First off I'm new to Eve so please be gentle and expand any acronyms. :)
After some extremely hard work I figured out how to purchase a new ship and add some basic equipment. So with my new Bantam I set out to the belts with 2 mining lasers and racked up enough cash for another upgrade.
After carefully examining the affordable ships I purchased a destroyer. I have 3 active mining lasers with a 4th mounted but offline. (I'm currently training to expand my CPUs abilities and by tonight I'm hoping to have the 4th online)
Anyway I see floating containers all about the mine fields. My plans is to obtain the skills required for this and then mine with my pimped out destroyer and haul with some other ship.
To use floating containers it seems I must train anchoring. Do they have the same life span as a jettisoned container? (1.? hours) Are the secure containers with password protection truly secure from others?
Is this even a good idea?
Thanks all.

Good choice. Don't forget to fit guns as well if you're going into 0.5-0.7 systems to keep the rats off

They last forever, hence all the littering

If you keep your password secure, yes

Yes and no. Secure cans give you indefinite time to get a hauler and empty the cans. Plus, the can can't be looted. But they have some major setbacks. You can only anchor them 5km away from every other can or asteroid (which can be very tricky in belts with plenty of cans already and means you'll have a limited range of what you can mine) and they have a limited capacity; the largest is still "only" 3900m3. Compare this to a normal jettisoned cargo can, which can contain 27.000m3 (but will only last an hour and can be looted by others)
Hope this helps

Anchor-able containers require corporation and anchoring skills.
If you are solo-mining it might be worthy, but take into consideration that they have a limited capacity.
They can be anchored in any place lower than 0.7 for an unlimented ammount of time, just be sure to pick them up later if you dont want to use them anymore.....so to avoid "loittering space".
In 0.8 or higher space, they behave like regular jet-cans.

Both types of cans can be destroyed by weapons fire I believe - obviously Concord react if this is in empire space

Corporation skills? I didn't see that part in the requirements to deploy them. Good to know.. thx.

I'm a tad confused here..... so it works in 0.7 and lower space?

Good to forget. You only need Anchoring I for secure containers; this doesn't have prerequisite skills (not even Corporation Management).

Yep. And using a secure container in >0.8 is not a good idea if you can't anchor it, since others can then scoop it up... They cost money

If you're running on a destroyer, try the Gallente Catalyst. With good Electronics skills, and for a bit of cash, you can fit 4 XeCL mining lasers, which provides more intake than the 3 Miner 2s you can fit on it tops, and has enough CPU left to fit a set of 4 125mm railguns, giving you enough firepower to hold off almost any .5 or higher rat.
