Before you correct me, it is not a typo . I have been reading through the forums as off and on as I can. "I miss you guys!" - for anyone that cares. Back to the point at hand...
1. You have many many options on what you would like to do end game. Some examples for the uninformed. Mining, R&D, exploration, level 4-5 "aka carebearing", small scale pvp "gate camping / roams", large scale pvp "you got my space brah", Pi, Industry "those people who make your ships that you never hear about", freighter jocky, scouting, running a corp/alliance, scamming "I will give you back 2x what ever you give me!", and of course trading. Only a few examples.
2. EVE or rather new eden is a sandbox. This means that it has a system in place where one players actions effect another players experience. Please refer to the other examples on how vast our little sandbox really is.
3. EVE has a rather unique community. From the forums to local, there is enough love and hate to fuel a wonderful social situation. I know quite a few people who simply play to chat with their friends. "This is usually accompanied by some monotonous task" Not to mention the debates that can be quite easily started from a sentence or two on the forums.
4. There are many features in the game that are in and of themselves productive at keeping a player base. Collecting skill points, working toward year long goals, building an empire of dirt "see Chribba", or working toward your endgame.
5. EVE is fun, or can be... should be, depends on what you like?
TL;DR EVE-O offers a playing experience that other MMO's simply cannot.
P.S. I thoroughly enjoy "EVE is dieing" so please don't stop saying this even if you agree with me . "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" Heroic Era

Like a few novice capsuleers before me, I logged into EVE for the first time to be introduced to career agents. I worked through the various tracks, enjoying a little bit here, a little bit there but all too soon I had worked my way through them. Only to be left with this hangnail of a question ... "What now?"
I felt lost, alone and there wasn't a freaking yellow exclamation mark in sight anywhere. And then I realised. What now? Whatever I wanted. So I took a bit from that career agent, a bit from another and a bit from another and somehow managed to find a number of things to go do in EVE. Some badly. Others even worse.
But it doesn't matter, because when I found out I could do whatever I wanted; I loved EVE and what it represents.
And funny as it sounds, I currently enjoy running Courier contracts. Could you imagine a more boring way to spend your time in EVE? I mean, you're searching for a contract. You pick one that pays reasonable ISK for the money and will give you at least some type of return profit. And then what? You sit with your feet on the desk, a tasty beverage close by and a book and Warp to 0, scan local and your surrounds and deliver the cargo.
Terribly boring, isn't it? But I enjoy it. And it makes me feel as if I'm part of this sandbox. There was no quest giver out there. That was another player, who wanted some cargo shifted. I flew it for him. I helped that pilot out. And got paid for it.
Next step?
Courier Contracts for very lowsec. Need to learn how to fit something so I don't get blown to space dust when I'm hauling some PvP'ers cargo around.
Edit: P.S. If you need cargo shifted, I'm currently based in Lonetrek. I'm not up to Freighters yet, but I'll work for a reasonable rate. |

Newbies when they are so cuddly and naive are just so cute. Pity that they grow up to be bitter-vets. Ideas and stuff EVE - the game of sand castles, either building them or kicking them down. |

I think this is where alot of trial players/new players are lost. The few RL friends I thought would be interested in EVE fell at this stumbling block, so I'm sure many of the "Saw the advert on youtube, downloaded for free" players are doing that too, CCP should have a look at this.

Actually, the biggest stumbling blocks that the majority of trial users were experiencing (at least according to CCP and from what I have seen in the forums for the past few years) were the learning skills (problem #1) with the "I don't know what to do" moments following in a close second place (problem #2). For those of you who just got started, we trial players use to have to train up learning skills just to get started on training up any meaningful skills at all. This became a problem when trial users only had 14 days to try Eve and all they could train to speed things up were learning skills. So, CCP took that away, reimbursed players who trained learning skills, and viola... problem #1 solved.
Problem #2: This is where the agents were revamped because searching for the right agents was too complex for trial users who trying to find the right kind of agent that they wanted. There were even career-specific agents that (for some odd reason) kept handing out mission types that didn't even fit well with their career type. How many capsuleers here ever had a security agent make them do a stupid courier mission that had them fly across several systems just to deliver a few bottles of spiced wine? |

If you are playing EVE in a balanced way, those tutorial missions take a couple of days and you start meeting people. You can get to using cruisers and frigates, plenty of skills to train towards having a full account.
I think the biggest problem is not that people need more hand holding. I think the biggest problem is that games and gamers have changed over the years. When I started gaming it was with board games and old DOS ones. No guides, you just have to figure things out. Now they are spoon fed far too much. It goes beyond the games though, whole lives are mapped out from subject choices to careers. Forty five percent of first year university students drop out because they don't know what they are doing or are doing the wrong thing. Sure there are a lot of kids in the game and on this forum. How many of you are doing some subject because you were good at it and just carried on doing it in university but have no clue what job you will do with it? How many picked something because of the money but are finding they are hating it?
I don't see any easy fixes for any of it. Ideas and stuff EVE - the game of sand castles, either building them or kicking them down. |

I've sat on the edge of nullsec / lowsec and watched jump freighters come thru - they are very fast and we think we have figured out a way to get one but ...but we will need coordination , practice and luck.
If thats what you want to do jump freighters looked good to me. |

I don't see any easy fixes for any of it. You have a point here. I know a few "gamers" who won't even play something without the game guide in their hands.
So many people now rely on someone else to guide them through every step of a game, and EVE just doesn't work like that. |

It has changed significantly. I started out on a VIC20 and the whole ethos of games changed. Remember titles like Ghosts n Goblins? If you weren't perfect, you ran around naked. You got what, 2 chances then it was back to the beginning of the level. And we played that for *hours* even though it was punishing, even though the joysticks went flying a few times.
But why do you see that as a problem? I mean, why should games hold hands?
@Sebero Sinak, thank you for the tip. I think I might be a ways off from training one of those though. Blockade runners maybe? |
