Also, will more configurable graphics be part of the update? At the moment, there are not many choices in Eve's graphics to tailor it to your machine and performance targets. Particularly with all the new shiny ****zle, will this be included?
Also, make the turrts and effects disabling a permanent option on the escape menu

If a "Top 5" list of things EVE is known for were to be created, I think EVE's graphics would be in that list and probably close to the top. Not content to rest on our laurels, the Graphics team is working hard to push the envelope even further.
So, remembering the last Blog from Redundancy with that awesome Caracal render, you're either eagerly looking for the link to the new blog or already on your way over to the blog page. No link yet. Redundancy's blog has a lot more information about the behind the scenes graphics process, shading and not one, but two images. Can you say Bloom and Bellicose? I knew you could.
Ok, here's the link for those that have been patient enough to read this far (and not try to slip a "First!" post in). Summer Greys.

Edited by: HippoKing on 28/06/2006 16:30:45 Actually, I was adding files to winamp's library, and for some reason, when I typed my reply (very quickly) it seemed my keyboard wouldn't type. I couldn't type anything at all until the media library update thing had finished.
I didn't realise nothing was appearing until I had clicked the "post" button

I really, really want to know when we can expect the DX 9 graphics update. Will it be part of Kali 1? Please answer.
Also, as am sure you know, the entire sound system in Eve could use some work. I dont know if its issues with creative drivers, but there seems to be lots of people getting extreme lag when sound is enabled....

Looks sex0r... (I need a new graphics card)
On another gfxs issue; system backgrounds, are they going to be rendered like in tuxs post on scaning all the time? It would be sweet to see the background actually relate to your location in the star cluster.

Is RealX is working on the sound - or on the sound engine?
I remember a couple of times where sounds caused computer crashes under the current sound engine. And the sound engine isn't known for using the system resources carefully.
Bellicose: Looks oookaaaay. Still lacks in all but in the silly flapping T2 chin winglets department.
Sommer in Iceland is rumored to be pretty nice, and with more than the 10ŚC my Reykjavik weather report site mentions. Good luck with the weather! --*=*=*--

Thats another thing... the nebulas and so forth are cool and all, but not particularly realistic. I've jumped from systems very close to each other, and they have completely different backgrounds. Try jumping from Z30S-A to YZ-LQL in Fountain, the systems aren't that far apart and Z30 (as I recall) is black/light green and YZ-LQL is blood red. It'd be cool if you decided "ok, we're in a nebula, heres what this looks like from these angles" and then modelled each system's background to look like that. This is of course far far easier said than done. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

I will nuke CCP from orbit if that heavy bloom gets in to the game. It's just way too cheap trick to sell something to masses by adding some pseudo-coolness to the graphical side of the game distracting the potential new player away from the actual game. ________________________________________________ My signature exploded :/ |

That's the point of ambient occlusion renders. If there's specularity, they look plastic, if not, they look like clay. ________________________________________________ My signature exploded :/ |

YOU KNOW, these high polygon models are VERY representitve of what they use in Movies.
Plus for those that think that they will have these nice bloom effects and shiny plastic^^ ships to fly any time soon. You have to remind yourself that these graphics have been due for deployment with DX 10, which is due for deployment on Vista, which is due for deployment LATE NEXT YEAR.

"Microsoft has stated the scheduled release dates for Windows Vista are currently November 2006 for business editions, and January 2007 for consumer editions." (source is Wikipedia)
January 2007 isn't in my opinion that "late next year" as you may want to believe. ________________________________________________ My signature exploded :/ |

Actually,no..
All these effects are possible in DX9 too...Every single one of them.
I've actually read the tech papers that relate to DX10,and the vast majority of the improvements are related to software overhead reduction for the most part, thru changes in the DX10 API amd the new driver model in vista...
Actual changes in a GPU's architecture basically come down to adding a geometry shader engine between the existing vertex and pixel shader ones, wich can be used for things like displacement mapping without needing pre sampling, and adding more flexibility within the hardware to re-use data as often as feasable, wich reduces the number of API calls one needs to make...
They've also increased the number of render targets to 8 i believe and also added a couple more formats for HDR that tries to acheive the quality of HDR using FP16,but without it's huge performance hit..

I've already siggy'd the Bellicose model. a little sepia tone goes a long way towards making it not so plasic looking.
The new models are teh shiney, every single one! \o/ --

What the hell is wrong with some nice graphics? It's not distracting at all, having a ****ty looking half-finished Apoc model does worse things for immersion than having a bloom effect.
Oh, and why the HELL is that Abaddon GREY?!?! It better not be a freakin' Khanid ship.

I've been looking for a reason to save up and upgrade for vista. I have now found it...
Should this be vista only graphics.
And the bloom is way awsome.
