I noticed after several hours of logging in with the RMR client for the first time, that my hard drive began to thrash about horribly and the game lagged, then didn't respond at all. It appears that, after 5 or 6 hours of gameplay, windows begins to swap (use its virtual memory) like crazy. In order to proceed, you need to kill eve and restart it.
This happens to me consistently, and I have verified it with numerous other people on several channels. Everyone seems to have a similar problem. Looks like there's a memory leak.
P.S. Anyone ever going to fix the bug where you slowly and inexplicably lose your shields while in a gang with other people?

I have the same prob. 1 GB of mem in computer, if I watch the process, it will slowly suck through the memory.

a suggested workaround until they get it fixed is to minimize eve occasionaly. This seems to reset the memory for eve for most people.

I concur eve does have a memory leak i have tested it and watched my PF climb 1mb in a few mins of playing, i will be restarting every few hours as flying around low sec space waiting for modules to online isnt funny . i do hope they fix this very fast.

This is happening to me too , and many others in my corp, this is a serious issue i think and I cannot understand why ccp are not prioritising this to be fixed? or if they are why have they not posted something about it. I have to relog at least every 2 hours or so and we pvp a lot so this is very annoying .... does anyone know if anything is being done about this?

last i heard, they could not reproduce it, they needed more bug reports.. that was several days ago.. same thing happens to me when i run missions.
soon as i warp in to spawn, eve's virtual memory usage starts climbing, from a normal 250mb to 500mb+. whereeverything starts chugging.

I tried minimizing eve just to see the results. couldn't believe my eyes when the memory usage went from 260meg to 32meg when I minimized it. Its steadily going back up again. After 5 minutes its at 152meg.
Interestingly enough though, it doesn'tstay at 32meg when minimized. It still climbs.

Better than having to restart eve every few hours though.
Of course, playing in Fullscreen mode may cause problems when you minimize, since i seem to crash about half the time i Alt-tab...

Yes I have this problem as well, I have seen the client suck up to 900mb of mem forcing me to log and reboot.
Any word on a fix?

I'm seeing this after a few marathon sessions while on vacation. I warped into a asteroid belt only to get lagged out due to massive swaps and when it finally appears i'm in a pod only :(

Edited by: Geistkonig on 01/01/2006 00:49:54 I get this error too, running with 512M RAM on a laptop with Intel Integrated 2 Graphics (I know... >.<) and Celeron M 1.4Ghz proc. Eve will freeze up for several minutes and my hard drive whirrs as it pages... after several rounds of freezing and unfreezing eve eventually freezes completely, and I must reboot my machine if ctr+alt+del with the Window$ key doesn't work (which is about half the time). I'm afraid I won't be able to keep playing Eve if this problem keeps up, as it isn't worth paying a subscription to get podded by NPC rats I could have otherwise killed while I'm twiddling my thumbs and my hard drive is paging.
/run-on /rant
Edit: I never had this bug with Cold War Edition, which I sometimes had running for marathon sessions... this bug is new to RMR.

Just started playing a couple days ago too.
For me it ctd's very fast (only 256MB RAM), very commonly when doing anything w/ the channels, switching transport modes such as standard thrusters to warp, jumping, and docking & undocking. Sometimes it'll crash while loading, sometimes after half an hour.
I did notice that the memory leak doesn't start until the logon process grabs the channels.
Pulled a couple of .lbw files. Exceptions abound, and a lot of recurring warning messages while trying to send messages to a UI Window the game can't find. The Module is always Blue.dll.
At one point it got stuck in a loop attempting warp and failing. "Warping to stargate. Warping to stargate. Warping to stargate." Ad Aeternum. Highly amusing; I like messing with Aura, even if it delays my 13 jump trip. >.<
I submitted the .lbw's w/ a dxdiag.txt in a question about so that they'd have what error data I could provide.
Ah yes, and Happy New Year. The clock switched while I was typing.

I think i have the same kind of problem.... the game freezes after say an hour of game play.. after the hd has gone all crazy on me hissing and spitting the game unfreezes.. this happens loads of times and yes the only way i can get rid of it is to log and restart.... not tried alt tabing yet will have to give it ago..... i have asked CCP techies about it but had no reply as of yet... so fingers crossed they fix this soon....

Edited by: Lisa Trawlaw on 01/01/2006 10:31:06 Ok i am not sure this will work for everyone but basicly i downloaded a program called "Tuneup Utilities 2006" from download.com on this program is a little tool called "TuneUp MemOptimizer", its a ram clearer.... so to speak... it frees up ram so you have more for other things.. errrr.... yeah.. anyway, if anyone does download it, i am sure you will figure the program out as i did, but if you want to know what i did then this is what i set it to.. if my ram goes any less than 100 mb avaiable then it free's up to 400mb.... people with higher amounts of ram should be able to figure it out what to set it to,
I have been on since 6 this morning and i have not had any problems at all no restarting the pc or even loggin out of the game.
Oh yeah "Tuneup Utilities 2006" has other programs with it as well scan disk disk dr ect ect ect.... not bad for a freebie....
Hope this helped... if not sorry
(edited) - oh and if this message was abit.. well not very plain and simple to follow then i am sorry but i have kinda been up most of the night trying to fix this..

Just wanted to throw this one out there too http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system/maxmem.htm This is another little freebe very simple and straight forward mem cleaner. On this note I've not had a terriably noticable improvement from using a memcleaner as all they do is request as much ram as they can get when they are triggered. It does help prolong the inevitable however since running this in the background makes the max amount of ram availiable to eve. As far as a bit of a work around for this issue I would suggest first increasing windows virtual memory setting to 4Gb and/or moving the page file to an aux hard disk if you have one. Aside from that benchmark your hard disk drives and see what kinda transfer rates you're getting then take steps to improve it if you get numbers say around less than 10Gb/s. Ofcourse none of this will solve the prob but its benificial overall anyway and it will let eve run for a longer time b4 the slow downs happen as well as decreasing the time it spends in that state when that first suprise one hits you. Hope some of this bable helps.

Most games hover at 300-450mb, so did Eve. Now it quickly climbs to 650 and starts lagging, progressivly getting worse till 790 where it starts to really lag badly at gates. 850 the game is unplayable and i generally lose connection at this point. This has been happening in less than an hour in most cases.
Worth pointing out that when the game does lag, the CPU drops to about 10% if not less, even though you can hear the computer going crazy.

I run 200GB SATA maxtor HDD i have tested the speed and it comes out at:- 101 million bytes per second @ burst , 54.2 Sustained speed, page file is set to 1535Mb (runs fine with half life 2, bf2 etc ). iRun eve and page file starts out on 399mb (normal for me) after 4 hours play i was wondering why i was lagging in a system with only 10 players in. /me switches screens OMG 1.11GB page file being used /me restarts eve , back down to 400mb. now this is not right and i dont care what system you run if your on eve for a long time your get the lag monster from hell

well same here it climbs up that fast ..... since rmr i got so much lagers i nearby lost 4 ships to that and i got a pentium 4 ee 3,2 ghz with 1 gb ram and an ati 9600xt bevore rmr no probs but since it lags badly just a question of time till i loose a ship and then ccp says : bad luck

Any news from the devs yet ? We need a client fix imo - since the last news item mentioning a client patch in Jan I have heard nothing. Not even much acknowledgement of the problem.
I had a break for a few days - come back and its right back to sub 2fps with 3 accounts running, 4-5fps with 2 accounts. Same issues as decribed by everyone above.
C'mon CCP - fess up to the punters (esp those struggling with multiple accounts) - you surely dont want ppl cancelling accounts back to a level where the game runs ?

edit: Just heard from a programmer friend that this is normal behavior from programs that are minimized. You can reproduce this by opening internet explorer and then minimizing that to see the same thing happen.
Yup. Windows is a slightly unusual OS in that it likes to keep a process' 'working set' as small as possible. In the context of Windows the 'working set' is those pages of RAM allocated to a process. Note that since Windows is a paging OS not all of the data and instructions for a process need be in RAM at the same time.
Windows tries to reduce the working set of a process when it's idle. It keeps doing it until the process starts to squeak, basically. When you minimise an application Windows takes that as a hint to have a real house keeping exercise and aggressively trim the working set for that process.
Oh and technically none of us knows that this is a memory leak. A memory leak is when a process loses track of allocated memory - like dropping loose change down the back of the sofa. A process that is continuously allocating memory may not be leaking memory per se. OTOH it does generally suggest poor design at the least. -- (Battle hardened miner)

Edited by: Phrixus Zephyr on 02/01/2006 18:29:20 I downloaded Analogx and an interesting thing happened. My pagefile got to 850 and then Analogx started to have a tug-o-war with Eve. Everytime it reached the 850 mark, Analogx would try and clean some out, this would lag me for a while, knock it down to 750 then Eve would crank it right back up to 850 and it starts all over again. Meaning constat lag for me with bulitin updates each time it goes to 750.
This happened for about 2-3 minutes non-stop, until my drones killed a couple of Chief Guards.
So be carefull... and btw Tuneup is a trail version, you get 30 days, and I've already used all 30 so i cant use it anymore.
