CARACAL vs MOA
Hi guys, I've got a bit of a dilemma concerning a viable cruiser at the moment. I mostly go hunting and ratting with my friend (who will be flying an OMEN) So we're doing mainly PvE, but considering PvP as a possibility too. I've seen pretty good aspects of both ships- this is what I've come up with so far:
CARACAL -Bigger cargo hold -LOADS of missile hardpoints -Faster than the MOA -Cheaper than the MOA
MOA -More turret hardpoints -More hardpoints overall -More CPU/Power -Tougher overall -More expensive -Needs an additional rank than the Caracal
Besides that I want the ship to look good too lol I've heard from different people that EITHER ship makes a good sniping ship- the Caracal has marginally bigger targeting range, but I don't think it makes too much different. So does it come down to missiles vs turrets? I've noticed that shields and armour has their own respective weaknesses (EMP/Explosive) there's more of a discernable change in missiles (like the sabretooth vs the piranha) but not so much with hybrid charges. (I'm using hybrid because of all the stat buffs and bonuses).
Please could I have your opinions?

they both shield tank, so it comes down to: which is better, your turret or your missile skills?

Caracal is much better for ratting. Better tank, better damage output and better range with missiles. And looks better than the Moa.. even though cara is no beauty either. :)
Always pick a missile spammer for pve if you want the easy route.

Caracal is a great ship if u have great missile skills, Moa is a great ship if u have great turret skills.
Moa gets the shield resist bonus so a pretty decent tanker too but at longer ranges doesnt hit too hard. Caracal is good at hittign hard at all ranges but is a bit flimsy on defense front.
it really just goes on ur missile or turret skills.

What makes missiles good for PvE and turrets better for PvP? What's the combat differences between PVE AND PVP, besides the obvious who you're attacking?

With turrets, you can go close range in pvp and get alot higher damage outout than with missiles. Missiles hit for the same damage no matter the range, but its lower than turrets. Unless you have t2 torpedoes, those are simply stupid.

Caracal. Moa is too skill intensive to fly IMHO. I couldnt fly a Moa well until I many engineering skills to level 4. A very hard to fit ship for a cruiser. --------- In the blindness, a streak fiery thread violently cuts the horizon. Bleeding golden mists, engulfing the blindness from within. Burning the darkness. The touch of dawn. |

They don't use energy, so you can have a much stronger tank.

Aha! Thank you, I hadn't thought about that! :D I think I'm just about made up on the Caracal now- but there's something I don't understand about it's hardpoints...
5 Hislots: 5 launcher hardpoints, 2 turret hardpoints..? Does this mean that two of them can be used for either weapon? If so, what loadout would you guys recommend for the missile boat?
Missiles I currently use are Sabretooths as shieldbusters and Piranhas as armour killers. Sometimes flamebursts and blooclaws for balance... any pointers?

Yes, the hardpoint description does mean that 2 of its hardpoints can be used for either.
As for which launchers, it depends on what you are trying to kill. For killing frigates, assault launchers.
As for which missiles, I would recommend kinetic missiles (bloodclaws or scourge) on the Caracal because the Caracal has specific damage bonuses to kinetic missiles; this outweighs the possibly better efficiency of specific missiles, such as EM for shields/explosive for armour, especially if you have a good level of cruiser skill.
I can't advise you on the Moa; I have never flown one - but in general, for ratting use missiles, they are the easy mode of NPCing.
Also for ratting, you may find it a good idea to put a small tractor in one of the highslots; it makes looting MUCH easier.

The main point that makes a Caracal better for PvE is the fact that you can fit like two Large Shield Extenders in addition to its 5 weapons... and a Moa needs PDUs to even fit a single Medium. Provided you take 200mm rails, that is. If you take 250mm's you need several PDUs to even fit 4 weapons...
In effect: a Caracal hull has less shields than a Moa hull, but a fitted Caracal has significantly more shields than a fitted Moa.

Dunno how far a caracal can reach, but I set up a tech I and low end moa today that reached out to 100km....get tech II rails on it with spike, plus tech II tracking comps, and it is a nice little sniper boat.

Like it's been said, it depends on your skills.
The Moa's a good ship, but it does take a lot of skills to even fit it, much less fly it. I'm learning that the more skills I get and the higher I take them, the more I like it. I got AWU 4 this weekend and I'm finally able to get everything I want on it.
I try not to use 250mm Rails on anything simply because they take so much PG. Plus, you really only want to use them for camping anyway. Try to stick with 200mm Rails. They have good tracking, decent damage, good range and they fit easily. 200s are a pretty versatile gun. You can hunt with them or camp with them. But I wouldn't do much without some tackler support.
If you can T2 your Moa out (T2 Rails, Launchers, Mag Stabs, Shields, etc...) you'll have a great ship. I can fit everything I want on my Moa with just a single T1 PDS, but then again, I have great fitting skills.
