if your ship uses gravimetric sensors, why would you use multi spectrum eccm?
trying to figure out why though someone would use multi-spectral eccm, if their ship only uses one type of sensors.

No reason at all. ECCMs and Omni sensor backups are strictly worse than the racial specific ones, assuming you have each available.
They're a legacy item from before ECMs changed to chance based.

Back-up arrays and ECCMs used to work with a point system like with ship sensor strenghts and ECMs. So if you used a multispec ECCM it would add sensor strength to all four sensors, just not as much as a racial one.

If I fly a caldari ship and fit a RADAR ECCM mod them someone jams me with 5 bajillion points of grav ECM will I still be able to use the RADAR and get a lock?

I think so, but they'll be using multispecs anyway so it doesn't matter.

I believe the way it works is that the defending ships highest sensor strength is the one used in the ecm calculations, so if someone uses a gravimetric jammer vs a ship with radar it would use the gravimetric jammers 2 points of strength vs radar instead of the 6 points of strength vs gravimetric. (resulting in 2/3 lower chance to jam) . ----- Apologies for any rambling that may have just occurred.

That doesn't make sense to me. A ship only has one type of sensors. If you fit a sensor backup of a different type to your ship's senors then it give you no benefit. So fitting radar ECCM on a caldari ship is useless. You can't be radar jammed anyway cos you dont have radar sensors so you dont need the backup at all.

ECCM used to add another sensor block to your ship(+2.3 to @@@@ Sensor strength). Now it adds a percent of your current strength. Since your ship has 1 sensor value over 0, 60% of zero is still zero, so omni backups no longer work as intended and just suck.
So the answer to the question is, no there is NO reason to fit an omni backup unless you dont have a proper racial backups.
