It's been a long time since I used the courier mission service, and I was wondering if pilots are still fullfilling them. I imagine given the volume limitation at 20km3 that it's pretty much a beginners activity, if it's still not possible to put escrow packages into a freighter.
1) Anyone had experience in these actually being filled, or doing them? 2) What's your experience on the typical isk/m3/jump that someone will take them? 3) What typical reward vs. collateral that someone will take them?

Hi,
I set a few currier missions, some people I know are fanatical about using them. They have a niche. Typically I use them when items are somewhere less than savoury, or I'm feeling lazy and can't be bothered to trek out of the way to collect something or other.
People will take anything reasonable with regards to isk/jumps. This is scaleable, i.e. a newer player will take a cheaper payout mission whereas the tougher higher paid ones (approx 20mil deposit) also get taken. I pay between 5% and 20% to couriers, with a bonus if the job gets done fast.
A problem with the system is that all the good missions get taken quickly and all the rubbish ones are left for the new people to look at once and think "ooh what a rubbish system".
In summary: yes, they are useful things to set and do get taken, pay couriers fairly (low risk low isk, high risk or long jumps then be a little more generous).
Cheers,
Jade

This is for small cargo missions, about 100 m3 max, I have no recent experience with high volume missions.
1) All my courier missions are claimed and delivered within hours, even the ones in lowsec (I am operating in trade hub regions). You will only have problems with 100M+ collateral missions, it sometimes takes longer to find courier (depends on reward tho).
2) 3) My usual reward is 200-400k for <20M coll, 400-800k for 20-80M coll and about 1% from collateral above 80M. This is for missions in highsec and <10 jumps long. If there is lowsec or mission is longer, I raise reward by 30-50% (it really depends on how much you can pay tho). Missions over 150M usually needs more than 1%, becouse players with that cash are not going to fly around for few millions. Its better to split your delivery to 100M max missions.

Thanks for the replies. Definitely sounds worth using the feature again.

Whenever I use them, I usually make something like a million or so for even a few jumps and a low volume because I want something done quick, and if I'm courier, honestly, I don't want to transport 300m3 for 50k ISK.
I can just go pop battleships for money rather than waste my time on courier runs. So maybe my ideas of profit are skewered.
Collateral is judged on how much the item is worth plus a little more.

From the other side, I take a lot of high-sec courier missions in trade hub areas. I almost always stick to safe space. Now I am farily new (4 months old) and so I only fly courier packages that are 10km3 and under. But I find that I will take most missions valued at over 100k, and even less than that if there are multiple courier missions to the same or nearby destination that I can combine.
For me it is a niche. I like to think of myself as someone who keeps the PC economy moving. And I can listen to a baseball game on the radio while I fly around for a few hours.
Just my .02 isk.

I regulary look at the courier mission board to see whats up. If there are missions with 20mil+ reward, regardless of sec status, collateral and stuff, I'll do it. Its nice for a change to do some courier missions now and then. But as I said, for me all missions with less than 20mil reward are not worth the hassle...

It's really cool to hear from actual couriers here. Are there any more of you, young or old, who could give their opinion?

I'm on both sides of the courier mission workflow. I create them on a regular basis and accept them when I don't have to go to far out of the way. Also, if the collateral is ridiculus, than it will be ignored.
On average, my missions get delivered if the reward is in the ballpark of 10k per jump and smaller than 7k m3. The reward goes up if I was faster delivery or if there is any low sec involved. I try to keep the collateral below 10m whenever possible.

I find courier missions useful when hauling tons of stuff for corpmates.
They would be much more useful if you could put them in a freighter though.

Edited by: Callan Skiderlar on 23/06/2006 17:14:14 I think the biggest thing holding back courier missions is the huge discrepancy between collateral amount and market value for the transportation. As people have said, if you have 100M for the collateral, you're not going to bother with a 50k mission.
What I think would be a good modification to the system would be if the couriered items were packaged in a mission package locked to the issuer. You would still want collateral so that the transporter is motivated to complete the mission, but you would not have to fully cover the value of the items, because they cannot get at them and thus do not value the contents. That would dramatically lower collateral requirements and make freighter missions (assuming they finally raise the max) more likely.
Once we digested that change, you could open up some fun where folks with hacking skills could try to ***** the package. Reputable hauling firms, then, might have courier missions restricted to their corp and be able to charge premiums. Disreputable haulers might break open 100,000 m3 contracts expecting a juicy haul of mods for their 100M deposit, only to find a pile of Veldspar ... ---

maybe if you could insure your package that you wanted couriered, like you can insure ships. the courier fee could be the cost of the insurance. I set these missions up all the time btw.

I hope this does not come across as a whine
I have started my trading career recently and thought hey cool I can do some courier work too. I have been checking the courier screen regulary trying to find routes matching my own, like ya do. I am really disapointed with it. Nearly all the missions take you to low sec or originate from low sec. This would be fine if the reward was worth it. All, and I mean all, seem to offer really pityfull amounts. I could crab a cheap frig and kill belt rats in 0.8 for 2 hours and sell the ship when I am done and make more money. The amounts people ask for the collateral as well is astonishing. For a low sec run where I am risking my ship, my pod,my ISK (collateral) and your cargo, I want a really good return. Not just 50k per jump. I will look in now and then just to see if there is anything worthwhile but I wont be running any missions if the few examples I have seen in the last three months are anything to go by.
I am sorry if its a whine.

My favorite courier mission ever was a 700 million collateral payment to take 14,000 m3 68 jumps to an ASCN station in the very very southeast corner of 0.0. Payment? 2 million ISK.
What the hell is the point of that? I could understand (if not condone) a newbie-catching scam mission, but no newbie is going to be able to afford ridiculous collateral like that. People with enough money would also have enough sense to ignore it.
