Edited by: Halbeth on 08/05/2006 14:11:36 The player Tla Reluah attempted to scam me out of 20 million ISK posing as an alt of my corp leader, read the following chat log below: [ 2006.05.07 20:28:41 ] Halbeth > After the firetail? [ 2006.05.07 20:30:30 ] Halbeth > well, I found this firetail on escrow, Jasu said it was a good deal, serb leant me the money, which I'll pay back soon as I made the profit [ 2006.05.07 20:30:32 ] Halbeth > no thanks [ 2006.05.07 20:31:03 ] Halbeth > well... I did just lose a maller... [ 2006.05.07 20:32:55 ] tla reluah > 20 mil would be great [ 2006.05.07 20:33:00 ] Halbeth > (*offense) [ 2006.05.07 20:33:52 ] tla reluah > Moselgi ((note, members of the corp can check on our forums for stuff like that, this idiot just posted the name of our HQ system, which is a 0.7 :P)) [ 2006.05.07 20:34:35 ] Halbeth > nope, it's on death mails, moselgi is a 0.7, I'm sorry if it is you buzz, for one thing I don't have 20 mill, :P but you get no money till you log in on buzz and tell me it's safe, if you are buzz I'm sure you understand
After which the player left the conversation. I contacted me C.E.O who told me he had no alts, so I was right im my suspicions. I've never seen a scam like this before so I want to advise you all, make sure you know who you're talking to! Also, while you're at it, pod Tla Reluah, he deserves it

The char will probably be deleted tonight and a new one created to go at it again. The BLOCK function by account would be nice.

Alas, it's true, but at least it'll warn people to confirm the player who's asking them for cash is who they say they are.

Standard procedure when this happens is to tell the alt "ok, I just transferred the money to Cmdr BuzzBuxton. Log him on and pass it on to your alt, that way I don't risk getting scammed."
If it's actually him, he'll log on his main and then curse you because he doesn't have the money; if it's not, no harm done. ________________________________________________

It was a pretty cunning scam too. "Dock two times at the Brutor Tribe Bureau and then self destruct your ship. It's a new cheat. Once you've done that a battlecruiser will spawn for you, fully fitted."
Man, I'm glad Bossu tried it first, or I would have lost my Raven for nothing!

NO, he's petitioned Foobie for it, despite:
1. he never paid foobie for the 'good tip' 2. he tried to cheat and got caught short!!!

Name calling on the forum is as bad as that scam attempt.
Those scams are way older than EVE. Sadly they work IRL too more often than not as people forget to use Brain 1.0 before doing anything. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. They got Ray |

Doesn't change the fact that he is a scammer. He scammmed, he griefed and he got away with it. Way to go, I should start scamming too!

you can't impersonate moderators/gms/CCP. Everyone else is free reign.
Added below are the rules I've found which can aply to the situation or which aplies to similar situations regarding player identities.
Originally by: Terms of Use # 6. Chat, Bulletin Boards, and other Submissions. <..> o V Submit any Content that encourages any illegal activities, or provides guidance or instructional activities about such illegal activities;
o VI Make any false representation, including impersonation of any person or entity or misrepresentation of your affiliation with any person or entity;
Note how Person or Entity can be interpreted in no other way than to include players, too.
Originally by: Chat Rules Impersonating another channel patron, volunteer, CCP or Siminn employee is strictly prohibited and may result in the permanent revocation of your channel access, temporary suspension or permanent banning of your account.
Note how a player is also a channel patron. This is a bit ambiguous, however, as to whether it also includes people who aren't currently in channel. If I recall correctly, a few months ago this particular chat rule also included other players specifically.
Originally by: Terms of Service You may not impersonate or present yourself to be a representative of CCP, Siminn or an EVE Online volunteer.
Here there is no mention of other players
Originally by: EULA No player may use the character name of another player to impersonate or falsely represent his or her identity.
This is with regards to character names, however, and not specifically about people lying about their identity. However, if someone creates a character that is very similar in name to your own, it is actually petitionable. Good bye Vader, V4dar, Vad3r, V4d3R, Vador, Vad0r, etc.
---
Bottom line is that it's not a pretty thing to do, trying to scam people by telling them they are someone else. It's not as much a part of the games inherent and allowed double-play as it is taking advantage of the games mechanics which allows one person to control several alts. As such, there is no protection for these activities in role playing, as there is in many other shady activities in game.
I'd petition anyone for impersonation as soon as I discovered them if someone tried it on me. It would be interesting to read if someone petition something like this and recieved an answer from a senior GM. Para-quote it to avoid breaking rules ;) New sig coming soonÖ Drone musing (MC-boards) |

I tried petitioning, and was told this sort of scam was allowed ( I didn't lose any money I just wanted justice meted) I can understand why corp thieves and the like are allowed in EVE but this is just silly. In a real world situation you wouldn't have a completely different person saying "Hi, I'm actually this guy, lend me some money". It's not the espionage and such like the acts of the Guiding Hand Social Club (which I love about this game) it's just pure grief tactics.

heh, same thing happened with us just yesterday. Some guy named Katsarugi i think. Corp member realized it was a scam but played along with him claiming that he'd loan him 35m isk as soon as the scammer repaid him for the (made up) 5m debt that the CEO had to him. Was so close to getting it out of him too. Ah well. Scammers are lower than pirates imo. (No offense to the wretched hive of scum and villany community out there)

People fall for this all the time.
Just last night there was a guy in the Help channel asking if he could petition the 75 million ISK he just gave away to someone claiming to be an alt of a corp member.
Be smart people. If they say they are somebody, test them. If they fail, deny them your money. The person whose alt they pretend to be will understand if it's really them. If not, you just saved yourself from losing money.
Be smart or be sorry. ---------------

This is not true, someone started evemailing customers of mine when i was CEO of Magma and we were producing freighters, he claimed to be my alt and asked for deposits on the freighters and carriers we were building. He was promptly banned for that. ___________________________________________________ ~Vistilantus
