This is what ive been told:
- To get outnumbered and pwned by a enemy gang
- When you loose a industrial or bigger ship to snipers at a gate
- When you get killed by a group the other side of camped gate
- When you get found and killed by an enemy gang when flying solo
Whats closer to the meaning or is it just a genreal term?

they're all correct. it basicly means gettin really killed. Ie completely destroyed and teh other person won with out a boubt and easily

Merriam-Webster Online returns this result:

I doubt there is any "official" definition, but in all cases I've seen it used, getting "ganked" is being attacked unexpectedly when you are at a disadvantage. In any sentence, if you could substitute the real words "bushwhacked", or "ambushed", you're probably using it correctly.

A fair better generalized definition would be:
- To be killed in a fashion where it has been specifically engineered so that one does not have any chance of survival, escape, or salvation.

Gank: "combat in which you couldn't possibly win or escape".
Numbers on both sides don't have much to do. Ceptors still "gank" lone hauling indies.

The way I use it out in the real world is if somebody steals something... they gank it... anything from your wallet and car... to just you seat in front of the TV... that's just my usage in RL...

Gank is the act of, as in "Ganking", or as in I just got 0VVN3D by a gank squad"
Ganked is the past tense, as in OMFG I JUST GOT GANKED!!!1111ONE.

As far as i know, its actually comes from the original temr of using full-out offense as defense, "gun-tank", shortened to "gank".

I have been in eve long enough to see how the word "ganked" came into being. It is a slang comming out of the two words "gate camper".
I rember when the carebears used to swear at the gate campers and the slang Ganker was born...

I would add "..and no prior expectation of attack."
To me gankage implies that the victim is taken completely by surprise and overwhelmed beyond any hope of survival.

Actually most of you are wrong
to be "Ganked" is when a large group takes out an individual or a group smaller than itself.
if you are beaten in 1 on 1, or sniped or whatever in single combat where you get your butt waxed then you are "PWNED" (Owned)

Gank is an Afro-American slang term that originated in the Detroit area in the 80s, IIRC. The original term is synonymous with disrespect. The sort of disrespect that ends up being rectified with 9mm handguns.
I've heard, but never established to my satisfaction, that it is etymologically derived from the term "Gang Related Killing", or "Gangk" for short.
Hope that clears it up.

The term gank has been around in the US for a long long time. Been using that word for a long time myself, way before Eve. Specially used when I was in the Army. Always talking bout ganking people, and not getting ganked by others.
A true gank in military sense was to Kill everything and everybody with not a loss nor injury, and to aquire all the resources/spoils in the area as well.

ganked = to be killed with no or little resistance as a result of bad tactics/ship choice or being overly outnumbered.

Gank is a term from Player vs. Player MMORPGs, such as World of Warcraft. In the most basic sense it means "to kill", but is most commonly used when getting attacked when unprepared (e.g. when low on health, already engaged in battle, etc.), or being attacked by another player who you have no real chance against.

I was wondering what if You are attacked first say in a Elite Hauler with webber and warp scrambler and have the skill trained up to 5. While your other account alt sits next to ya with a cloak and autotarget mod battleship. Of course noone can resist a fat afk hauler at the gate.. would that be considered ganking or pirateing since they would have not been killed if they would have not shot the hauler who just sitting there?
