Salvaging - New Mini-Profession
Salvaging will be mostly used to harvest ingredients to manufacture Tech I and Tech II mods for both modules and ships. You salvage Wrecks, which are created on destruction of player and npc ships instead of cans. You will remove loot from wrecks as usual, but to salvage the additional ingredients you require Salvaging equipment and skills.
Just want to pick up on the loot (no pun intended)
Make it relatively easy to slice a wreck up with some lasers or something and put the parts in the hold.
Once back at station they become like Compound Alloys for Drones are atm. You can sell them, refine them for basic minerals (trit, pye etc.)
If you have salvaging skills, you can get mods out of the wrecks.
Named loot appears in little jet cans inside the wrecks (so no change there)
Some times, bigger wrecks or structure wrecks need a dedicated / specialist salvaging ship.
For convenience sake, make it so you can tractor wrecks, and make it so that you don't need salvaging lasers or whatever for anything smaller than a BC
(p.s I'm biased toward this idea because it'd increase demand for player made items, and I'm a manufacturer)

Well, you have half your wish already.
Because *every* destroyed enemy leaves a wreck, people end up with several wrecks scattered around their missions, but not all of them actually have loot inside. These wrecks don't disappear when you loot them, and you aren't allowed to rename them, so it's an extreme hassle to keep track of what you've looted and what you haven't. With the current state of wrecks and looting, many people simply don't want to waste their time flying circles around empty wrecks trying to find their loot, myself included.
Naturally, this cuts deeply into a player's income from selling mods and reprocessing for minerals, as well as finding good mods to use themselves.
Loot drops need to be in jetcans like they were before, so you can get your loot and ignore the wrecks if you're unable or unwilling to deal with the salvage.

I'm actually in full agreement on this one. I will most likely get into salvaging eventually. Though it would be extremely nice if the loot items still went into cans as before and leave the wrecks there for salvaging.
It is a pain flying around to each wreck to see if there "might" be loot. Then most likely blowing it up since you can't rename them.

Edited by: Chaonisto on 30/11/2006 11:09:20 Since the expansion came online I have completed one fight mission and since that had waves of enemies coming at me I had about 30 wrecks scattered around my ship for 20kms. Visiting all those wrecks would have taken 3 times the amount of time I spent fighting and with no guarantee of any loot.
The remains of the mission turned me off of doing missions until the wrecks-loot-problem had a solution.
Changing the new system of wrecks to a combination of wrecks and loot cans would be better. We would be able to quickl grab the loot and have the cans disappear like before and the wrecks would be there for salvagers to work on.
As a quick and dirty solution, maybe the Devs could give us a civilian salvager module. Very simple skills to use it (Survey lvl 1, Mechanic lvl 1) and a penalty to anything salvaged from wrecks. At least it would get things moving fast.

That sounds good. What happens if you salvage a wreck that still has loot in it? Does the loot vanish? -------------- Civis Ascendant Sum |

Actually i find it a good idea that the Loot stays inside the Ships an not in cans. I agree that it is a Problem u cant rename the ships, and most biger ships (e.g. BS and greater) are extremely slow so most players donŠt want to spend the time looting the ships they blew.
But as I have ganged up with groups of BS before in a Slasher, Rifter or Thrasher for close defense and collecting the loot for them in exchange for a percentage of the money I think thats a good thing.
If you dont like investing your time in looting, find someone reliable who will ^^ And eventually this is the point where new players allso find a way to go to bigger Complexes, find contact to more experienced players and eventually learn a bit or two on the way.

It is not always possible to have other people to do missions with you. Also, it is not as profitable to have others do missions with you. Simply renaming the wrecks will still increase the amount of time it takes to loot, and will STILL force people to waste time searching through empty wrecks for no loot. The only way to not **** of the mission runners is to put our loot back into cans and let us ignore the wrecks all together.

Just my opinion, but only the ships that drop loot should drop as a wreck. All the other ships should be totally wasted and not drop anything. Increase salvage chances from this and increase what is salvaged from a wreck.
Coding for this could not be that hard if you already have the code to check for if the npc will drop loot or not. "Imagination is the key that unlocks the door." - ME |

...or maybe wrecks should implode once looted.. and leave the salvaging to those that salvage and loot with the right equipment. If you loot it all and leave it empty the wreck implodes.
Maybe?

Or maybe just add a flag to the wrecks that have loot in them? I mean the big deal here is "I can't salvage and lots of wrecks that have no loot confuse me and I don't think it's worth my time to sort through it all." ...

I agree with others, with every ship leaving a wreck and not all having loot, it's become a pain to sort through it, you have no way of flagging or renaming ones you've already looked at. It'll take me a little while till I can do salvaging, until then, it's become a huge pain to find the loot. Other than that, I'm very happy with the new content and very much enjoying my new battlecruiser.

I also agree that the wrecks are cumbersome to looting, though as soon as I get my skills up for it, I will be salvaging the wrecks, and will end up with MORE profit than I would have before, so it's really just a short term problem for me. I did play with salvaging on the test server before deployment, and was happy that you can tractor the wreck behind you, as you are salvaging from it, and are on your way to the next can.

This night I have salvaged Serpentis extravaganza level 4. I used a ship set for salvaging and looting, (2 tractor beams - 2 salvager) following my friendes who were doing the mission. The looting was completed about 1 hour and an half after the completing of the mission! The extra time was mostrly due to the salvaging as the salvager require a good number of cycles before recovering something. From all the work, beside a sore wirst, I have gotten little more than 30 components. As seen before, the "bigger" targets, Core admirals, named NPC wreck produced 0 components. As running missions I can count to get about 3-6 millions every hour, with the current drop rate of salvage, I will not sell the components for less than 150K (3millions/20(number of components in a hour)). At that price I dubt rigging will be much cheap.
About the number of salvaged component recovered: it is interesting noticing that pirate factions ships seem to give the better yeld. So far I have got nothing from mercenary, named NPC or navy ships. Salvagin half of one of the lvl 4 missions against the Amarr navy (about 40 ships) on the test server I have got 0 salvaged items. Someone has different data?

All I know is I did a mission last night and had 12 wrecks give no loot IN A ROW. That is really uncalled for IMO.
-Loot in every wreck (does not have to be rare. Just really frusterating to open a wreck and nothing is there.)
-Some sort of icon to show the wreck has been looted or otherwise empty (Not every one is going to Salvage.) Due to a fatal error. This program has been forced to close. Please restart to fix the problem. Any unsaved data will be lost........Sucks huh? |

Something to indicate a wreck has no loot for those who aren't going to try and salvage every wreck would rock. If not a flag, maybe some little indicator on the wreck model (no flickering light?).
-----
Anyway, most of you missed the main thrust of the idea. It was to replace loot with something like drone compounds to stimulate T2 market for those of us that don't have T2 BPO's
The "having only named/meta modules appear in loot cans" was a sort of dodge to get around the idea totally nerfing named modules.
Now we know what salvaging actually is, i like the idea that you get a can inside a wreck which has the loot in it

I don't know if they added this recently, but I just noticed it the other day.
Wrecks with no loot have their upside-down triangle transparent, while wrecks with loot have it filled in.
Anything you have selected wiill have the upside-down triangle transparent.
I like how salvaging works atm, how it's not hard to train up (T2 researching FTL), but still hard to get items. Everyone can do it but not everyone wants to. ________________________________________________ Login Speed: |

Salvaging !! can be very time consuming thats for sure , would like to hear from anyone who has botherd to get high salvage skill to see if the higher the skill the better the loot , or does it make the chance of getting the loot out on the first scan better ! or does it do anything at all !! to make it worth training to lvl 5 ?!? im lvl 2 + ratting out in 0.0 seems to get the loot out of most wrecks on the second or third cycle or conformation that its empty , i havn't noticed much difference in the quality of the loot between a b/s or a frig but the rarer the rat type the better the drop , but the quantity does change , the bigger the ship.

It is worth training to Salvage L4 I have foung the hit / miss ratio to be much more in my favour at L4, so maybe L5 will be even better.

I have salvaging to 5. It does feel like my success rate has improved, but I hit level 5 around the same time I started salvaging in lower sec systems. It could just be that I don't fail as often as I used to, so I'm salvaging more ships in the same amount of time.

i would just like all wracks without anything to salvage to dissapier into cans if their is loot in them and if not just dissapier.. this way you will not have to use 3 times the time it took to shoot them on moving to them to salvage them all..
AND PLEASE GET MEDIUM AND LARGE SALVAGER AND TRACTOR BEAMS IN THE GAME!! as i bs pilot it is just the biggest game death to see 60 wracks from 10 to 100km from you of everything from bs to frigs (and ofcouse the bs is always 50-100 km away and with a 112 m/s yer... you get the point
