I have started using a Marketing agent under the assumption and from reading it was like 95% Courier and 5% kill. Unfortunately, I keep getting sent on 5 stage kill missions which are taking multiple hours to complete.
Is the normal, or something unusual?

It's normal. Every agent is capable of handing out combat missions. It's just that some of them like Marketing shouldn't do it all that often. -- (Battle hardened miner)

The ratings are based on a forum poll about two years ago. The number of participants has been pretty low. Half the missions didn't exist. Especially those faction mission storylines haven't been implemented and thus could not be taken into account. --*=*=*--

Once again people make statements and have no proof or back it up.
What ive found (in my personal opinion) is that agents give out missions almost like thier personality (they Like Fighting missions or Dont). Ive found that when I deal with the same agent they will follow a trend. So regardless if they are supposed to do something , keep trying agents until you get a "good" one. I found a level 2 agent that pays out better than All other level 2 agents (of the same or Better quality). Its a "marketing" agent and Ive Never got a combat mission. So Much for "Random" Thats the first thing people blame everything on and in my years of experiance (12 years Playtesting games {arcade} for CapCom) that Nothing truelly "Random" (especially when a program is involved). If you dont like how the agent treats you , Find Another One!

Thanks for bringing this out. I got 5 killing missions out from 10 missions I have received from a "Marketing" agent. Massive Attack, Silent the Informant, Retribution, etc. Think they have changed the ratio to 50% courier and 50% killing, still need more mission runners to prove it.

Hypothesis: if you accept a mission of a type, your agent is more likely to give you another mission of the same type. I have 3 administration agents in the same corp. If I accept a combat mission, there is roughly 75% chance of next mission being of same type, no matter wether it is combat or courier. If I reject a mission, it seems to be 50/50 what type I get next. This behaviour is the same for all three agents.
I get the odd trading mission as well, but they usually dont repeat, so repeat chance is prolly just an increase of base chance.

You know, I have the same feeling, but could never prove it.
I have an L4 Command agent that either gave me pirate or racial kill missions. Initially, the agent would give me as many pirate as racial missions (vs Amarr and Caldari).
Since I'm taking care not to lower my Amarr and Caldari standings too much, I refuse those missions.
Guess what? I haven't had a single racial kill mission offered in weeks, they are all pirate kill missions now. Strange...
EDIT: Perhaps in my case it's related to standings. Since my pirate standings are awful, and get worse every time I do pirate kill missions, I get a better chance of getting those missions?

I couldn't agree more. I had a marketing agent that I finally just got fed up with and left because all I was getting was combat missions. 95% Courier is totally wrong.
On the plus side though, it motivated me to expand into doing missions in low sec, since I had to find a different agent.

I agree...much closer to 50% kill/courier.

The fact that the ratios have never been proven is why we don't link them in the sticky thread. Or at least I don't think we do. It tends to be misleading, as you've found here.
From what I can tell, it doesn't work on a fixed percentage of missions being kill or courier or trade, it works on a chance that you will get a kill or courier or trade mission, and is weighted appropriately
