Hi,
I am just wondering what tool or application is used by CCP for developing the object models and the textures for them. I saw the application many times in the videos and haven't seen that UI yet so figured it's worth to ask.

I had a feeling like that but wasn't sure. Is there any reason why 3DS Max is so much used? |

3DSMax for modeling, Maya for animation, from the looks of it. |

Hollywood uses 3DSMax. So it wouldnt surprise me if the majority of hte making the model work was done in that engine in one form or another.
Concept Art wise I know they use CS5 mostly but I have seen some pertty non CS5 setups on some videos in the past.

Everything in recent that has been seen has been done in Maya, but my guess is that Dust514 is 3dsMax for the ease of use with the UDK. |

Only because arty-farty types are such sheep. I have a daughter who was trying to convince me why she just had to have a Mac Book because Final Cut Pro is the "industry standard" and because of this everyone in the media business absolutely has to use Apple, because blah blah blah. I call BS. Blender is nice, too.

Blender isn't bad but has a lot of down falls such ass the lack of customer support, plugins everything is community based is a double edged sword where a lot of the times things don't work or you can't get support for them.
Blender won't be used on a large project industry scale because if it breaks and a pipeline shuts down you are boned. By using an autodesk product you can call them up and ***** them out and they get people working on the issue.
3dsMax isn't the only product used, and I wouldn't say it is industry standard. It does out sell Maya, but Maya is still very widely used. Almost every shop in Toronto Canada for example is a maya house. Maya is also used by pixar and dreamworks on their animations. Digital Extremes is also a maya house.
Each program has it's ups and downs. Also for the record more animation for games especially are move to motionbuilder. |

3dsmax is mostly used because you can program your own specialty version of it.

From what I understand, there aren't many industrial 3D modeling applications out there besides 3DSMax and Maya that provide the necessary functionality. Though CCP could be using DOGA for all I care, so long as the resulting product is awesome. I do recall reading somewhere a few months ago that big objects like supercapitals and stations are built in a custom application because of the level of detail required. |

There are a few other systems out there of that level of quality, but they tend to be custom built, or custom built versions of other AutoDesk software.
And yes, CCP uses Maya and other AutoDesk products for modeling, as can be seen from ship model exports and the like. |

You can create scripts and plugins for all autodesk products. 3dsMax has Maxscript obviously. But maya as meL which to be honest is a steaming pile of dog waste, but where maya shines is the fact it has python, and having python is what makes it awesome for that.
But I know python will be making it's way to almost all autodesk products. Motion Builder already has it and maya obviously. I know Blur studios has created a python plugin for 3dsMax so I have no doubt it is just around the corner for it. |
