From a database perspective I can see how the different market ranges need to be "sorted" somehow, but I can't help but wonder if an alternate possibilty that is more fun and realistic could be implemented.
Each station is X number of jumps from any other station in the game (X is an integer but in some cases invalid as some systems cannot be reached). This means that it would be possible to display market data more realisticly and more inportantly make the market more fun for everyone. Let's imagine that a skills called "Trading" existed. A basic starting character could set his market range at Station, System or "Custom".
Low would enable him/her to "see" a maximum of 'A' system jumps away from the current one (A being a suitable number like 3 or 4). With "Trading" level 1 he/she could increase the number of system jumps he/she could "see" on the market. So the "Trading" skill would in effect allow for better use of the market. You could even have a skill that allowed you to place sell orders remotely up to X number of systems away, X increasing with skill level.
Anyway this arrangement could help make the market "divisions" more sensible. Neighbouring systems placed in different Regions would effect eachother in reality, but in the EVE game they are isolated from eachother (in a marketplace sence) which is silly IMO.
Anyway I realize that there may be problems implementing such a feature from a database perspective but such problems might be solvable (I am no DB expert). -- "I am an expert in not caring. Edited by: Limbo on 03/09/2003 08:56:40 So what you want would look like this in SQL:
select * from market where jumps < tradingSkillFormula;
Good idea by the way, it would promote the trader profession. I don't think that some stations are inaccessable from another station, atleast I have not found any.

Some stations in Jove space are inacessable at the moment (or so I hear) :) -- "I am an expert in not caring. The trick is to stop giving a rat's ass about anyone else and start thinking about what YOU want, what YOU diserve, what the world ows YOU!" - Bender |

Great idea, about using range instead of region, and the skills to increase your station viewing range. Would also like to see Agents with the ability to give a "peak" into the markets of even further systems as well. ______________

i think a big issue i've seen about systems being in same region, is that when buying region wide.. you could end up buying from a system that is over 12 jumps away. and being in the same region, i had to actually leave the region in order to go back into the region from a side door in order to get to it. So being able to do a serch for items that are (x) number of jumps away.. would be more sensible.. since if you look at the advanced market info supposedly gives you the number of jumps to the item. Wherever you go.. There ye be.. |
