Hey guys, this is the beginning of my second week in eve and its going quite well, up until the last two days.
I got myself the skill to fly a cruiser finally and got out to .3 sec space, and have been killing rats in asteroid fields. the payout is phenominal i find in the rare modules but in the last day I have had my Caracal blown up four times! each time a ridiculous ransom asked which i have not even a tenth of in most cases. I am now able to get into a Ferox but am so broke from all these recent massacres im afraid it will take me quite a while to acquire one and am i debating wether it is even worth it, as the same may just happen again.
Is there an easier way to make money that would be safe or more effective? someone mentioned agent missions but all i seem to get is package delivery, im not running around with a payload of missile to drop off hobos :( is there a form of pirate hunting through agents that is somewhat safer/ more cash?

Do a show info on your corp of choice (you could search for it with your adressbook). See the agents tab. Go for a command / (internal) security / surveillance agent. Or, you could start checking local as you should be >_>

You've been playing for two weeks and think you should be flying a Ferox in 0.3 space? No wonder you're broke. You lack even the most basic skills to fly that ship, and probably don't even have enough skills to fly those caracals you keep throwing away.
If you insist on playing in 0.3 without experience or ability, join a player corp. They can show you around, and possibly even give you some low sec areas to play in where you won't be ganked endlessly.
Otherwise stop playing silly, and learn the game before trying the "high end" parts of it. -- Lil Miner |

I have absolutely zero problems with .2 rats and whatnot in belts, and my skills seem more then adequate to blast them to bits without even losing 10% of my shield, its just the damn pirates I don't stand a chance against :(

But the "damn pirates" are part of the game, dude, so insisting that you have plenty of skills to handle the NPCs and therefore belong in 0.3 is pretty silly. :-)

Run missions while you get your skills higher. Or run complexes. Or hell, kill npc's in .5. They may not have as much a bounty, but you usually will not get blown away by pirates either, saving you the cost of replacing your ship so often.
NPC's have zero skills, compared to players. Well, except for noobs of course. _______________________________________________

What missions would you recommend running exactly? and as far as complexes, I have no idea what they are or how they work, short of the quick one i partook in the tutorial, i never have seen another pop up in the game thus far. A quick explanation would be appreciated. Thanks!

Like stated above "Go for a command / (internal) security / surveillance agent" stick with a single corporation's agents so you get good standing and can do level 2 and 3 missions.

Go for kill mission. I suggest you read Ras Blumin post again. Those are the agent type that give you kill mission. You can find them without much trouble by opening your map, go to settings/option tab -> star -> then scroll down to tick "My agent". Some systems will flare up in green colour, and if you hover your pointer on one of them you will see available agent in that system.
Lvl 1 and lvl 2 mission doesn't seem to pay much, but if you reach lvl 3 the payment will be almost like rat hunting in low sec. Plus doing mission will give you Loyalty Points (LP) which can be trade for items during agent offer. Building up LP is another way of getting Navy Issue ship that you've been hearing about, and also implants. And Lvl 4 is almost the same as hunting in 0.0
There are many alternative for getting cash, you just need to discover them. ---------

Take all the above advice.
I also had the skills to fly a cruiser within my first few weeks of eve, being able to drive a Formula One race car does not mean you are ready to compete in a Grand Prix!
Many many basic skills need to be trained to at least lvl 4 before any new player can begin to dream of taking on player pirates in this game.
By the way I also have had a Brutix for a month now and I am using it to mine more effectively while I train up the skills I need to stand a snowballs chance in Hell out in Lowsec.
Examples of essential skills include engineering to lvl 4 minimum as well as things like repair system, hull upgrades, energy management and Many of the Navigation skills, then there is gunnery and all related skills for your weapons of choice.
But there is still hope for you though. Simply fit one or two warp stablisers and be intelligent when picking hunting grounds, there are a few simple precautions involved in safe ratting. Just look around on these boards for help regarding setting up safespots ect ect...
Best of luck. Remember that we are babes in the woods up until at least a good few months of play and you always need to be very paranoid in lowsec. I have yet to lose a ship to Player pirates although I have had many close calls. Lucky I am thickskinned enough to endure their taunts in Local about my noobish cowardice. It stings a bit, but not as much as losing my whole ship would.

It can be frustrating, I know. Thing is, killing cruiser NPC's in 0.3 at 40km with missiles is entirely different from actually being able to handle yourself in lowsec, I'm afriad.
You have to take lowsec space as a package - and PvP is part of that package. One of the most common mistakes of new players in this game is getting to big ships FAST. I did it too. But it actually puts you at a real disadvantage.
You will not have the skills to use the ship properly, and its extremely high risk. You'll just lose a lot more money than you make. If an experienced PvP player met your Cruiser or BC, and they were in a Frigate, they would almost certainly be able to kill you. It may sound suprising but I've seen it happen so many times.
Work on the basic skills first, get your PvP skills up to scratch. It will take about 2-3 months to get to an acceptable point where you can solo in lowsec and look after yourself... so long as your training is focused.
In the meantime, you can minimise the risk by running Empire missions, or travelling with friends when in lowsec and also using the standard precautions like instant bookmarks, keeping an eye on local.
If you are NPCing solo in lowsec, its very dangerous to do so with anyone else in the system. Its easy to avoid piracy but it will take some effort on your part. Find an empty system if you really want to solo NPC in lowsec.

i've been playing for 15-16 dayas now... just over two weeks. I'm STILL in my Merlin and and will be for another week until i get into a Moa (Cruiser). I'm biding my time, training skills and making ISK. I'm in NO rush or hurry to upgrade... this game doesn't seem to be 'a race to level 60' like some others. I'm having plenty of fun in my little frigate (for now)! _______________________________________________

IĘve been playing for a month or two now. I jumped into a Cruiser pretty quickly, but for me it wasnĘt with aspirations of PvP or low-sec space. I just wanted to run lvl 2 agents that I just couldnĘt handle with a Frigate.
Laughably, IĘve spent the past couple of days playing around with Frigates. On a whim, I took my loot scooper ship (Min Probe) to a 0.6 asteroid belt with a par of low-grad ACĘs on it. Took down the rats with ease ą was quite fun. So the past couple of days IĘve been playing around with Frigates almost as much as my Vexor ą got into an Executioner too for S&G.
Point is, donĘt be in too big a hurry to get into the huge ships. It may not be as profitable to hunt with a Frigate, but itĘs still a helluva lot of fun. Especially once you have your skills up! Plus, from a profit perspective ą are you really coming out on-top if you are losing expensive ships to player pirates?

There's definately something loveable about frigates. :) Even though I can fly a battleship fairly well, I still do some level three missions in my Assault Frigate because it's just so damn fun to fly. :) Don't do quite as much massive damage, but zooom!! :) -- Lil Miner |

Oh I so understand the OP. I lived in 0.0 space for about two days running missions. Always monitored the local channel and somehow I lived. The payout is so great there! But I got owned recently. Lost ship and got podded cause I refused to pay.
Take heed noobs, even though you have a cruiser doesn't mean you are ready yet for low sec. Or you can learn the hard way.

thanks for the tip on useing the star map to find new contacts. Will help a lot.
In the week i've been playing, ive gotten up to a destroyer. Currently training for Cruisers, but I'm not sure if I'll got up to one right away. My Destroyer is fast enough, with a decent hold size, allows 7 turrents and one Missle.
For basic safe 0.8 and up mining it's fine for now, or fo rdoing agent missions it's fine.
Can I ask a question on a different subject? Can an ajent run out of missions? they seem to be pretty basic random missions.
Is it better to stick with one Agent for your career or with many?
Or one per disapline(fighting, tradeing, manufactureing....)
