I, like everyone else it seems am looking forward to seeing the models similar to the gorgeous Brutix example handed out at last years FanFest. I couldn't wait though so got thinking about the alternatives. A recent Digg post showed some guy had developed a Serenity model that you cut from paper, folded, glued and assembled.
I thought it'd be a hoot to try this with one of the ships from eve. The Rifter looked pretty good, is an interesting ship to look at (at least imho) so I tried that. This is what I came up with. It's now sat on my desk on a makeshift stand but looks (again imho) the business.
After checking with Kieron, I thought I'd post the flat patterns (all 7 pages and 60-odd parts) here for all to play with. There's a few of things you ought to know first:
- Although I numbered all the parts, I haven't included instructions, quite possibly because I've been pretty busy and haven't had chance to write any.
- Alignment on some parts isn't perfect. In fact the intakes/vents/grilles on the front are fiddly to align. I'll adjust this at a later date.
- The chains/hoses/hangy things at the bottom of the ship are very fiddly to glue and mount. Brute force em
).
- Time to complete is around 2 or 3 evenings (your mileage may vary).
- I suggest you use something thicker than your average 80gsm copier paper. The model pictured was made from 160gsm and it's about right in terms of rigidity and doesn't tend to curl or soak up glue.
- Score along all the black and grey lines. If you miss one, it'll become apparent when you're folding the part together. A useful tip when scoring to use an empty ballpoint pen as it doesnt break the paper and leave ugly white lines. If you don't have an empty pen, use a black or dark green colour (blue'll probably look crap).
- Use a sharp craft knife to cut out the parts. Use a ruler to guide along the longer straight edges. It might help to roughly cut out individual parts with scissors first, to make em easier to handle.
- When assembling your Rifter, make sure that you don't attempt too much at once. Allow time for the glue to dry and work in a methodical manner
- Once the model is assembled and you can see white lines (where you've scored or the edge of the paper/card) use a black/green felt tip to colour it in. From the average viewing distance, this looks great
There's sharp stuff and glue involved here. Please remember to be responsible with this stuff and if you require help/supervision to use said sharp objects, please do so. I can't be held responsible for you cutting off your F1-F8 finger . Oh, and make sure there's something resistant to sharps underneath the parts you're cutting out.
Anyhow, comments please. It's been an interesting little project and of course I plan to do some more - if there's changes need to be made, I will, based on popular consensus. Currently I'm eyeing the Incursus and the Raven. Though I reckon a 'geddon might be pretty darned impressive too. Post ur thoughts and I'll attempt the most requested.
The flat patterns (just over 3MB PDF link via EVE Files - Happy Birthday guys!).

That is just brilliant.
How long did it take you to develop the actual plans themselves? |

A fair amount of days worth of work spread over three weeks. Wanted to get this done and posted before the Tranq. upgrade but missed it.

I mailed kieron before even posting here, to make sure it was all OK with CCP. It's their texture and model after all. As for licensing and stuff, I'll just host em on Eve-Files and make em free - no other legal or moral way to do it.

Smiffa o/ The greatest respect to you. Great job.
I would love to see some Amarr ships but I guess the curves would be a bummer.

Well, thats two for the Heron/Buzzard (just a change in texture and few other bits i reckon). The 'geddon would be nice, as I said up top. I hope to get around to all of em eventually tho. ---

Damn it Smiffa, I was planing to do a rifter paper model too, you stole my project. Just kidding, You were first fair and square, mine would be finished in like months with free time I have lately. And you seem to be pro at paper modeling anyway.
Well I was planning to make some other models too but I was going to decide on next model by isk donations, I suggest you do it too cos I know it's quite time consuming work keeping you from playing. I just wonder if there is place for two in modeling bussines
Anyway can I ask what software you used? I got myself Pepakura Designer for unfolding and was wondering what 3d modeling software to use.
btw hint for others, the flat patterns are in pdf but you can print em to an image and edit a bit, so you can place corp logo somewhere on the hull or do some other modifications (custom vinyls or pink camo maybe ), I suppose Smiffa don't mind about modding his work a bit.
