exactly how do they work? they dont seem to be too popular.
also, can someone post a hyperlink to a thread that describes exactly how to use a scanner so i can find them pesky people that create safe spots?

Edited by: LUGAL MOP''N''GLO on 19/04/2006 01:27:57 I use them. Alot of ships use them. They are great lil' buggers against rats. 5m3 in size means that you don't need a Gallente sized drone bay to hold quite a few of them.
I see them all the time, don't know why you think they are 'unpopular'. Once you train some skills though, scout drones may become obsolete in the shadow of better combat drones.
Edit: There is a good scanning tutorial around somewhere, they are really easy to use after you have read the article.

Ya, that's the one I read. Great tutorial.

To the OP: "Scout" drones are actually combat drones. "Light" and "Medium" drones are classified as "Scout". And "Heavy" drones are their own class.
I have no idea why this is classified this way. Also look at the Combat Drones skill, its for scout drones.

With reasonable to decent drone skills your light drones can keep you safe from all NPC's down to around .4 space(and certain selected PC's too hehe). 0.3 is do-able but if a BC rat spawns you will probably have to run, I cant quite seem make my retriever tank a BC yet lol.
But anyway drones are a lot more commonly used than people imagine.

Edited by: Cesisse on 19/04/2006 12:12:10 OK, here is a noob replying based on noob experience so far:
Drones have their own AI which is somewhat controlled by the interface in the overview. By this I mean a pilot can oreder them to engage locked targets, to return to the mother ship, or to orbit the mother ship. Historically, the Gallente developed them as the counter to the highly skilled fighter pilots of the Calderi navy during the war for Calderi prime. Without the drones the Gallente would likely have lost that war.
In general, they are like pets set on defensive for those familar with that analogy. What this means is that if they are in space, and in controllable range, they will attack anything that becomes flagged to you. This can be dangerous for miners when someone comes to steal from thei jet can, since they will attack the thief unless you recall them and tell them to orbit or to return to the bay. But its a nice feature if you are getting swarmed by fighters/frigates and can't lock new targets as fast as you might like. They can be quirky, but for those who follow the path of drones, they are worth it. Otherwise, they cannot attack a target unless you have it locked. Again, if your sensors are jammed, the drones will go after the jammer if they dont already have a target.
The default range for drone control is 20 KM. With the scout drone operation skill trained to 5, and a drone augmentor mod in a high slot, this can extend to 65 KM. Light drones are fast, but of course do low dps as well. Good for frigates etc. Medium drones are slower but do more damage.
There are some ships that give nice advantages to using drones. The Vexor cruiser as well as one of the Amarr cruisers (forget ehich one) give plus 10 percent damage and durability per cruiser level trained. Both ships have 75 m3 drone bays which means one can carry 5 medium (10 m3 each) and 5 light (5 m3) in the bay.
The higher your level of drone skill trained, the more drones you can control at a time, with a cap of 5 drones for normal ships. (The carrier can use an interface to increase the number of fighters, but that is hardly anything we noobs need to be concerned about). I found the breakthrough for killing larger rats was drone 4. Four medium drones can take down rat battle cruisers while you stay out of range and/or kill the support frigates. I have killed rat battleships with 4 medium drones in a Vexor. That drone damage and durability bonus is excellent.
Once drones skill is trained to level 5, a pilot can train up drone specialization for each race that gives access to T2 drones. These of course are more durable and do more damage than the T1's. This also opens the door to more specialized drones, like ewar and repair drones.
One final note: remote armor repairers will extend the life of your drones if you are planning to be in the field for a while. One hates to give up a high slot, but I find ratting in 0.0 space several systems away from a station to be a hassle as drone attrition builds up.
