Hello,
Thanks for reading this, and please hear me out.
I want to get into PVP in the near future. My main character is this one, you can find me on eveboard.
I'd like to start a secondary character on the path to PVPing, and right now all venues are open. This is where I'd appreciate advice on where I should go.
The PVP I foresee myself doing in the near future is small scale, maybe just roaming losec or null sec. I don't really know how it works out there. I likely would only go out with a friend or two, not as a lone wolf.
I don't need to make money, I can afford to lose about 500m / month in a worst case scenario. I would prefer to do well though, in the long run.
I would appreciate recommendations on a ship and skills, as well as what kind of activities I should be engaging in that would serve as a good learning experience.
I do not want to know what you did and why you love it, unless you feel it applies. I'm looking for feedback on what might be geared well to me. In order to help you understand what that is, let me explain who I am.
I am a 27 year old, I have a 5 year old daughter, and my wife is due in a month. It's a boy! I play EVE when I have time, I can't be invested in big wars or have timely responsibility. Keeping money in my wallet and the POS fueled are my prime responsibilities. However I do get time to myself where I could be getting into PVP situations.
I'm a programmer working for the federal government in Canada.
Initially in EVE I was part of a training corporation in which I learned quite a bit and quickly became a teacher. I ran a program that would take into account all the junk that my corpmates would accumulate throughout the week, and then pay them out and use the junk to build discounted goods or make a profit. By the end of it we were putting 1B ISK worth of goods through the system per week. It made for much cleaner and more valuable hangars.
During that time I had mainly been running missions. I flew a Rifter, Thrasher, Rupture, Stabber, Maelstrom, Machariel, and finally a Vargur. I spent entire days for months at a time running L4s. I have run a shield tank on almost all my ships, usually passive if the ship was intended to be armor, and active on Maelstroms, Vargurs, etc.
Eventually I moved on to work in a joint venture where we specialized in mass production. This is when I started PLEXing and minimizing my time on EVE. Now I spend about 2h a week playing and at least 1B ISK per month for myself.
I chose Minmatar at random but I have learned to love their versatility, and their proficiency through extensive skills.
I have used EFT ad PYFA a lot, so putting together a fit and figuring out skills and such is no problem for me. I want to choose a ship that works for my play style and train ONLY the skills that I need, preferably to a level 5 on any that apply.
If I had to describe my play style, I like the idea of being sneaky but often it doesn't work out. I revert to being a tank. I prefer to take a pounding than to dish one out. As such, I always seek to have a trait that makes me a target, so I'm not ignored. Usually some kind of trait that requires a bit of skill. Here are my other game experiences:
Starcraft (1) Spent most of my youth playing, went between Zerg and Protoss. I was pretty horrible but enjoyed the game.
World of Warcraft Played a warrior, I was pretty crumby. I was DPS for leveling and kept it up while raiding, wanted to be a tank but never was very good.
Starcraft II Played Zerg almost exclusively, trained pretty hard, got an APM of 280 and did pretty well. i decided to quit when my family started coming together, I felt I'd reached a certain level and that's really all I was after.
DotA I played Pudge, practiced with the hook quite a bit, he's a fat tank with some skill shots in there so it suited me well. I put out about 100 APM.
Boardgames Chess and more recently Go, if I can find someone who will play. I like strategy.
DUST 514 Logibro, tried to get fat, used shields. Followed people around and kept them alive or brought them back, set up spawns, ammo dumps, kept the fight alive.
I like to be able to use wit in my gameplay, straight up numbers make me feel trapped and bored.
I guess based on this some people might be thinking logistics, but I don't know if they are very tanky and I don't think they work well in groups of 2-3. Better to have some straight damage I would think. I want to be somewhat mobile but I don't want to be a tiny annoyance someone can just fly swat if they choose to.
My feeling on races: Minmatar - Lots of training time, I'm fine with that, if it pays off Gallente - I don't like drones Caldari - Shields and missiles... I've trained for all of this but never used it. Amarr - Maybe I'm out to lunch, but no one I know is Amarr and they seem completely inflexible in PVP. Am I wrong?
Any recommendations are appreciated, feel free to ask any additional questions.
Thanks for the help!

Put a point and a scram on a rifter. Go lose a few ships. That's my advice. |

Join a corp with a lot of PvP pilots. That way when you log on, chances are, someone will have something going. race won't matter, ship can be interchangeable. Just get active and shoot stuff. |

So I should get out and try it before I venture very far skill-wise, see what I like, and go from there?
Thanks for the advice so far. |

Valkyrs wrote:So I should get out and try it before I venture very far skill-wise, see what I like, and go from there? Pretty much yeah. All of the races are more or less equally viable in PvP. As to your feelings on the races:
Minmatar - Not as much training as they used be since you can now go either projectiles or missiles instead of both. Also they are leaning a bit more towards shields these days instead of being equally split between shields and armor. However to use all of their ships well still requires a sizable training investment.
Gallente - They have a solid line of gun boats in addition to their line of drone ships. However you will need drone skills no matter what race you fly.
Caldari - They also have a solid line of gun boats in addition to their line of missile boats. Also missiles are a good weapon system. Don't be afraid to try them out.
Amarr - They are both flexible and inflexible depending on which ship you are talking about. Their laser boats are one trick ponies to an extent but this does not stop them from being good. Mostly because Scorch is amazing. However they also have a solid line of very flexible drone boats and even a fair number of T2 missile boats.
Oddly enough Amarr are probably the most flexible race if you train all of their ships. However doing so also makes them the most skill intensive race. Minmatar are still very flexible though, maybe even more flexible than the Amarr if you train all of their ships. Caldari and Gallente can both switch between rails and blasters to achieve a reasonable degree of flexibility with drones and missiles giving each side its own unique flavor. |

Thanks for the info on the races, I didn't know a lot of that stuff, I was just going on my PvE experience (and lack thereof)
I was hoping to figure out a specific ship so I can train for it specifically. My main is pretty much set to fly almost anything, but I was hoping not to get him involved in PvP. Maybe I'll put him into PvP instead, as it's easier to train my alts to fill his role.
I'll start with a small cheap ship and work up. |

Frigs and dessies can be a lot of fun to fly and fight and they are cheap enough to replace. Few levels of each racial frig skill and their weapon system won't take long to train and you could just try them all out and see what suits you best. Then you can just focus training on one race and weapon you enjoy using.
Truth is you will lose a lot of ships at beginning because in-game skills is one thing but out-of-game skills is another. You can have all level V and the best ships with best fits and still lose them to a guy with meta guns on t1 frig just because he know what he is doing and you don't. He can kill you with a newbie ship because his experience gives him an edge you have no chance to buy, you just have to learn all those little things by fighting and losing and fighting more and avoiding making mistakes that lead to your previous loss. |

Yes, real life experience will be very important... We used to hold frigate tournaments and frigate free for alls in our old corp, lots of adrenaline, scrambling and mistakes! I liked it a lot but it made me realize my skills didn't count for much.
I liked the idea of RvB when I heard about them, and think I might go that venue. |

I already knew this. I have the uncanny ability to understand a person entirely by reading one of their sentences. Just from that freudian slip I was able to see that as a small child you were 12 years old at some point. Am I right?? i can tell you much more about yourself you never even knew, if you would like me to teach you! |

The original post is too long and I am missing the "TL;DR".
Just play the tutorial missions. After playing those, you will pretty much get an idea of the game and what would be fun to you to pursue. Ask in the Newbie channel for tips about how to pursue those activities you found enjoyable while running the tutorials. That's how the journey starts.
And concerning the question you asked in the end about the Amarr. - Yes, you are wrong about the Amarr, and the larger the ships get, the mightier the Amarr get.

RvB sounds perfect for your new alt. As for ship choices, it's preference or situation, neither of which we can answer you right now, so just jump in and start! There's nothing worse than an EVE player, generally considered to be top of the food chain in the MMO world, that cannot smacktalk with wit and coherency. |
