They still put crap loads of sport on on a Saturday, regardless of whether Grandstand is on or not.
But yeah, for tradition's sake alone they should keep it as Grandstand, plus it also means I can just avoid BBC altogether whenever it says Grandstand is on because its always been a nightmare on a saturday if you hate the sports it showed. ---------------------------------------- Space-Slacker |

Sadly, the BBC's exclusive coverage of the world bowls championship, international extreme fishing, and Yorkshire under 16's tennis do not hold the same appeal as Premier League football or the Ashes on Sky.
Gary Lineker is a Tit, Claire Balding is blatantly a man, and Grandstand is a waste of space. It should be replaced on Saturday afternoons by an adult version of 'Why Don't You' or 'Tizwaz'.

It's past its sell-by date ... just *because* something is an institution is no reason to save it, any more than it's a particular reason to destroy it.
In this case, there's no good reason to save it. Most of the good sport the BBC carries isn't on a Saturday afternoon, and they get far more people watching in the evenings anyway. ________________________________________________

is everyone forgetting the rugby on Grandstand? And Wimbledon? World Snooker? And the occasional good footie match? I think Ron Burgandy would refer to Grandstand as "the balls"

All of those things will still be on the BBC - just not all crammed into one program on a Saturday afternoon. ________________________________________________

Edited by: Benedictus Setaro on 26/04/2006 15:42:46 Further to my post sbove, seeing as the only sports I watch are Martial Arts/Mixed Martial Arts, which get ABSOLUTELY BUGGER ALL coverage on any free-to-air channels, I couldn't give a monkeys really. I mean really its stupid: boxing, which in a vast majority of matches is as boring as watching paint dry nowadays, as both guys are either too lazy or too scared to hit each other, gets some good late night airtime on BBC/ITV, yet MMO gets nothing. I will give special mention to KO-TV thats on ultra late night on Channel 4, that shows some damn good boxing.
The only other thing I watch is Formula 1, and thats on ITV now anyway. ---------------------------------------- Space-Slacker |

Heh, classic.
Don't spose you have an opinion of Sue Barker, id love to hear it
Tbh granstand brings back unhappy childhood memories of enforced saturday lunches for me, generaly unhealthy rubbish i was forced to eat (just out of interest)
Anyway, it's soccer saturday on sky, thats where it's at these days. ______ Long ago one gorgeous night, we let the stars grow free. We let Zhuge do that once, he came back carrying a traffic cone, a forsale sign and three empty bottles of dutch lager. He also lost his Zimmer Frame... - Imaran

dont get me started on tennis tramp #1 She went out with Cliff Richard. No mere opinion of mine could ever hope to be as degrading as that.
edit: plus, Wots-her-face Sharipova would wipe the floor with her at tennis, and she's much better looking. Sue Barker's name suits her face.

That was on World of Sport, over on ITV.
World of Sport got axed must be getting on for twenty years ago now (God, that makes me feel old)...
Aah, World of Sport. The sport on it was always rubbish, but it was worth watching just for the opening titles with the planes, and ****ie Davies' hairdo.
The theme music was better than Grandstand, as well.
Edit: the censored bit is an abbreviation of Richard...

Actually Kendo Nagasaki had his mask removed at the Huddersfield Agricultural Exchange and it seemed a bit pointless to continue after that.

We do have adverts every ten minutes on the BBC. They're just adverts for other BBC programs, exclusively and not paid for. ________________________________________________

They dont count as adverts- they're advertising programmes on the BBC as opposed to 'Mr Muscle' and the rest of the rubbish you get on Sky and ITV. And 30seconds of an advert at the end of a programme advertising whats on later that night is much better than 10mins of rubbish.

Edited by: Calleb on 27/04/2006 12:35:47 I was a Grandstand fan - but to be honest its now just a relic of a bygone age of television.
When I was a nipper it would start off with a bit of football focus, then sport of the week (depending on what great sporting event was going on that week) up till 3pm when there would be a division 1 (remember when this was the top flight) footy match, followed by final score. 5 hours (ish) of top sporting entertainment.
It used to work realy well until all the footy went to satelite TV, and now its just sport fillers. I am sad to see it go, but it would take a sporting revolution to make it work these days. Football focus and final score can stand well enough on their own merits so we will still have these, but the poor quality of bbc sport available to them just does not bring in enough viewers.

Agreed to some extent, but I'd gladly sacrifice all those programmes if it meant that Noel's House Party could be banished from my memory.

Yeah, we pay $40/month+ and STILL get commercials every 10 minutes. Nothing like watching an "hour long program" and getting to watch 35 minutes of commercials.
It's ridiculous. You have to pay $80 a month in order to get the commercial free movie channels, and even those play the same movies over and over again.
Though, I must admit. Dr. Who is the dumbest television show I've seen since Monty Python's Flying Circus, but somehow I can't stop watching it. DAMN YOU, tricksy Brits!!!
