Hi everyone, back in 2010 I had made a first poster with all available ships ingame at that time, using screenshots I took myself with the ingame ship preview. I recently updated the tools I used back then to manage taking the screenshots, and created a new edition for 2014.
Since there are a lot more ships now than in 2010, I split the posters by race:
Minmatar Republic Amarr Empire Gallente Federation Caldari State
For those interested, there's also the poster with all 418 currently available ships:

Omg. You're the bomb.
Gankers are sociopaths who would rather use their time-in-place advantage to jump and one-shot a noob than fight straight-up someone who poses a challenge to them. If you need to call a ganker a "person," have at it. He is what he is.

Nice work, if you wouldn't mind a little constructive criticism, all of the backdrops are too dark to the point they blend too much with the ship with the exception of the gallente one IMO. I do appreciate them very much though.

Edit: I have crap monitors and dont take any time to adjust them so maybe its just that.
Yes, that's a bit problematic. But sadly that's how they come out of the ingame previews. I have already lightened them up slightly, but more would make details come out that aren't so pretty (like the coarse gradients in the nebulae). For an optimal job, you'd have to focus on the ships themselves - but that's beyond what I am willing to invest time-wise :)
The again, I suppose I could try running a filter on the screenshots that lightens them up more in the middle... I'll give it a test run. |

There's enough people that read GD that you could probably get us to provide you some screen shots of pretty much every ship in the game. I can fly almost every subcap there is, and it wouldn't be too difficult for me to log into Sisi, spend a few thousand isk on whatever subcap ships you can't fly, then warp to the sun and get a good bright screen shot. I'm sure if you asked nicely that others would add screenshots to fill in the blanks.
That brings up another thing. In two days the new lighting physics goes into effect.
Besides, I want to get prints of this made into posters. I have a long bare wall in my apartment that would look nice with framed EvE posters on it.
EvE is hard. It's harder if you're stupid.

Try something like photoshop unsharp mask - threshold 20, 3 pixels, 150%

Drop me a mail if you'd like me to help in this.
Oh yes, the new lighting physics. These posters have been a while in the making - so long, even, that nobody knew there was going to be lighting physics :) It has bugged me to no end to finish the posters right before that change!
Calling on the community to help build the next iteration is a very good idea... It'll require a bit of preparation, but it could be well worth it. Having screenshots of the ships in space can only be better than the preview window. The way I see it, we'd need an endpoint like a mini website where you can see which ship screenshots are missing, and to submit your own. We'd definitely need a guide on how to take the screenshots so we get consistent results though.
As for the prints, the current posters are large enough for printing, and DeviantART offers a good selection of printing options. I can enable these features for the posters, and you can see if there are formats you'd like. I'll drop you an evemail as well! |

Hi Hasikan, unsharp mask only sharpens images - it can bring out detail, but in this case we don't want to enhance the entire image - the background should be left as-is, and only enhance the ships themselves so they stand out more. In the case of Minmatar or Caldari ships for example, they are so close to the background that there is no way to automate highlighting them.
I am working on some new ideas though - it would be possible by substracting a full background image to extract a rough shape of a ship, which would make it possible to at least lighten it up a bit. I'll report my findings :) |

No... what's PBR? If it could give me a way to automate taking the ship screenshots, I'd love to hear about it. I took these all manually with the ingame preview. |

When I saw the title I got pretty excited that someone was redoing T'Ambers well loved 'Ships of EVE' lotto.
While I was a little disappointed about it not being that, this is still pretty cool.

Ah, thanks for clarifying Grauth. Yes, I'll wait for the 2015 edition to do it with thew new rendering, as I'm quite sure there will be some tweaks coming. I also wanted to do some more research on alternative methods for taking the screenshots, although editing them takes even more time. |

While often being somewhat tricky to handle, quick mask mode would indeed allow creating a rough selection that I could use to lighten the ships. However, this means that I have to edit most of the screenshots this way (at least Caldari and Minmatar). That would turn the operation into a fulltime job :) In the posters you only see the front view, but I have front and side views which are used for my EVE ShipQuickinfo WordPress plugin. Fancy editing 430-ish images this way!
What I would need is even a rough way to detect the ship shapes automatically and create a lightening template from it. I would only have to go back on some to adjust it if needed. |

You know, I could just run the screenshots through a vector tracing tool... could even have some artistic value |
