I posted this elsewhere and some people suggested I move it here. Just a simple way to attempt to reduce the blatant increase in Spammers on EvE (many via Steam it seems), while still making it a playable solution that both genuine EvE players and the Spammers themselves can incorporate. ________________________________________________ I went to Jita to pick something up and moments before I went through my usual routine of minimising Local I witnessed the sad case of a 13 year old kid being spammed, and being upset and in tears about it. That was downright dreadful.
I wondered if the Dev's would ever deal with it because I often see the Spammers themselves bragging in other Local chats that they do it because Eve allows it. Jita now has reached a stage where you need to do ten minutes of blocking before you start seeing the proper game players chatting.
I would like to see just a couple of changes:
* Remove Local from Jita altogether.
* Introduce a new system where players can open a new 'report spammer' box where they can tick that option, then cut and paste a brief example of what is being said and send it to the Devs. 50 Spam reports gives them a yellow 'Wanted' label (also highlighting they are a known spammer), a hundred Spam report auto-kicks them out of the station for the hunters to have a play with, and if they start to spam from somewhere in space and get 150+ Spam reports then its total open season for any bounty hunter to claim the entire bounty on their heads, not the current fraction. That way the Spammers will be forced into the game, but at the same time cannot complain about being kicked out or banned. Eve is all about what you make of it after all.
It would be nice if the Devs remembered that not everyone on Eve is streetwise, or over 18 for that matter. Ironically the 13 year old was an Icelander, falling for the scams due to his bad English.
For the record I'm an old fart myself, but still a parent with a teenager who has begun to take an interest in games such as Eve. They are the next generation of Eve players, but I'm not going to encourage mine to join when he's older if the Dev's continue to put their fingers in their ears and say 'La la la I can't hear you' about the whole Spamming issue. |

Eve is harsh, cold and cruel world. If 13yr old cannot learn to ignore spammers and pay enough attention to avoid scams - he should choose another game. No one will spoon-feed him here. HTFU |

or was the 13 year old the scammer and trying to get over on you by playing on your sympathy?
the regular scams are easily spotted, so people have evolved and one has to be REALLY smart not to fall for them.
you might not be as street smart as you think (then again you might be), but dont trust anyone in jita.
if you block the scammers and find someone that really seems honest, make them repackage whatever it is they are selling.

No one including CCP, ever claimed Eve was Hello Kitty Online. It's actually promoted for the fact you can scam, lie, spy and shoot everyone. He'll either take it as a good lesson learned, or leave. But this is more about his attitude and approach to life, than it is about scamming in Eve.

Taken from a "Fix Jita" thread I posted in but here's an idea:
Now Spammers really do get on my breasts (If I had them) but I think if you focused on combating spammers you'd see the population go down. It's not the pilots in system that's the problem its the activities they are doing in Jita that is. Stop the spammers = lowers the population but this would have to be hooked into chat related like a:
where [Char] has posted in Local [X Times] and content is unchanged in [X minutes] move to adjacent system. X times could be 5 times in 5 minutes for instance.
If you're having a conversation you will almost never going post the exact same thing 5 times in as many minutes. However this might just get rid of the spam bots and spammers in general. Just furthering the idea.
Other "Fix Jita" threads:
Raise Jita cap by any means necessary!
Possible solution to Jita's overcrowding by reducing its strategic position.
And two that don't:
Ultimate Jita crowding solution. Make Jita lowsec or 0.0 when it is too full.
Free Jita concorde comes with solution
These are just my opinions, nothing more. My Feature\Idea:-á Fast Character Switching "XP Stylee"

this basically.
Scamming not really an issue. Its not like most, if any, scammers have done something orignal to sucker in even jaded players.
I still see the good ole selling 1 charon, oops, 1 carbon scam for example.
Or the nice player pointing out look at this contract this person put up, I don't have the money someone take this deal....
Or the I am leaving eve, give me isk and see it doubled. Why this works no clue. I have seen burn outs leave eve. Most you'll get is a good bye in corp comms, a mail and maybe a forum post and they are gone. Some even give away thier stuff and you get the alwasy fun this player has biomassed themselves mail in corp (its actually a cool mail, tripped my mind first time I saw one). Or they gather up their stuff in empire (or low sec staion if they have caps) just in case they come back and leave once all packed up. Either way....1 day they are in game, next day they are not. They are not in jita for 4 days saying I am leaving eve. Eve is like that...when players leave, they jsut leave.
real traders with good deals drop the contract and leave. I have left several good deals in jita that had my wallet blinky blinky not even 3 jumps in back to home system. I didn't need to advertise my deals....smart players spammed contract search and found them. My contracts sold themselves. |

I don't like the scammers either (not because they're 'evil', simply because they spam what would otherwise be a heavily occupied chat channel) but I don't think there's a real solution to this. Solution
WiS with combat -> go and destroy the clones of the scammers and then go and slit their throats and see them gone from local.

A simple but playable way to deal with scammers is to read contracts carefully, and not assume that some guy who offers you a remarkably good deal for no apparent reason is doing it because he likes you.
This also applies to EVE.

Pretty much.
That said, jita local should have a rate limiter on it, to reduce spamming.

The same **** over and over again... I never see a new creative scam any more.....
Scammers remind of of the RMT bots you see every now and them spamming.

At first i need to apologized for my bad English ;)
In my eyes the case looks so:
Its not a problem that there are scammers: It's Eve!
And its no Problem that these scammers scamming kids ;) Its still Eve!
There problem in my oppinion is, that they do it with bots and lets call it "one use chars". It should be handelt like suicide ganking... With Bans to the ones, who use the char, delete them and create another on.
A example solution for this problem could be a new skill.
Lets call it Trade Hub Communications.
With this skill you couldt write in Jita or Armarr Local chat. and with Trade Hub Communications they can spam like always.
The most player wont need the Skill on high level so it isnt a real disadvantage for them. And the local wouldn't be spammed so much and the spam scammer are force to use to stay with one char, so that theyre reputation fall back to them.

Of course, I think I saw that one in Jita the other day, someone was spamming a contract, and encouraging doubters to right click and select show info.
Now, I'm familiar with the old scam of taking a standard ship, and naming it a navy issue ship- in that case when you right click, you can see that it is a scam.
This "right click" showing the wrong info seems to be the worst scam - you don't actually know what you are getting, and you've been diligent. Its distinct from getting what you knew you were getting, but finding out its worth less than you paid (far less) |
