Edited by: Litus Arowar on 25/04/2006 19:34:44 Disclaimer: This is not a post meant to be a big revelation to people used to reading the forums... It is also not intended to help players with plenty of in-game experience... It is supposed to introduce brand new players to some very common acronyms and "nicknames" we all take for granted. Don't flame me, try to contribute
Since I only know what I use and what is common, I'm gonna start this off with those. If you kind folks could add to it it would be much appreciated... The hopes are that eventually there'll be enough here for it to get a sticky, so that questions like "what's a MAPC" could be avoided. Thanks for your help, and please, don't troll...

Dictionary link on the left... but its missing a fair bit of stuff and is kind of buried and out of date (for instance PoS doesn't mean "pod on sight" it means "player owned station). A few more: MFS - magnetic field stabilizer
MAR - medium armor repairer LAR - large "" "" (might as well throw them in since you have small)
some nicknames that are kind of vague nos - nosferatu neut - energy neutralizer

Yep... its 'pest, mistype.
I do stick by dommy. As when you say it over TS thats how it sounds as it should be spelled. ---

Edited by: Bedrock on 25/04/2006 21:31:40 This doesn't exactly require a sticky. Most of it is common enough, in all honesty. There's a dictionary somewhere around here, maybe ccp can just update it with the info on this thread.
Here you go:

like a previous poster said, that dictionary is rather out of date, and i think stickying this thread would be superior to having to explain to everyone what a mapc is
couple ones i didnt see on the list: ac - autocannon arti - artillery howi - howitzer OP - outpost (you included pos so why not)

after the amount of effort people put into PDU vs PDS discussions over the past few days I expected more of a turnout for this thread... I guess you'd all prefer to keep writing "MAPC = micro auxiliay power core" in every other frig fitting thread

This is a useful post although it would be more suited to the New players forum so they could check that before coming here and clogging up the forum with multiple posts aboutt the same thing

Sticky it somewhere!
We should have a missiles vs guns sticky as well. Although the forum might die then.

Dread: dreadnaught or dread gurista.
Many abbreviations such as MC are used to describe alliances as well, so learning the tags of the largest and most important alliances would be a good diea for newer players to avoid confusion.

It would be more useful to have an acronym lookup tool rather than a threaded discussion or even just a gigantic list. I don't have time to make one myself, but it is conceptually simple. You need a web page to store the acronyms in alphabetical order (for those who just want to browse the list) and a search window that displays spell-outs for acronym inputs. A bonus would the ability reverse the search--display an acronym for expressions that contain the search key.
I'd produce something like this myself, but I like to devote my free time to playing. Besides, I'm sure that there are better web tool developers out there than me.

this is a really good idea :)
and i particularly like that you've got PDU for power diagnostic system! :P the number of times I've had to tell a noob what to look for when i say, "fit a PDU" :D
-You've missed a few though :P
minerals: Trit -Tritanium Pyer -Pyrerite Mex -Mexallon Iso -Isogen Nox -Nocxium Zyd -Zydrine Mega -Megacyte (also megathron though) Morph -Morphite
Ships: Blasterthron - Blaster equiped mega (also railathron for rails) Blasterthax - Blaster equiped thorax
Moomin - Munnin
Bessie or Besi - Bestower Mamie or Mam - Mamoth
Terminology: "safe" - same as SS Podded - Pod killed (as in the capsule was destroyed)
I also personally use : "popped" for when a ship is destroyed...but I think thats from another game i used to play a bit of and I've transfered it.
Agro - Agression - means things are shooting at you. ie "I have agro from the spawn in the left"
spawn - NPC gathering/cluster of NPC ships. Also can be used if your mining and some NPC pirates appear.
respawn - ie the NPCs are back!
rats - pirates (usually used only for NPC's though)
Gank - your (or someones) ability to cause damage. "I'm fitted to gank" Usually tend to mean that they've ogt alot of stuff to hurt people but little defence. Also can be a verb "we/i got ganked" -means we got whooped.
Tank - your (or someones) ability to recieve damage. "whos going to tank this complex?" or "how good is your tank?"
Kite/Kiteing - get the agro from the NPCs and then run around so they dont hit you well. Kinda like tanking, but its more about speed/ transversal and less about pure damage absorbing ability.
I will save you, but make sure you bring beer - Wrangler and cAKe - Imaran I thought it was bREe, omgi'mgivingawaymodroomsecwetsftl - Cortes when come back ... bring PIE. Me like PIE. -Capsicum |

Day-um, in all my time in EVE, I've only just seen this thread, lol. Great idea and no doubt extremely useful to newer players.
I always used to chortle at the widespread use of 'Aye' and 'teh'. Although I feel that with 'teh' it was simply a typo' that stuck, alongside 'p'wned'. Again, maybe in it's earliest form a typo that should have read 'o'wned'. Given the location of the 'o' and the 'p' on the keyboard, this may carry some weight.
But the 'wtfbbqpwned' one always made me laugh. In as much as my GF's 'wtfbbqpwneddothedishes' didn't make me laugh.
Great idea mate, nice one.
