Hi Everyone Just got myself (after training for what seems like months ) a mining barge and some drones. Ive just a couple of questions as a noob to mining.
1) I tell my drones to mine repeatedly so they go back and forth to rock. Do they need to be told anything else so they fill up there cargo holds before returning? They seem to come back to ship with far less than their cargo hold capacity. So is this normal?
2) Im training refining skills etc so i can mine/refine ice Is it best just to refine the ice then sell the results or simply sell the ice itself? Is the ice worth anything by itself as it gives a high price in market view but doesnt have many buyers for anywhere near that price.
3) Is it profitable to mine ice before i have all the max skills for refining or does this make it not worth it?
Thanks in advance for any answers.

1.) Drones have a smaller capacity to begin with and I frankly never waste my time with thim. Yehy do bring their whole capacity though unless the rock popped on them. Just recheck your numbers. Do know though that just telling them to mine they will keep doing it.
2.) There is no market for ice nor ice products at the moment or every really.
P.S. If you need a mining corp feel free to contact me in game.

Yeh I was starting to wonder whether there was any point to the mining drones for the small amount they bring back, ill just fill up with combat drones for protection i think. Also is there any way to strengthen my retrievers armour/shields with 2 strip miners fitted as it seems to be not very strong or long lasting in an attack?

The only way to boost a Retriever's armor/shields is to fit one of those modules that fit your desire. However I've never checked so i can't be sure if the barge has the CPU or PG to handle it.
If I'm solo mining in my barge I deploy combat drones to handle the belt rats, if in a team with a security pilot or two I'll switch up for mining drones.
Mining Drones do serve a purpose on a barge, they help you save cycles on those small near to popping 'roids. Why set your Strip Miner I on an asteroid with only 200 units of -Insert your favorite ore type- when you can set a mining drone or two on it and turn your Strip Miner to a bigger rock? This way you don't waste the cycle time on the module. At least that's how I do it.

Instead of using mining drones on small roids dont run the entire cycle if you want to pop the roid. If its got 200 lef tin it just turn the miner on for 5 seconds or so, when you turn it off you'll get the ore.
The retriever doesnt offer much protection in terms of shields and armor and you cant add alot to it, however keep working toward the covie and you can handle more rats.

There is a market for ice products (e.g. tower/dread fuel). Billions of isk of the stuff gets traded every week. Tap into the trade networks to find it. I suggest starting with the posfuntime chat channel.

Thanks for the comments Ive checked my drones and how much they fetch back with them Drone cargo hold capacity 1200 and they only bring back fraction of that (120 units of scordite) If they filled their cargo hold they would fill my retrievers cargo in 1 run (2 drones) Doesnt make sense although im probably missing the obvious

if you look at drones, they have something like 15 OU. when i miend they always came back when my lasers finished a cycle. this means that their cargo cap is kinda pointless, as they bring back their OU.
what i dont understand is that a 5m3 drone can carry back 15m3 of ore. if they can compress ore why cant we?

A full set of Mining Drone I's brings back something like 75m3 of ore/minute with some skill. It's not a lot, but it's about as much as a Miner II. Over time, it adds up. I usually use them just so that I know about how long until I have to empty my hold again. 3 drone cycles per strip miner cycle

I don't have maxed skills, just Drone Interfacing 4 (+80% yield) and Mining Drone Operation 4 (+20% yield), and if I used Mining Drones Is I would get much more than 75m¦ per minute :
base yield of the Mining Drone I = 15m¦
15 * 1.8 * 1.2 = 32.4m¦ for each drone, so it's 162m¦ for 5 drones.
Even with just the req Mining Drone Operation 1 and no Drone Interfacing, each drone would yield 15.75m¦ every minute, or 78.75m¦ for 5 drones ...
Those xx.75m¦ do count toward the amount of ore mined, just not every cycle, the game keeps those fractions of units "in memory" until it can add a full unit of ore to the stack. That's why you sometimes get a unit or two on top of what your drones/lasers should yield.
I use Harvester Mining Drones with my mining Apoc (boo-hiss, I know ...), they cost an arm and a leg (about 8 millions each) because they are a rare drop, but they have a base yield of 30m¦ ... with my skills, that's 64.8m¦/min for each drone, or 324m¦/min for a full flight of 5 ...

I was not mining for some time but I hope I am not wrong.
1. Miner I drone can take up to 15 m3 of ore, Miner II up to 25 m3. Every ore has it`s unit volume and drone can take only round multipliers of it. For example Miner II can take only 16 m3 of arkonor per cycle becouse it is arkonor`s unit volume size. 2. If are you going to sell in the market, use Price History function. This shows you real prices what were used in last few weeks. 3. I personally thing Ice refining skill doesn`t weight too much if are you refining only small to medium batches of ice. It gives about 3-4% difference to yield taken with other refining skills at 5-5.
