But given it is Chribba, I'm surprised there isn't a form to enter your character's name and have it locate your picture.

I notice that faces become more visible after zooming in.
I have an OpenCV program that would be able to find our portraits in this image, but using a screeny of the main or non-zoomed image is not working.
If I can get the "master" image of sorts, I might be able to rapidly pick out individual portraits simply by using OpenCV with a regular sized portrait, like one in these forums, and the larger image as inputs. It's not a lot of code, and I already wrote the program. (It's actually a Java port called JavaCV).
Chribba, if you have such a master image somewhere, if I could have it, I might be able to demonstrate a rapid means of finding individual portraits with this program.

I didn't make it in and neither did any of my other chars As I'm really not keen on the design of the Talwar I suppose there's some comfort in it. It really is an excellent piece of work, now if only there was a version with a Vargur or a Vagabond......... |

Challenge to CCP, use every pic for all alts that have a portrait generated in active accounts. Use a Photomosaic program that uses each pic once only (Spare cells can be completely black or white).
The artwork that this should be mapped against should be the announcement poster for the Winter Expansion.
Now there's a good way to drum up interest among the playerbase. |

So I stumble across a link to faces artwork. Looking at it I'm thinking, "Hhmmm nice... a little grainy though... must be oil on canvas? Why is it so grainy?"
Then zooming in I see the faces. "Ahhh! Now I get it! Amazing! So many faces! What a way to touch so many in Eve! How was it done? I wonder if there is anyone I know in there?"
Then it hits me... I think I see my character. "No... can't be possible... can it? Sure looks close! What are the chances someone else has a character that turned out that similar to mine? What are the chances my portrait was actually used? What are the chances I just happened to zoom in on myself? And recognize it!"
So I look a little closer at the artwork and my portrait. "There are differences, shading, angle of the head, shadows are from the other direction... Maybe it's not me. But it is so close. Actually, looks like the artwork portrait was a mirrored image. Wow someone must have taken a lot of time to do this... or seems more likely a machine did. Who is this Chribba?"
I wonder in disbelief for a while and then go to googling more about it. That led me to these forums which I never really used before. A little more research and lo and behold (thank you!) there is a way to find out if your face is in there... and sure enough... it is. Without that names list I would have been wondering for all eternity.
Still awestruck over the piece and even more at the chances of finding my pic in there like that.
Great job! Incredible way to touch countless players.
If I might ask, I'm even more interested than ever about the piece, how it was made, and how long it took, and how I might get a copy (I'm a little attached to it now).

This kind of artwork is most impressive when the original images being used are not altered or having macro sized effects and layers placed on top of it. Not sure what you are talking about? There's no "transparent" image placed on top of it, if so feel free to explain why some of the images are mirrored compared to their originals, surely that would not be needed if there's just a transparent image overlay.
The avatars are indeed allowed to be slightly altered in terms of colors (up to a certain %), as well as being mirrored. Beyond that I'm not sure what macro effects are.
But if you have an easier way to to create stuff like this I'm all ears to learn

For those that think some graphics manipulation of some kind was used to make the picture other than the actual player images check this out.
This is Rozeta Cristofer. First row, 25th image over.
I found the image using Eve Faces
Saved the image and cropped it to size. I assume the images size and quality was reduced in the Talwar to keep the size of the finished image within a reasonable size. Though the Armageddon mosaic weighed in at 46.9MB(file size) 1.5GB(in memory) compared to the 1.4MB(file size) 18.6MB(in memory) for the Talwar.
jpg vs .png makes a big difference I see.

I'm not Maliandra, but I had the same thought though. There is plenty of software available on the Internet which does exactly what you did. I tested a few of them (tried to generate a face out of many face pictures) and then worked with one of it. The programs would offer you a folder where you save a lot of pictures. Then it will ask you if you allow rotation, flipping, change of saturation, change of brightness etc. of the input file. Then you tell which is the "original picture" which it should assemble and you can later tell the amount of overlay, meaning the amount it should merge the original picture into the mosaic. Since the mosaic parts are very small, one can't really tell how much, if at all, overlay you had activated. I read you used 20k input picture. Not sure how many pixels your output picture has, but from there you can tell how many pixels per input picture are shown, if you look at it in full size. At that ratio it is hard to tell if how much overlay went into it, and actually it doesn't really matter. The effect that it was made from portraits is also lost in that resolution. True art comes (from my understanding) when you can achieve the same effect by using considerably less pictures. Let's assume you used 160 x 120 portraits, which is 19,200 portraits in total. Now decrease that to 40 x 30 portraits, which is 1,200 portraits in total. If you look at one of the launcher points of the Talwar, you can see that it it made from roughly 5 x 7 = portraits. You could try to reduce that to 4 portraits, so that the dark part of it is the black hair or a person, and the bright part of it is the face (just as an idea). Anyway, I appreciate your effort and artwork and I hope that you take my lines as "constructive criticism". As I already mentioned, I also work on such projects once in a while (though not EVE related), and if you are interested we can learn from each others experience and ideas.
Regards, Maru Sha. |

@Maru Sha Was probably me misunderstanding the term of overlay there then as I understood it as making a grid of avatars, then simply putting the image on top of it and changing opacity etc which is now how it was done.
It was made with the assistance of software like you described. And ofc the less avatars you could use the cooler, except it would probably look worse (and one of my keys was to get in as many avatars as possible). Input image is 1920x1200, and the output 20000x12500
There's no modification of the original input, merely the amount of tiles are analyzed and avatars closest matching said location on the original image is being used.
In the end it probably was just me misunderstanding the "overlay" part of the previous comment.

ahh the point is they are still faces, and the owner will still recognize their portrait if they go look it up.
The greatest thing about anything is always the idea. It being an algorithm doesn't in anyway discount it as art. |

@ Chribba
Here was my input file I used and this is the output file of it. Made out of 300 individual creative common pictures, mainly faces. I started with 260, looked at the result and decided I need more to cover certain colours / colour combinations /patterns and added 40 more (in particular those with black background). Since this is not enough for a single use per tile, it had to reuse them several times. Most of the time I spent on the Internet to look for faces from different cultures in decent quality. As you can see, the program I used allows patterns which are 'non-quadratic', so I could use pictures of horizontal as well as vertical orientation, which is great for the selection of input files, but also good to depict certain patterns of the input file. As far as I remember for this picture there is no overlay involved. |
