Hmm what shard was that on TomB ? I think I recall that character, but it's been a while.
And yeah, u r griever pk !
Seriously, it's good to see confirmed that CCP may at times add features that slant to one side of the player spectrum in any single patch, but are as determined as always to keep true to the original vision.
I think we all know it anyway, but sometimes the whining does get me down too.

Good to see the devs take heart in their pvp-side of the game. And good to see some carebear devs too Keep up the good work!
oh and off the record: I think TomB sounds a lot better then 'Tom Bombadil'. It sounds a lot more 'graveyard-like'

I wasn't with them, I was in GC (The Cabal) and we clubbed the hell out of UDL on Siege Perilous....but I hear they were top dogs for awhile on Chessy. Good friends with a few of the UDL to this day.

I agree, this game is fantastic as is. Its uniqueness is what keeps me and others coming back for more. I have played other mmorpg's and none have held my attention as long as EVE has. Other mmorpg's are disposable, EVE is not. Again, DEV's, great game and dont let the whiners who want the "win button" grind you down.

I hope that I am proven wrong...
The simple fact is, eventually the almighty dollar will prevail and the risk we all enjoy now will eventually be nerfed to apease the carebear. It has been happening in tiny increments since I started playing in May 2005. The trend will continue.
You are in blind faith if you do not see this trend.

IÆd like to bring a little more complexity to this discussion by breaking up some of the concepts that have been mentioned. In particular:
High risk vs. low risk PVP
This is quite simply the cost of player death in terms of resources (i.e. player time). The positives of high player death are that it adds excitement to risky actions and gives meaning to PVP conflicts. High risk PVP is something that CCP has committed to as part of their fundamental concept of EVE. They may make small adjustments here and there but itÆs here to stay.
Its important to note that it has a downside as well. First and foremost is it quite simply turns a lot of people off. This is something CCP has known from the first however and has decided to live with. The other major problem is that it leads to cautious often boring play. If the ôbestö strategy is to avoid combat then people will tend to do that to be successful even if they donÆt enjoy it. CCP works to mitigate this by trying to make the rewards make the risk worthwhile, with mixed results.
Involuntary vs. voluntary PVP
This is an area where I think there is more contention both in the EVE community and in CCP. One way to look at it is one player is essentially the target of another player providing the attacker with a rewarding game experience at his own expense. Generally the attacker, being configured for PVP and generally better at it, has a huge edge so even the risk discussed above is tipped towards the player who didnÆt want to PVP in the first place. This is something that can kill a game if allowed to be uncontrolled. One person can systematically drive away new players day after day by doing what he enjoys: ganking other players.
In EVE this is a very active issue and explains the existence of nooby corps, and high sec space. Tellingly CCP made changes to MWDs when it became possible to use them to reliably avoid undesirable combat. EVE also has many non-PVP oriented targetrs (complexes, belts) located in PVP space. Its clear that CCP has decided to address this issue with a balance thatÆs tilted towards PVPers, but its also clear that its an area that they are still working on. Griefing vs competitive PVP
This brings us to the last area which is the tendency of some MMO players to get their enjoyment from a game in ruining the game for others. This is not PVPing in corporate fleets or even all pirating but is specific sorts of acts that screw up the game for others. Gate ganking of newbies is the most common form but there are others. Griefing is even more destructive to a game then general involuntary PVPing, as griefers tend to set up situations where their victims have no chance and lose as much as possible.
No company can ignore griefing or get rid of it completely and CCP is no exception dealing with it in a variety of ways. Changes here are only to be expected as new forms of griefing arise and are dealt with by CCP. The trick for CCP is to deal with this without compromising their strong commitment to meaningful PVP play.
Conclusion
All these can be seen as independent but related axis. If the death penalty is high then of course the reaction to involuntary PVP is exacerbated. If opportunities for involuntary PVP are frequent (i.e. no high sec space) then griefing is made easier. In particular the high death penalties of EVE tend to make people reluctant to engage in PVP, so EVE sets up situations of involuntary PVPing to partially counteract this. They do this by placing things non-pvpers want in areas that are open to PVP.
Most PVPers see changes made to keep non-PVP players in the game as ôcaving to care bearsö etc. but in many cases these changes are really to entice more players to put themselves in harms way thus enhancing the PVP experience (often at the non-PVP playerÆs expense).

Edited by: Deacan Wildfire on 21/01/2006 00:17:31 Nice points. I'd offer some more of my own but I've done the subject to death recently, so instead I'll be lazy and just point you in the direction of this thread that I posted a while ago on mmorpg.com (of all places, heh). My first post doesnt really say a great deal with regards to the exact mechanics of games like Eve, although I go into a bit more detail towards the end of page3, and more still on 4 and 5. - DW plaguing MMORPGs since 1997 |

but does it ? no, and it does affect those who do pvp, and the bulk of the systems in eve are low sec.
what is happening, and has happened in every online game that has PVP featured in it till now is that no matter how you try to get a person to PVP, they wont, if its not in their basic nature to.
So the carebear type continue to flood into the game, and gradually take over , they wont change their basic pacifistic nature, and through the constand threads proclaiming this is bad nerf that, the game changes for the worse.
happening right now in eve as we speak, people arnt leaving high sec, the systems will even get more crowded in the future, why do you think the change to pos stations being allowed in highsec were allowed?
to cater to the demands of a carebear society that would not move to low sec space to gain the ability to use player stations and structures.
Eve is a game of risk VS reward at its core, problem is, is that this certain breed of gamer does not want risk vs reward, and have moved from game to game , searching for the "next big thing" not finding it, nerfing it till they no longer want to play it, and moving on to the next game, and Eve is the next target.
doubt me if you want, but as a person who has played every pvp online game out there to date, i have seen it happen.
In the end though , I hope that CCP realizes there is a market for risk vs reward play, and that theres thousands of us across the globe that will play this game with the risk.
continuing to cater to the nonviolent, non confrontationalists out there will not only demean the game dynamic, but in the end will spell its doom, and be regulated to " just another space game"
i sure dont want that .
you?

And here's where I begin to feel perhaps even a little insulted. You've just been told to your faces by the devs that the game won't be carebeared and you say it will be anyway. People, EVE Online is the game these developers have wanted to play since they were children, in some cases very young children. They aren't about to sell short their dream's bottom line. They aren't Sony Online Entertainment; they are not beholden to the bottom line of a larger corporation. They have no need to cater to the "carebear masses", because the carebear masses play other games. All of the recent population surges have occured when EVE's gotten press about how hardcore and badass the world is. Think about that. Sure there are some hardcore Empire carebears - thank God there are, the economy would suck without 'em, bless their fluffy little hearts. But a lot of folks have been led into EVE with dreams of being the baddest mushugga out there.
Just a little something to think about. -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?
