Edited by: Siigari Kitawa on 24/01/2006 22:48:17 Okay, so recently I was discussing my afk ratting idea in the help channel.
Here's how it works, there's three ways to do it.
afk ratting method 1: This is the most minimalist afk ratting method I've used. If you have no ship that is not actively able to take a pummeling via tanking, join a gang that a friend forms. Make sure they're the leader then have them warp you around within 60 or more klicks of the belts. Have them blow things up. Move on to the next belt the same way.
afk ratting method 2: This is a more active method if you can devote a little time to ratting while at work or something. Simply, in the General Options of EVE, turn your auto-lock up to 8. Then, have someone form a gang with you, them being the leader. Have them warp you around within 15 km of the belts and when someone locks you, you lock them back automatically, and turn on all your guns. Simple.
afk ratting method 3: This method works well if you have a ship that can take a beating. Strip your fittings and put in as many power diagnostic units that you can in the low slots, then fit your mid slots with as many shield rechargers as you can. Activate them all. Then, have someone form a gang with you, them being the leader. Have them warp you around within 15 km of the belts and when you get shot, the shields regenerate at a decent enough rate that you'll be okay. Adversely, if you are more fit to armor tank, do the same, except fill your mid slots with cap rechargers and your lows with the correct armor hardneners for the area. This is a more fast, albiet dangerous way to afk rat.
THIS WORKS. I've been doing it for a while and it makes a decent amount of money. :D

afk ratting method 1: You mean have someone else drag you around?
afk ratting method 2: How do you turn on your guns whilst AFK?
afk ratting method 3: You TANK whilst AFK? -- bumcheekcity

I cant see how this is afk ratting?
1) someone drags you around does all the work and you take half the isk? You might as well stay in station and just get them to donate money to you at the end of the day.
2) assuming the rats do lock you and not your friend, how do you then fire on them from afk? Again someone is dragging you around. So it is the sme as option one.
3) Even if you are passive tanking the rats will rarely lock you, most the time they arent in range when you warp into belt and if you dont agro them which you cant if afk. And the rare time they are in range they will lock your friend half the time as well. So again this is the same as option one.

why are you playing Eve while at work??
is your boss aware of this?
are you wondering when when you will be fired for playing games instead of being productive at work?
if you are the boss, go for it, if not, worry...worry a lot...

Incidnetly your suggesting a macro for the 2nd one which is ofcourse an exploit, I also beleive afk is supposivly an exploit anyway (somone in the CA got baned for sitting afk on the npc spawn point spawn killing(which at this point chain spawned them fast) cruisers every 2 seconds with 8 sbs going for a couple of days made billions of isk.
Anyway its easier to mine afk with an indy tbh or do hauling missions/logistics if you can only play eve little attetnion. Feel free to use the lock back option in .5 empire system though :) Frigate warps in locks you boom concord ownzored :P

Reading the topic, I thought I was going to see a passive shield tanked Dominix setup.. Guess not.

Edited by: Siigari Kitawa on 25/01/2006 01:13:37 First, none of this is cheating or an exploit.
Second, yeah, it may seem like you're using someone, but if you use the second one, you're just doing other things and barely paying attention to EVE. That way you can multitask.
Further, yes my boss knows. She allowed me to install it. _________ siigarikitawa.com

only way to AFK rat is to use macros.
and if you do that, you'll be afk from eve courtesy of the devs :p

What about a rack of FoF missiles? Do those require manually launching or are they automatic? Admiral Mikha'il Pelegius CEO Genesis Navy, 21st fleet of the Imperial Navy

They require you to push a button, just like any other gun.
I guess a passive shield tanked apoc with officer smartbombs is the closest thing you get to AFK NPC'ing.

I used to sit in a rat spawn beacon with a dominix full of drones, that could tank constantly.
THAT sir is AFK npc'ing. No other way I know of.

I can see Number 3 working if you get a Domix with loadsa drones and enough powergrid skills to keep a medium sheild recharger going at all times, and just leave it there in a 0.5 belt.
Or failing drones maybe you could keep a Smartbomb going? Og course you might get Concorded if some warps in on you though.

Exactly why I went away from that Idae :P Because I thought of that and the domi and figured I know someone would think it'd be funny to fly right into the smartbomb just to get me concorded :P
Btw I was really never able to get the domi thing to work, I'd throw drones out and wait for the stuff to attack, but it never did. Stuff wouldnt agro on its own, and when I tried in a belt, stuff would SOMETIMES agro but only on 1 drone and the other drones just sat there.
So thats the only way to afk npc but it doesnt really work :P

In the old days, Rats would ALWAYS spawn in exactly the same spot in a belt, and the more you killed in a given belt, the faster they spawned (down to the point that they instaspawened).
A load of RA (prior to RA existing) members were banned for setting up 2 BS teams. 1 Apoc with Large Smartbombs on autorepeat sitting RIGHT where the spawn appears (cruiser/frig spawns), and another sitting just outside smartbomb range with lots of cap relays and remote cap/shield tanking (no remote armor at that point).
Basically both pilots could go afk, and after 30mins the rats were instaspawning, so it made 100s of millions an hour with 0 risk except from other players.
Zloba(Fargus) was one of those banned. All the banns were lifted on appeal when they claimed they didnt know it was an exploit to make huge isk afk with no risk.
This is obviously nolonger possible for a whole myriad of reasons

You have to activate armor hardeners. If you're talking about passive resitances, your cap rechargers won't help. Also if the rats are getting past your shields, slowly but surely your armor will tick away since you have to be at the computer to turn on a repairer. Armor doesn't regen like shields. It's best to passive shield tank if you want the most defence away from your comp.

Sorry I really dont understand WHAT this would achieve?
Surely just sitting in a station while your friend kills rats and gives you the isk would be more effective?

What's the ELUA?
Anyway, if that was the case, every time I had to run to the restroom I'd have to quit the game. Also, if I'm docked and AFK, is that against the rules?
There is a difference between AFK and macroing. The methods above are not macroing, and it is NOT against the rules to not be at your computer while the game is running. When you leave, you put yourself at risk, and that's totally fair.

EULA = The EVE End User License Agreement.
And for the record, just being AFK is not against the EULA.
