At random times while having EVE and Spotify open (Spotify playing music), I find the computer to freeze at random times. The screen becomes unresponsive, the sound sounds like when you hold your fingers on the minijack (but much louder), and I do suspect that it's EVE that causes this, as this problem does not occour with Spotify and Diablo/Hearthstone/Steam games. It doesn't really matter what I do ingame, but I find to occour most often when entering warp, and just happened while being docked in a station (Sarum Prime to be exact). I can't exactly remember when this began to happen, but a few weeks back should do.
I really can't provide any kind of crash logs (I think), since I have to force shut own the computer each time. If I can find crashlogs anywhere, please do tell, so I can look them through and link them :)

Extra note: This doesn't seem to happen with EVE and iTunes, VLC or YouTube (Firefox).
Would be nice if anyone noticed anything similar while using Spotify |

Have you tried disabling audio completely in EVE? Not suggesting that as a solution, but it may help us work out what is going on (and may be a workaround for now).

Update: Seems to be happening with iTunes as well, but much less frequently, and the computer seems to take it much lighter than with Spotify (static sound is much less noicy). Had iTunes running and playing 5 hours along with EVE before the computer froze up (up from 0.5-2 hours with Spotify). Have yet to experience this with YouTube (Firefox, Flash) |

All I can suggest is to ensure that drivers are up to date for graphics and audio.

Make sure you are running the latest version of Spotify.
// Just noticed you are having problems with other applications, as CCP Snorlax stated there its probably a gfx/audio driver issue |

Just did a complete reinstall of Windows and all my programs (not because of this issue alone), and the issue still seems to occour. All my drivers are completely upto date, apart from the Graphics Driver, since my graphics card can't handle the newest version (the screen starts flickering), however that has not been an issue before (past 4 months). From the Event Viewer I have found errors about Windows being unable to handle some virtual drives, so for the moment, I'm going to try without having PowerISO running |

Update:
Did a complete reinstall of Windows (as mentioned above) due to this reason a few more (non-EVE related) Still seeing freezes with Spotify up and running. Graphics driver is currently nVidia GeForce 337.50 BETA driver. 335.23 (current release) is giving big issues with the computer and graphics driver (non-EVE related). Issue is also happening with the last stable driver (334.89).
Sound driver is as up-to-date as it can get, installed with the latest available BootCamp version (v4.01) for the MacBook model. Cirrus homepage is a mess for searching for drivers (Cirrus Logic CS4026A (AB31)).
All other drivers should be pretty much up-to-date due to the latest BootCamp driver install release (with the exception of nVidia drivers).
However, I did come across a freeze while tripple boxing (haven't been an issue before) with nothing else running in the background, except for MSE, Gyazo, Viber and BootCamp service. All 3 clients had sound enabled. It happened right after a gatejump, but having Spotify running still increases the chance of getting a freeze by dramatic amounts. |

So this is still happening, and EVE is really unplayable at the moment. I can not participate in anything that requires any kind of voice coms, or play with audio/music on, I've done it with music from my iPod playing on my speakers, but it doesn't really cut it. I participated in the NPTS today with the PvP Fleet, and we were using EVE Voice. I froze 2 times during event, one which cost me my pod (ship probably couldn't have been saved anyways).
It has also begun freezing randomly when I have Chrome open (switched from Firefox). |

Go to device manager and *disable* the sound device(s). Disable webcam too for good measure. Then do you still have problems?
You are running Windows on a Mac. There could have hardware/driver issues. Freezing computer has nothing to do with EVE - that stuff always happens at OS level (hardware drivers!)

This has only started to happen after one of the patches. It only happens with EVE, it wasn't an issue for a very long time where I could easily tripplebox with Music running. EVE is not suffering any problems if sound is not running (sound devices disabled or not).
Every other game runs just fine with sound going, including Diablo, Ghost Recon, Hearthstone and WoW.
EDIT: After Rubicon 1.4, the issue has become lesser though, freezes happens less frequently with Flash, Spotify and iTunes has only given 1 freeze so far. |

Now that the thread got bumped, I might as well give updates. This is no longer a sound issue (directly), but a CPU issue. The game mostly freezes when new, instant commands are given, like dock, overheat (that actually happened outside the Amarr station), combat (froze twice during a L4 mission), logging a new client on - or if long running CPU intense software is running, like Skype, Voice Comms (TS) and Flash Player, however having a browser only seems to be fine with the EVE client. The hardware is as up-to-date as it can get by Apples own software that is the "latest supported". I did manage to get an unofficial graphics driver that is a tad newer (still only 306.xx), and with that the situation is better, but still bad.
The previous "issue" with sound is of course just that with sound running, more CPU is used. However, it is still only EVE that pushes the CPU that hard, that it actually freezes.
And yes, I am currently looking for a replacement for this Crapbook. |

I recently returned to EVE, but have again mostly stopped playing because of this issue. Even with audio disabled within the client, freezing still occurs. Switching from DX11 to DX9 seems to eliminate the freezing, but then I get screen flickering. And, as the other posters have mentioned, EVE is the application in common to every freeze. Using my computer in the same way with other games, DX11 or DX9, gives me no problems.
My question is, within windows 8.1 I've got two audio device settings for exclusive mode: Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device, & Give exclusive mode applications priority
Both are enabled by default. Might disabling one or both be useful in troubleshooting this problem? What are the ramifications for turning these off for other applications? |
