The American numerical date convention came about as a shortening of the traditional American written form: December 6th, 2014. The day part (conceptually) was "December sixth", the year part was a qualifier.
Having said that, when I record the date with my signature on paperwork, I always hand-write it like 6 Dec 2014 unless the format is specified.
On a computer: ISO 8601, there is no other way.

The RSS feed provides a combined date and time in ISO 8601. (You should find the same format in all our other feeds.)
Example: 2014-12-06T14:55:59Z
How you receive the DateTime of the post may depend on your browser or RSS reader. Chrome gives you the unmodified ISO 8601 date-time, while Firefox gives you something more along the lines of 2014.12.06 14:55.

As in 9/11 type dates you mean. Yes it always looks odd from an English point of view. I think a lot of countries do things back to front although those countries probably think the same of us.
Regarding standardisation it can often result in bad results. Just look at the 'PIGS' (Portugal, Ireland, Greece, & Spain.) and what joining the EU & more so the Euro currency has done to their peoples. What was that Star Trek phrase - 'Infinite Diversity in ........
