion of 0.5+ than Minmatar do.)
So far done 2 storylines for small adjustments (can only use level 2 Imp Arms so far) but the consistent thing is that the adjustment up percentage-wise for Amarr is always twice the adjustment down for Minmatar. Eventually one might think they would meet around 2.something...
Hard to judge by percentages of course. For a positive adjustment, it's the percent of the distance remaining from current standing to +10.0, while for negative adjustment it's the opposite (percent of the distance from current standing to -10.0)
Stands to reason a low standing rises faster, and a high standing drops faster.

These table may be of use to you:
http://www.newedenlibrary.net/tmp/standings.html
They show the derived faction standing changes you receive from completing important (storyline / COSMOS) missions. You can use this to work out how best to maximise your standings while maintaining some sort of balance.
Cheers, Arrs.
