the best bit of eve though, is that you don't have to arbitrarily grind 80 levels worth of exp before you can actually do something. a 1 day old character in a frigate with a scram is still immensely useful. |

My advice would be: "If you want to have fun with EVE Online, just read about it. It's cheaper and funnier than the actual game." The Greater Fool Bar is now open for business, 24/7. Come and have drinks and fun somewhere between RL and New Eden! |

Don't bother explaining it to non-player. You'll still be a nerd in their eyes

Verdis deMosays wrote:So, today I was thinking about how to explain New Eden to other mmo players, and this is what I came up with.
Other MMO: Give a group of kids sticks, tell them where the pinata is, and that it has enough loot in it to make everyone happy. Watch them go cooperate and break the pinata.
EVE: Give a group of kids sticks and tell them that somewhere in the neighborhood there is a pinata with just enough loot for one of them. Don't tell them what it is or looks like, or even that the pinata could be another kid. Just tell them everything is fair game. Watch as they beat each other, the ground, the trees, the cars, and some old ladys dog half to death before realizing that there was only a 50% chance that there even was a pinata to start with.
God I love this game.
Almost perfect, just one fix if I may: Dont give any sticks, just put one small stick in the middle of all children. |

I simply explain the game as it is. I explain that our economy matches RL conditions, that the game takes time and specialization, and that anyone with the right mindset and propper induction can become rich, be envolved in huge ass fights, or have a spreadsheet market manager simulator. |

EVE.
That game where everyone asks how you manually pilot your ship but then figure out you can't.
EVE
That game where you want to walk around the space station but figure out you can't unlock to door.
EVE
That game where its not Star Citizen. "Entitlement" is a euphemism for "I hate the way you play and it makes me cry like a baby". If you fantasize about being immoral it means you enjoy being immoral deep down. Captain Tardbar: The official grumpy cat of General Discussion. |

I had a buddy get into this game a few days ago. I've only been playing for 8 months now or so; while it's a respectable amount of time it's not a huge amount compared to some people.
Day later he's got webs, points, and MWDs on his Amarrian frigates.
Sure, he's not able to fill every role in the game at this point, that comes with time, but to say you can't do things (nearly) immediately is wrong, assuming you have some assistance. Takes about 8 hours of training.
And compared to most MMOs, where you need to play the tutorial on repeat 2857 times (GO GET 20 BEAR ASSES) until you can actually play the game, that's absolutely nothing. |

EVE is explained much more simple than that: Lord of the Flies Online
Also, you're absolutely right about the "kids" part. Now imagine if EVE online had the same description you've given, but swap "kids" with "adults". Ah well. |

Quite so, although i'm surprised to hear you agree, because that has a very radical consequence for how CCP should categorise the playerbase.

Space mmo meets evolution through natural selection. You start off lost and helpless in the middle of a far off region of 4000+ clustered stars. You are given a few simple instructions that barely prepare you for what waits ahead. You are then left to find your own way in this universe amongst the predators and prey. It is a test to see if you can endure and find your place in the game or fail and be forgoten like so many before you. Either outcome is entirely due to you and the choices you make.
It is just a game, but it is a game that jams all the players of Earth into one server. Thus making it a globally social experience.
