Ok forum warriors and CCP devs,
I have always had this stupid idea to increase immersion in EVE involving the crew. I am not saying this is the best idea ever but it may open some doors.
When you are flying in lowsec and you and your gang of valiant knights blow up a dangerous itteron, you rarely find yourself thinking, "I just ended 5000 crew member's lives in that very moment! Holy Kanolis that was sweet!", instead you end up thinking "lawl i killed that noob get his pod".
That is why I suggest to you, that instead of "rigging" your ship with fancy doohickies, you instead hire a crew!
This in no way would change the mechanics or the rigging system, but would instead just replace the rig models with NPCs, potentialy with a personality.
I have thought up a short list of pros and cons as I know you defenders of general discussion hate walls of text.
PROS:
Added immersion! - It no longer feels like you are alone in your ship!
Use for the CQ! - Your crew could either stand around your CQ and say stupid NPC things, fly around in little shuttles below you to and from your ship or even be seen repairing your ship! (or maybe even walk around the station enviroment once that is completed)
What the hell is calibration anyway? - Calibration would be replaced with Crew Size, ie. 50 crew members for a gun crew and 100 to man the anti-EM shield bay!
More EVE personalities! - If you are like me, you know nothing about the EVE backstory, let your new gallente crew tell you about their exciting lives!
CONS:
Give you new reasons to want to explode! - Will your damned female crew member not shut up about her cat in the hangar? Self destruct and blow that b!tch up!
Angry Bitter Vets! - You seriously gonna take my trimarks away from me you 2010 punk? 0/10
Way too much effort for something so stupid as Crew Members! -
Thank you for your time |

I like the idea of having a crew onboard that can make a difference, but would be kinda hard making crewmembers out of salvage parts (if they were to replace rigs) ;) |

Guess I didn't really think that one through... Well food for thought, you could have a standard item named "crew", and then in combination with the rig making process, could be turned into a specific crew type? That really does throw a wrench in my plan doesnt it. |

I got rid of my crew. I was too afraid that my crew would just put me on mute and fly the ship without me.

Yes, crew exist, no they aren't implementing them soon, they were part of the original plan back when EVE was in its infancy. Yes, that means that trillions of people in EVE are pirates/willing to die on capsuleer ships. No, it doesn't make any sense. Deal with it. |

The first time I did a hard bank into a top-speed close orbit so I could actually use my blasters, I ended up having to sponge my crew off the back wall. I haven't replaced them since, which has actually made my ship much lighter. I know sometimes it's difficult to realize just how much you spend on incidental things each month or year, but seriously, EVE is very cheap entertainment compared to most things... If you are a smoker, smoke one less pack a week and pay for EVE, with money left over to pick up a cheap bundle of flowers for the EVE widow upstairs. |

The official Eve-books mention that yes indeed, the ships are crewed, by normal (mortal) people that chose to stay with their capsuleer of choice; for money/glory/lack of alternatives. sounds like a **** job to me! :) All games have QQ, but only Eve has Q.Q |

+1 because I would be amused by NPC's walking around my CQ or hanger view saying and doing stupid things.

OK, for adding immersion.
1)I don-¦t want 5.000 npc-¦s standing around in MY CQ., but it-¦s ok for these 1 to 5 exotic dancers.
2) I don-¦t want to see MILLIONS of npc-¦s walking around in stantions, if this feature will ever come. |

Damage control is like a crew if you think about it. When it is on, the crew is at stations, ready to repair damage. Also, if it was the crew, then there should be ones that benefits all types of things. I guess that module would be called "Variable Crew"
Crews that specialize in things like DAMAGE, or EWAR, MIssles, Guns, Drones....

From The Eve Chronicles - The Jovian Wet Grave
"This is a capsule," Anu said to the Caldari. "It is used to control a ship. With it a ship a big as this one can be controlled with only a handful of crew and smaller ships, like your frigates, can even be controlled by a single person." "How is this possible?" Ouriye asked. He was obviously skeptical, even if he didn't seem as surprised by what Anu said as the other Caldari. "The controller, captain if you like, of the ship is stationed inside the capsule. Through it, he's neural rigged to all parts of the ship. The capsule is like one gigantic computer, with the captain at the core, controlling everything." Any answered. "But how can a single man control a whole ship?" Ouriye pressed. "Thank you, captain, I was coming to that. As I said, the captain acts as the central unit in a highly advanced computer. This role allows him to access and evaluate data at extreme pace. He can easily handle the jobs it takes 5 or 10 people to do normally. It also makes him a better commander, he has better understanding and awareness of his environment and he's not boggled down by tedious crew management issues and frequent communication breakdowns are now history." Anu finished, looking over the faces of the thoughtful Caldari standing before him. "So what is the downside?" Pirkotan asked. "There is always a downside." "Not in this case, lieutenant," Anu replied. "The capsule offers greater control to ships, yet fewer crew members. As you know one of the biggest costs in maintaining a ship is training the crew, this cost is now much reduced. We Jovians are not numerous, yet we can field a very formidable fleet because of capsules." "So what about this capsule controller? Can anybody control this thing?" Ouriye probed, obviously eager to garner as much knowledge as he could about these capsules. "Not anybody, no," Any answered. "The controller must have the required neural implants." Pirkotan fingered the newly planted implants at the back of his neck; a grim realization dawning in his mind. "But why this huge structure? Couldn't the controller simply be strapped into a neural chair?" Ouriye inquired. "The neural riggings for the capsule are much more elaborate and advanced than those you know, captain; they require the user to be in complete stasis for efficient usage. The capsule is filled with a fluid, in which the captain floats. This fluid filters out all external interferences, as well as protecting and nourishing the captain." One of the Jovian aides had now opened a hologram blueprint of the capsule and Anu used it while explaining how it was built. "Also, the capsule has extremely strong armor, giving even more protection to the captain. We Jovians do not like unnecessary squandering of lives." Pirkotan thought Anu said this last sentence with an unusual fervor. |
