2 years ago at Fanfest, CCP gave out EVE security tokens (small plastic devices with a button and a primitive screen that generate 1 time use log in codes to augment account security), and they even had panels talking about how they would be increasing account security. Why have we not seen these security tokens put into use, or better yet why do we not at least have a virual security token as is common for every other MMO. Nearly every other major MMO has either physical security tokens, virtual ones that work on iOS (kill yourself) or android, but EVE still seems to remain in the stone age in this regard. Can we please get an update on this security system? It's not like it's that hard to implement, there are numerous solutions available that CCP can implement for little to no cost to get the ball rolling on this. |

Given that apparently it would take CCP something like 5 years worth of manpower to make it so you can log out of the game and just go back to character select, we'll probably never see something like this, as much as it would be appreciated. |

Hell, Blizzard Entertainment was actively trying to get companies to implement these features anyways, and offered their own blueprints so that other companies could do so! |

Token security is being done by applications on Android and I Phone (i.e. Star Wars Old Republic) and the push button/small screen type ones have been around for ages. Its up to CCP to implement on their end (server side).
They would probably have to change the launcher yet again to accommodate this, since everyone and their mother has second/third/fourth/etc. accounts.

It's actually mentioned in the CSM minutes.
One of the things standing in the way is people having verified email addresses. Apparently, as of the CSM summit, they hadn't hit the numbers they wanted. You need verified contact information, so when someone loses their token, it's possible to reset the details.
The work that's been done with SSO has been, in large part, to get this able to work. It's a 'relatively' simple expansion.
Of course, the launcher will have to be used to handle the log in, rather than the legacy code in the exefile.exe. The Launcher is being actively worked on, to make it useful for multiboxers. Token's not a bad guy, why are you siccing security on him? Is it because he's black?

I think the whole verified email stuff they rolled out 6 months ago was the first step to get the tokens implemented as CCP didn't have a suitable process to recover accounts in case a keyfob died/was lost.
Still I think the fobs handed out will be out of battery long before they can be used in-game. Mashie Saldana Dominique Vasilkovsky

The code generators were CCP Sreegs' baby, and he's moved on now.
Probably best to put them down as something else in the long list of ideas that CCP have started to work on then abandoned. Meh, security tokens only really help those not able to protect themselves, i only use a security token on 1 site and thats paypal, i bypass the token login each and every time anyway because its annoying as sin to deal with, the token is only there because paypals security on people attempting to bruteforce logins is stupidly high and they keep putting limitations on my account even when nobody is going to bruteforce my password before i retire >.>
Personally i've never lost an account on anything that was directly my fault in which case a security token really wouldn't have made any difference as these accounts were compromised due to servers being hacked or parts of the site being exploited in ways outside of my control, but i canuse those are the kinds see that people who fall for the average jita local scam might need them bec of people who read and follow the links in every email from a nigerian prince or from banks telling them to confirm their details (phishing) |
