I almost told one employee at work to "STFU n00b" when they were lying\being obnoxious.
It was sad :D

Unfortunately, my boss playing has had a negative impact on my career. He refuses to promote me or give me a payrise until I have achieved the following:
Internal Relations level 5 Telephone Manner Level 5 Advanced Telephone Manner level 3 Dealing with Global Heads level 4 Concentration level 5 Focus level 5
and Attendance level 5 which resets to level 1 after every sick day.....

Heh, i'll bear that in mind, could be joining the RAF myself in a couple of months.

Somehow I'm guessing "Sharks With Frickin' Laser Beams" would not be that convincing on a resume...

I have used it for this and other games, and acted as a rl refference for my members. Then again, I had people volunteering to write content, design, program admin and a ton of other duties which were outside the scope of the games we played, yet had very real experience and exposure.
eg. setting up and securing a linux box, using production-level dtp skills etc.
Yes people have recieved jobs via reference checking with me...many in feilds unrelated to gaming.
RL guilds, clans, corps, what have you, are just communities like everything else in life. The old boy network is in full-swing in the gaming world, esp as you rise to the competitive levels, the community tends to be very small, just like any sport or profession.
Regards, Athon

Thanks for all the responses so far and Congrats to those who used EVE corp experience on their resume.
I guess it all depends on who will be reading it. I imagine as time goes on and MMORPG's become more prevelent in the world conciousness, things like this are not beyond the realm of possibility. I also want to mention it is a testament to the Devs and the Community that CEO's out there log in and play, even if the "Play" is Administrative work.
Again, thanks for the input. I look forward to reading more.

I wonder how many people here have told a colleague that they are going 'afk for a sec', or said they are 'lagging' when someone mentions they look tired?
I've done both. ....more than once.

Haha not bad. The mercenary bit might raise some questions, though.

It all depends on the job.
If listing a fraternity executive position can hurt your chances, then I don't think trying to claim experience on a video game is going to fare better, probably much worse. If I were the interviewer, I would show my co-workers the resume, and everyone would have a good laugh. That is, if they were applying for my line of work.
So.. if this is for a career, I would NOT do it. If this is for getting a little spending cash, it might not hurt, but I still wouldn't do it.
If you just need something to take up space on a resume (we all do at first), try to get an internship, paid or not.
The managerial skills similar to RL are there, but are the interviewers/managers going to understand this?

You want questions. You've put your gaming career on your CV, so you must wanna talk about how it makes you a valuable employee.
I talk about gaming in interviews, because I play team games. HR people love hearing about it, actually, because they like the idea of team-building events generally. Even more so if you're actually managing a resource that others use, or are responsible for managing and motiviating others.
If you find the right words, it's your passport to getting the "team player" and "management potential" boxes ticked.
