Does anyone know when this skill will be available. I'd like to start my life of smuggling but I need this very imporatnat skill to make it worthwhile.

You can have that skill by following the path : second "school" Business Market Fundamentals Underhand Trade Practice, and as far as I know it's the only way of having it ...
By the way, I made an alt just to see if it works, and it seems to be currently broken/not working ...

So in order to get this skill i have to have it at chracter creation? There are no skill books I can purchase to get this, I suppose. Hmm, what do I do now, I guess I need to erase my main character. Can I transfer all my isk and stuff to one of my alts (after I create one)?

It's been said that the skill does not do anything, but when it does do something it will be seeded.
I cannot provide a link or someone to attribute that to.

Depends on what the contraband is.
Some items are contraband only in certain space (slaves for example). Other items are classed only as contraband so you can't sell it in their space (Republic Fleet Dog Tags in Minmatar space).
It's certainly possible to make a living off smuggling contraband now, just don't expect it to be easy. Black Market Trading only decreases the chance of being caught by customs - even at level 5, you can still be caught.
There are various ways of evading customs - there's a smuggling guide in the Cirme and Punishment forum.
That said though, expect smuggling to become a lot more profitable when boosters and DNA mutators are seeded.

Necro-ing is bad.
No update, but CCP are interested in keeping the mini profession in, even though they currently don't have time to implement it.
