Just a quick thought that popped into my head which I'll throw at you with not more than 2 mins thought on it... Player Insurance Brokers... Any feasable way it could work, and if yes, how?

I have thought about this and discussed with my friends. The general conclusion we came to is that it would not be feasible. Put it this way, would you insure a car if you knew at somepoint it would be broken into and everything would be stolen from it? Sure you would. Thats what insurance in EVE is. The only time I buy insurance is when I think I might get popped in a T1 ship. There's no other reason to really get it, its not required by law like it is in the States to drive and its not like you might accidentally get into a fender bender. Sure, you might 'accidentally' pop a hauler coming out of jita 4x4 but you insure for that right.
It is not feasible, whoever ran it would lose millions of isk (just like the NPC insurance 'corp' does) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Win a Cynabal for 10ml!!! |

well I think the trick to making this work would be making it a weekly or even daily payment to your insurance broker. That way the insurance broker will be betting on the fact that you wont lose your ship for say three weeks while his payments pay off the worth of his ship. This way insurance brokers could pay you the same amount of money at a much lower premium. Lets say you pay 5m isk a day for activatity in a bs. After 20 days you have already payed off your ship and every 5m payment you make over that amount will be the insurance brokers' profit. Now this way insurance brokers can creat loopholes like "you missed a payment on such and such date" and you default on your plan. Also, an insurance broker can pick and choose who he insures. For example, im not seeing someone insuraing a ship whose owner is currently at war, or one who is constantly making trips into 0.0 space. Also, just like insurance companies today, a small investigation into the deaths of client ships would limit fraud. Requiring the party at loss to send the kill mail to make sure that the ship was not lost to concord or a close friend for example. Its definately an interesting idea i think if you have a mass amount of clients. You might be paying a lot of money out but with the right amount of people paying you 5m a day you would probably make more money then you pay out. Unless something like a titan super weapon killed 25 of your clients simultaneously....remind anyone of katrina? lol

I don't like insurance as it is that's for sure.
But I have good news, I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching from Geico to Progressive. |

Lol. Just skip straight to Safe Auto. =P It's all just a bloody legalized protection racket anyways, that is amazlingly unregulated and highly discrimitory. Alas unlike insurance lobbysts I can't afford to pad politicans pockets so no one listens to me.
Anyways about the op, that's how insurance works basically. Large numbers of clients so that even with having to pay out multiple claims a month they still bring in large amounts of profit. It would be doable, but the tracking of clients/claims and investigating to make sure you aren't being exploited by claim scammers could be very time consuming.

Insurance i think will be possible with the new contracts system. Perhaps CCP might change the default insurance to be really dodgy, to encourage player run insurance firms to rise up. These could include things like "reckless pilot" ratings that make your premiums higher, but instead of the current system per ship, it would be per pilot, and you would get ratings and pay a monthly/weekly fee on all the ships you want to insure. (much fairer i think).
What do ya'll reckon? |

I don't want everyone to see how many ships I lose... Anyway in the current system, its impossible, but I suppose we could hope for something more with the new system.

Edited by: Celeste Storm on 17/08/2006 12:35:30 I would like to see a change in the current insurance system. Maybe something like it is in RL. After a few insurance periods u can insure ur ship for less the normal prize. Let assume u start with 100%, after each period u drop by -15% to a minimum of 35%. ofc if u loose a ship (any of your ships) in a certain period u will not get a reduction. And after loosing another ship in the same period u will get a +5% penalty up to the maximum of 100%.
I hope I was not to confusing.

A no-claims bonus on any ship that survives it's prior insurance period would be a nice bonus to the current system :)
I'm not sure how you'd get player insurance brokers to work though... there would certainly be horrible opportunities for people to get ripped off, either by 'fly-by-night' insurance scams or just simply insurers going bankrupt. You would probably find that (just like in real life) the insurers would attempt every trick in the book to weasel out of paying and quite frankly I don't want to have to read and virtually sign pages of pseudo-legalese cr@p that means I need to employ an in-game lawyer to check for loopholes.
Underwriting insurance could be interesting too... you might suddenly find that popping a guy's ship ended up costing you money because you'd underwritten his ship insurer's losses :-P

Doesnt anyone read the dev blog here? They cant and wont change insurance it would screw way too many things and also you have to be insane to try and make insurance pay in this game. Look at it this way most ships dont survive for longer than 3months so for it to be profitable you would have to insure a lot of carebears and miners then insure they dont blow up, it would end up becoming a protection service almost, you would have to fight to save your investment. Maybe bob could run insurance say within their soveriegnty because of their sheer size and power but i doubt they could actually pull it off. to make a profit or break even a real insurance company in eve would need to offer the best insurace [100%] at about 95% of the cost of the ship!

Probably not. If they would, they'd notice that current insurance operates at a loss. It's so big that it's one of the big ISK faucets. Try to compete with that ...

I was just kidding
Anyway, it's fairly obvious the current insurance runs at a massive loss...
