Amos here, was created about a year and 8 months ago. At the time my english wasnt that great, but I understood enough to design a character.
Unlike now, I didnt know what exactly attributes DO in the game. So what did I do?
+3 Charisma, +1 Memory, +1 Intiligence - thinking that would help me in EVE.
So currently Perception is my lowest attribute - I have 19-20 in all other categories but Perception is at 16 (CHarisma would be like 23 if I bothered training advanced Charisma learning skill).
I recently checked the character creation process, and still there is no exact explanation of what attributes do.
Now I know its no use complaining about my atributes (CCP has some silly policy they cant modify characters after they were created), but why nothing has been done to explain this to new people?
I will forever be forced to learn the useful skills slower then a lot of characters - CCP - do something to make sure new people dont do the same. LOL U IS PWNED |

Well...I got lucky sorta. I'm a new player but read that Charisma was the worst attribute. Problem was I put +3 memory and +2 willpower. Perception was only @ 4.
I rerolled after that toon was 1 month old and have fairly balanced stats on this one. Now I won't have to regret the way I made my character 6 months from now.
I feel your pain. How could this be explained to new players though? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ <---Is a newbie. Probably working on |

That's how all of us Intaki bastards were born. Bigger ego, compensated with inferior eyesight and lack of motivation. Charisma and appearance, although the latter hardly any good in my case, are fine traits for a diplomat, if you will, but for actual combat? Pfft!
Perhaps the future will show us more demand for coffee drinking and chitchat skills in the universe. Until that time, it's the age old ranting you hear at every gallentean pub near closing time...

Be proud of your charisma. No other race ineve is as good at using sleazy pick up lines and actually having them work.

Well I got very high memory, willpower and too low perception (u can even say I'm kinda blind), it never stopped me from killing anything, but this char will never be able to train for the bigger stuff (even a +5 implant wouldnt help me).
I doubt CCP will ever be so kind to "fix" the older chars, at least I demand that willpower and memory is more useful for future combat skills.. even charisma is now useful for something (gang assist modules)!!
Common CCP dont be a meanie, pimp up my char

Yup, I'm a couple week old player and I had no idea what I was doing when creating my char. I have relatively low perc, but my int, will and mem are ok and my char is low so I think I'm ok.
I don't plan on rerolling but I did for fun just to see what I could get when actually knowing what things did and yeah, I could have done alot better.

Have a really good think about making a new char. Unless you are a hardcore station hugging type, sooner or later you are going to want to train gunnery or missiles or ship flying, and you want perception for those.
Think serioulsly about making a new char with Perception and Intelligence highest; willpower and memory as medium, and low charisma. Unless CCP change the way things work, you'll be best off with those attributes. Keep and use your current character while training the new one. Once the new one is at the same stage as your current character, then swap all the ISK and assets over, and you're all set.

I've been playing for over two years. Once you get advanced learning skills up, you don't feel it so bad.

that's what trial id for ... I spent half of my trial creating and deleting characters to roll for good skills and attributes ... I ended with 9-10 on all except charisma ------------------------------ Removed due to offensive content - Laqum

I am 2 weeks new, and i too found that there was no explanation for the attributes anywhere. I've picked the most in perception (i knew the "perc" was usually good for combat from other games), but left Memory and Willpower at lowest (damn, those skills take long to train, and low memory doesn't help at all).
Nonetheless, i think it's great that attributes are not explained. It causes more variety, more chance, more challenge. If the attributes would be explained well, then people would pick the "correct" attributes... and everyone will be "perfect". Well, EVE is modelled after RL, and in RL noone is perfect.
You don't pick your traits in RL, you are born with them, and nothing you can do to change it, besides learning. But no matter how much you learn, if you were not "born with it" you will never be as good as someone that "natural" at it. And it is same in-game. Makes it that much more challenging, that much more varied, and that much more real.
And what's the best thing you can do in RL to rectify this? Well, you get children, and try to give them what you didn't have, try to teach them things you wish you had when you were their age. In-game, this is equivalent to creating Alts and setting them up using the lessons learned from your main.
The ironic part is that in RL, what parents usually try to give you (to compensate for what they lacked) is usually something that is not relevant anymore in the current world (that's changed from your parent's past). And from what i hear so far about EVE always changing skills/attributes/formulas/balance, this applies to EVE too
Finally, it is possible in EVE, through trial and error get the strongest char for the job. And once again, it translates in RL to natural selection and evolution over multiple generations.
It just wouldn't be as fun, as challengin, as lively, and as real in EVE if everyone had the perfect attributes for their jobs

I picked one of those pre-set careers, I think it was labelled "Pilot" or "Fighter" or something like that; started with 6/12/6/11/4 (int/perc/cha/will/mem). Training up the learning skills was painful, but after that, the rest of the int/mem heavy skills like navigation or electronics were okay ... there's still a few I couldn't be bothered to train to 5 because it takes so long for such little gain, but I could've been worse off I guess.
One of my alts has almost perfectly balanced attributes, with charisma being slightly lower, and I have to say, I couldn't have picked it better! ____________________

I played with a character on a trial account for a while, before I understood how the attributes worked. Once I had read the forums a little and understood more of the game mechanics, I created a new character with attribute balance in mind; thus, I am not currently suffering from the problem.
However, I would actually like to see the charisma attribute used a bit more. A few new social skills introduced that actually have benefits other than to agent runners, for example.
For example, smugglers could benefit from the "Bribery" skill which affects the cost and chance of success of bribing a customs official when caught with an illegal load. Pirates might benefit from the "Police Relations" skill which enables them to buy temporary access to a high-sec system they would otherwise be banned from for trade purposes. Future capital ships might see the pilot needing to hire an NPC crew to help man it's many systems, the cost and skill of which is affected by the "Recruitment" skill.

Edited by: Serj Darek on 25/11/2005 09:47:19 When i started playing (almost 2 years ago) I had no idea what attribs was good for what. Im a Minmatar -> Brutor -> Slave child. That gave me lots of Perc and will. Then i spent +3 points on charisma instead of putting them on INT and MEM. Since like 75% of the skills are Int/mem based i lag behind on everything but Gunnery/Missiles/Spaceship command. Although now that all the funky Gang skills has come into the game im actually considering training advanced charisma skill.
But still, it should perhaps be made clear what % of the skills are affected by different attribs. Makes the attribute slection a bit easier?
