Well, It's been nearly a year playing eve. I took a break for a few months though. This whole time however I could never settle on one style of combat. I have been grinding L3 missions for quite a while now and have the support and required skills to just choose and train a BS skill and fly one. Two things stand in my way. First off is I am quite a ways away from affording and affording to lose a BS. Secondly I probably could afford one by now if I didn't keep changing combat styles.
I have trouble with sticking to just one ship and weapon system. I'm equally skilled in flying all racial ships up to BC's, and also equally skilled in all weapons platforms up to medium weapons and drones. Both my shield and armor tanking skills are in the 4's and 5's as well besides the specific resist ones as I use hardners anyway.
I've flown a Drake, Ferox, Naga, Prophecy, Harbinger, Myrmidon, Brutix, and a Hurricane as far as BC's go. I also can fly an Enyo with T2 blasters decently (Done a 4-5 man L4 fleet with it). I've also flown several different cruisers as well.
I've been juggling combat styles far too long and wish I could settle on one, but can't seem to manage that.
I will say that I find I tire of drone boats the quickest as I find I prefer more direct combat. The ship I have flown the longest would have to be my passive shield tanked artillery toting Hurricane. Even that ship gets boring though and even more so lately I've been finding myself not sure what to do thanks to the buffs to long range guns. It used to be I could beat rails and lasers for DPS and DPS application with artillery but not so much any more.
So right now I'm in limbo when it comes to what ship and weapons to use next. I used my arty cane for L3 for a bit. Then tried drone boating, and the latest thing I tried was a Brutix with rails.
Honestly I find I have the most fun in my Enyo as I love the fast and in your face kind of combat but sadly the Enyo doesn't make isk fast enough. I also enjoy my Caracal with HAM's from time to time though it lacks in DPS.
I've heard a lot of people go through this kind of thing and I am hoping some of you who have gone through and gotten out of this cycle could maybe give me some advice.

Honestly, when I was new, I just picked a race whose ships I thought looked the coolest. I tailored my combat style to fit whichever hull looked the most awesome
Honestly though, nobody is making you choose. You can rotate as much as you wish, so long as you understand being a jack of trades (especially early on) will gimp your specialization. But, if that's the cost of having fun, go for it. |

If you're happy to continue progressing at a slow rate then you can split all your time evenly between various weapon systems/races. However at the stage that you are at I would recommend you choose a good reliable L4 mission BS and skill for that until you can fly it very well, as staying at L3s provides extremely little income so you should really go for a BS a.s.a.p.
As for which BS to go for that all depends on you, every race has a good L4 BS, the notable ones are Dominix, Hyperion, Raven, Apocalypse, Maelstrom, Typhoon. |

WOLF said it earlier
Level 4 missions aren't about combat style, they are about making ISK. Pick 1 of the 5 or so well known BS for that, and go make ISK!
CNR (My choice) Machariel Dominix Rattlesnake Navy Scorp Regular Raven for a starter ship maybe? Tempest/Fleet Tempest Maelstrom Apoc
etc. etc.

well, I always liked how missiles worked but after the heavy nerf they lost hitting power. After some playing with EFT i realized I couldn't effectively compare missile DPS with turrets as my missile skills were lacking somewhat compared to my turret skills. I think I got content with where they were back when heavy missiles and the drake were PVE kings. I'm working on them now.
I still can't be certain, but now that I realized why missiles have sucked so much for me I might be able to settle on missiles. I have been leaning toward shield tanks for a long time now and would often find myself wanting to use missiles but finding them lacking in power.
If I can stick with it I'll get a Raven with cruises and a Micro Jump Drive. Finally realizing how crappy my missile skills were compared to my turret skills may be the revelation I needed.
Tonight I just bought a new drake. I have it fit as follows:
6X meta 3 heavy launchers
2X T2 large shield extenders T2 10mn AB 2 mission specific hardners for primary damage incoming 1 hardner for second damage type
3X T2 ballistic controls meta 4 shield power relay (it has the same bonus and penalty as T2 but with less fitting resources required)
2 rigor rigs 1 shield purger rig
As it is right now it can tank 212 EHP/s versus angels which are my most encountered faction as I live in minmatar space
DPS is kind of lacking at 212 excluding drones but that will climb with my skills. |

You can boost your damage with missiles by utilizing a target painter, however you would need to sacrifice a med slot for it, so its up to how comfortable you are with your speed and tank. |

Funny you should mention that. Right after I posted that last post I replaced the hardner that covered the secondary rat damage type with a meta 4 target painter. I was overtanked so I decided I could handle it. Tried it in a mission against some fast merc cruisers and the damage per hit was quite a bit better. |

No they're not. They are about de-stressing after a day at work for me. Nothing's better than blowing the **** out of some NPCs with Cruise Missiles :)
The ISK is irrelevant. If I need more than I have, I just buy Plex. Plus +ša change, plus c'est la m+Žme chose |

well, if you just do missions for the fun of it (aka your a stick in the mud :P ) then you could go up the enyo line (assuming you want to stick with the enyo) the deimos is pretty good little blaster but with drone support and going up farther the brutix/Brutix navy are fairly quick with a lot of dps. Even further you have the Astarte. OFC you could go with a t3 cruiser... you can switch play styles with them. The tengu can go hybrid or missile, no drones though. The legion can do drones/missiles/lasers though :). Hey sky, get back to work! U 2 cips.... |

I like the Enyo with blasters because it is fast and does good DPS. The larger ships are too slow to use blasters for missions decently. Even the Enyo can be tiresome on missions with more dispersed targets.
I have settled on missiles for the moment and hopefully can stick with them. Even though I could do L3 a little faster in my arty cane I find I prefer my heavy missile drake, especially now that I know it has decent DPS potential with some skill training. I'm working towards T2 launchers and missiles, and then getting the skill formerly known as "Electronics" up to 5 from it's current level 4 so I can have the CPU to fit T2 launchers. After that I'll either train some more missile support skills or train for T2 hardners to get T2 tank.
Eventually I may want a Tengu but I am a very long way off from affording one. On that note, does anyone know if they nerfed the Tengu yet? I had heard it has some nerfs coming and forget if they hit yet or not, and if not then when? I hope they don't over do it. |

There have been nerfs to certain modules, such as Heavy Missiles, that have served to indirectly nerf the Tengu. There haven't been, to my knowledge, any significant changes to the hull itself. There will invariably be some changes in the future when CCP's rebalancing initiative reaches the tech 3 ships, but how the Tengu is effected remains to be seen. |

Perhaps you need to try something other than missioning. WH'ing and null are good places to have fun, make is and if you multi skilled it comes in handy. I also battled to decide but have found that all ships will get boring to fly for missioning. I used a tengu for a long time, mostly cause it did missions and wh anoms with relative ease. Even after the missile changes its still a good ship and I doubt it is going to get so badly nerfed to make it worthless. Depending on my mood and location I will choose between a mach, NM, tengu or scorp navy. They all fly differently so it changes it up a bit.\ But as I said, change what and where you do stuff and use the appropriate ship. Many of the non HS options offer better content and better isk.. which in the end translate to fun... the ship you use is mostly irrelevant.. this is an MMO after all. The thick plottens... |
